Gulf Oil Spill Reported Near Venice, Louisiana; Coast Guard Investigating

First Posted: 06/08/11 06:27 PM ET Updated: 08/08/11 06:12 AM ET

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard is investigating a fisherman's report of an apparent oil spill "several miles" long near Venice, Louisiana, a Coast Guard spokesman said Wednesday.

A team was trying to determine whether the substance was actually oil, how much was spilled and where it came from, a Coast Guard spokesman said. He declined to predict what the findings would be.

"It's too early," the spokesman said.

A fisherman reported an "oily substance" in the water two miles southeast of Baptiste Collette Pass, early Wednesday morning, and four pollution investigators were sent to obtain samples for analysis, a news release said.

"The Coast Guard has opened and is using the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to begin mobilizing assets to quickly address the situation," the news release said.

Don't hold you breath for updates on anything. Were just the common little people out here . We don't desearve to be told much of anything. Just what they have to.
We were lied to from day one about the oil spill . Even if we are told anything can we really believe it.?
No updates on Fukushima either. Have to search for infomation. Fairwinds associates is about all we have to give us some information on the radiation.

in 1978 Brazil started using alcohol from sugar cane to use in automobiles, today 88% of cars in Brazil are FLEX fuel driven, they produce 18 billion liters and export 2 billion to the US market...

You do need to tell the 'whole' story.

"However, some authors consider that the successful Brazilian ethanol model is sustainable only in Brazil due to its advanced agri-industrial technology and its enormous amount of arable land available;[7] while according to other authors it is a solution only for some countries in the tropical zone of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa."

You might also want to put the "billions of liters" into perspective.

There are a total of about 10 million cars and light trucks running on ethanol and blends in Brazil.

The US has 300 million automobiles to begin with!

if you google alcohol cars in Brazil you'll see that Brazil produces 18 billion liters of alcohol and exports 2 billions to the US... I took it from there!
That country, being a 3rd world country has invested in new fuel technology more then 30 years ago and the US has not.... at least the people in these country's have a choice of fuel when we don't..... and we are number 1 aren't we ?

HP: Where are the updates on this story? Is it an oil spill, or not? The Coast Guard should know by now, for Pete's sake!
09:36 AM on 06/11/2011
And since they do not, it would correct to assume that the the "spill" is not a spill, or that is really is quite minor.

Nobody wants to be caught with their 'pants down'.

It dosen't matter what we want . They will continue to do what they want. Our only hope for a change will come from the one who made the heaven and the earth. He promises to bring the change. It's coming! All prophecies are coming true just like bible says. Rev 11: 18

Jack and Jill shouted "drill baby drill"
in loud and shrill voices.

"More oil!" they bleated
while the planet heated.

Until they were out of choices.

Louisiana should just give up on the tourism industry and focus exclusively on the petro-chemical industry

Hey doofus, lets say we drilled Anwar tomorrow and drained it immediately dry. do you have any idea how long it would last? The answer is between 6-18 months total.

whoever told you this is the answer to our problems was either ignoroant or dishonest. You need to get better information.

Yeah, we can't do it right in the gulf, let's go and try to screw it up in the Arctic. That's some solid GOP logic there: if it's broke, don't fix it

Most likely reported by some green wacko that wished the subject stay alive. His Obamaness has tried various ways of saying the oil subject is still negotiable, but it is burying him with the energy and job issues swirling in the toilet.

Exxon, BP, and now.....? Naw - we don't need no stinkin' regulations on big oil or any protections for our oceans and natural creatures!

Just think, if the average American driver was as bad at following rules and maintaining their vehicles as Exxon and BP are, those 40,000 deaths a year on the roads of the US would shoot up to a dozen or so per decade..

wrong analogy-- or do you think platform workers are the only fatalities that resulted?

With Exxon just finding 700 million barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico, I'm sure there will be more rigs and more "unforeseable Events" in the Gulfs' future...

With that find alone, ExxonMobil will make $5.6 billion over the next 30 years. That's a average of $186 million a year. That's if they put $1 billion up front and trust that the US government to not default on their promises. Sounds too risky for me.

Real Americans care more about people than profits
03:07 PM on 06/09/2011
And do you know what makes that huge find of 700 million barrels, seem tiny? The fact that we use 19 million barrels a day, so that's like 36 days worth. Why are we willing to take a chance on destroying the gulf, for a months worth of oil?
03:15 PM on 06/09/2011
It's the same amount that's in the national oil reserves... A months worth if we are lucky... Billions in profits, that's Capitalism...

Hopefully. The oil-eating bacteria is getting hungry and starting to die off for lack of food. If we don't keep feeding them, their species might go extinct. Maybe we will put them on the endangered species lists.
