Bob Herbert

Former New York Times columnist Bob Herbert has joined the think tank Demos, the organization announced Tuesday night.

Herbert left the Times in March after 18 years as an Op-Ed columnist for the paper.

Demos announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday night that Herbert is becoming a Distinguished Senior Fellow, and will focus on economic security issues. On Wednesday, Herbert published his first blog post for Demos, entitled "The Jobs Emergency and America in Crisis." He will also contribute to The American Prospect.

Aftersootdamp, this from the Demos website: http://www.demos.org/about.cfm

Demos is a NON-PARTISAN (caps mine) public policy research and advocacy organization founded in 2000. Headquartered in New York City, Demos works with advocates and policymakers around the country in pursuit of four overarching goals:
•a more equitable economy with widely shared prosperity and opportunity;
•a vibrant and inclusive democracy with high levels of voting and civic engagement;
•an empowered public sector that works for the common good;
•and responsible U.S. engagement in an interdependent world.

Best wishes to Bob, a classy guy who can bring a lot to the organization's mission.

Good to have Herbert back. Ever since the death of Molly Ivins a few years ago, then Herbert and Frank Rich leaving the NY Times, seems we have been losing some of our best columnists.
Gail Collins is still pretty good, and Joe Nocera is shaping up nicely, but it'll be great to read Herbert's stuff again.

Amen to that. Milly Ivins was the classiest act ever. I miss her and think of her often. Can you imagine the delicious things she would have to say about the 2012 GOP presidential field? Not to mention her usual targets like Mr. Goodhair Perry -- she would be, ahem, whomperjawed.

I wonder whether Bob Herbert WANTED to be in the mass media, or he wanted to work in more serious policymaking, which this new gig suggests as a possibility. In any event, it's good to see him back.

I had hoped that he would have been hired by MSNBC to give us the perspective of the African American community which forms a large part of the democratic party and whom are not represented at all during primetime on this network. I wish him well.

good to hear he's still giving his voice to a productive project. I like what he had to say even though as with most journalist, I have a firm 65% rule. (I only agree with 65% of what they say no matter who the journalist is.)

I wonder if the departure of the great Times columnists is related to the rise of Jill "interrogation techniques" Abramson.
