Alec Baldwin Thinking Of New York City Mayor Run: Report

UPDATE: Amping up speculation, Baldwin's rep, Matthew Hiltzik, told The Hollywood Reporter, "I wouldn't rule it out," when asked about the potential run for mayor.
_____
PREVIOUSLY: Politically outspoken and long open about his interest in running for office, the local fallout of the Anthony Weiner scandal may have opened the door for Alec Baldwin to make his electoral move.

A friend of Baldwin's told Richard Johnson of The Daily that the Emmy-winning actor is mulling over a 2013 run for the Mayorship of New York City, following the exit of termed out incumbent Michael Bloomberg. Weiner has long had his eyes on Gracie Mansion, but his sexting scandal makes it much less likely that he'll run, at least successfully.

"Alec said, 'Hey, maybe this changes the race. The dynamics have shifted,'" the friend told Johnson. "The Democrats need a high-profile candidate, and Alec can fill that bill."

Baldwin is an ardent Democrat, and supported Barack Obama in his 2008 run for president.

The timing couldn't be more perfect; Baldwin has insisted that he'll be leaving show business in 2012 when his "30 Rock" contract expires, and told Elliot Spitzer -- another disgraced former New York Democrat -- in December that he is very strong considering a political run.

"I don't want to say this in an anti-elitist way, but we've had men who are Ivy League groomed running this country since 1988," Baldwin said during his interview on what was then called "Parker Spitzer." "We've had 22 years of Yale and Harvard running this country right now, and the problems aren't getting solved."

Over the weekend, Baldwin took to Twitter to give some national policy suggestions, including clean energy research, investment in infrastructure and higher tolls and single commuter fees.

This past fall, Baldwin mused about running for Congress, potentially for the seat from Long Island held by Tim Bishop.

"Do I run for Congress on Long Island? What's Tim Bishop going to do? He represents my district," he said. "People get sick, die. They're offered lucrative deals and want to cash in and make money for their retirement... Unfortunately, an opportunity for me may mean bad things for someone else. I don't wish that."

Bishop recently won re-election in the final race called in the country.

Baldwin has a series of films to complete before any run, including the star-studded Broadway adaptation of "Rock of Ages."

This man may be a wonderful actor but he has no credentials to justify his being mayor of our city. Moreover, aspiring to start at the top job is an act of arrogance. If he wants to go into politics then let him learn how to do it by running for office at a lower level, learning how our government system operates, and working his way up. We have only seen him as an actor but we don't know how competent he would be as mayor and we have no evidence by which to judge his capabilities--if they exist at all. Temperamentally, he appears to be horribly unsuited for the job and I suspect that the nuts and bolts of running the city would be extremely boring to him. To turn the running of an enormous city like New York over to a rank, narcissistic amateur is simply frightening.

This would be hilarious...I am sure he would get elected...he is a democrat and a celebrity...I have a feeling he is in for a rude awakening when he sees what the inner workings of politics are really like...not like the movies Alec...but I am sure he will fit right in and adjust quickly...would be interesting to see what he does...I feel new York now is like a fine oiled machine thanks to guiliani...

i agree no thnaks to bloomber , but thatnks to giuliani

No, it's not hilarious. If you lived in New York City, you would realize that we need a serious, dedicated mayor, not some actor without any demonstrable qualifications. You say that we would vote for him because he is "a democrat and a celebrity" --your reasoning is a real insult to New Yorkers as you seem to think that we would vote for someone on the basis of his being "a democrat and a celebrity." How about ability to govern, to navigate the political complexities of a huge city, knowledge of administrative departments, ability to work with the City Council and the governor and the NYS legislature and the U.S. Congress and the myriad of interest groups, etc.? How about substantive knowledge? How about a platform with concrete proposals? You may think that this is "hilarious", but if you and your family lived in New York City, you might think of his candidacy more in terms of a sick joke!

What if he pretends to be a Republican?
03:16 AM on 06/10/2011
I would definately vote for him. He's an actor and just maybe he would restore the art, music and creativity that has been sucked out of this city by fooliani and the now mayor who only cares about $$. The city is filled with corporate slaves. My job has turned that way too, when it's happening. I want my life back. Run Alec!!!
03:06 AM on 06/10/2011
Pleeeease! Surely New Yorkers are too smart to elect this "wanna be."
03:17 AM on 06/10/2011
Yeah, he wannbe mayor and I wannabe voting for him.
01:51 AM on 06/10/2011
What a joke!
12:53 AM on 06/10/2011
He can't even show his ex wife and daughter respect! Do you really think he would respect the citizens of NYC??? C'mon, I know NY'ers are smarter than that!!!
12:50 AM on 06/10/2011
OMG........all NYC needs is a hothead running the city. If he's elected, there is no justice in this world!!!
03:19 AM on 06/10/2011
A hothead? Have you ever been to NY? We lived thru 8 years of that insane gooliani.

Most New Yorkers are idiots, they voted for Hillary, Weiner and Bloomberg. Who cares who they vote for, they deserve everything they get with high taxes, most people that can are leaving the state, they have driven business out. Vote him in...no surprise...he's your man. Fits the bill.

Hey man, I thought we were all one after 9/11. I thought we were all "coming together". I feel so sad that you don't love us anymore.....

PERFECT! A match made in heaven - an overbearing, smug, pus gut who has no clue when to shut the F up as mayor? So what's new?

Mark,
You are kidding I hope, remember he was leaving the country if George Bush got elected. Please how can you possibly vote for someone with that moronic statement. He acts like a tough guy, he is far from it.
11:08 PM on 06/09/2011
I thought he was a man of his word and left the USA after President Bush got reelected. I did not know he was still residing here.
10:42 PM on 06/09/2011
What a great idea!
Alec Baldwin is a witty, intelligent man who is also a successful
actor at his craft, and he'd make a great Mayor of New York.
The Republicans should get him to run for their party because
he's better than what they have on the slate.
I made a comment about him running for office and they may
have thrown away that away, too, so at least someone
else saw the same thing. Eh?
11:37 PM on 06/09/2011
Your joking right? The man is an idiot who has never worked a day in his life.
11:59 PM on 06/09/2011
Neither has the Senate or Congress worked a day in their life
The party of No, which stands for Nada. vs the party of
"No, I can't."
That's all we have ongoing.
Alec is a successful actor and business man and will be far
better than what we have,
Besides he's better looking than Barney Frank, Bloomberg or
Dennis Kuchinich.
