Anthony Weiner's Toughest Challenge: Facing Hillary Clinton Over Twitter Scandal

Anthony Weiner

First Posted: 06/09/11 12:50 PM ET Updated: 08/09/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Anthony Weiner has lost nearly all support in Congress, sources told The Huffington Post, but the embattled New York Democrat has an even tougher audience yet to face: He has to explain himself to Hillary Clinton, the formidable secretary of state he has come to regard as his honorary mother-in-law, people who know the Clintons and Weiner said.

"It scares me, and I'm nowhere near Weiner," said one Clinton-world insider. "I get nervous even thinking about it."

Weiner's elegant -- and reportedly pregnant -- wife, Huma Abedin, is beloved by the former first lady, who has kept Abedin as an aide for 15 years. Hillary Clinton even described her as a second daughter when Weiner and Abedin married last July.

Bill Clinton officiated at the ceremony, and guests described to The Huffington Post how Clinton kept telling them how much he loved Huma, as well.

Sources confirmed that the toxic Twittering congressman has apologized to the former president, who was displeased with Weiner. That fact alone had to be difficult for Weiner, who liked to talk about being part of the Clinton family.

Various aides declined to say, or could not say, whether Weiner had the same talk with Hillary Clinton, who infamously had to deal with her own husband's indiscretions. But people who know all the parties involved said the last place they would want to be was in Weiner's spot when he sees the secretary of state, who left Wednesday for a week-long Africa trip, taking Abedin with her.

The closeness of the relationship between Hillary Clinton and the 35-year-old Abedin is hard to overstate. The younger woman started with Clinton as an intern in the White House. She became a constant presence at Clinton's side in her Senate days and has remained there ever since, often facilitating Clinton's relationship with Bill.

"Every time Bill wanted to get his wife, he'd call Huma," said a source familiar with those calls. "I think she just became really important to both of them."

How Hillary Clinton will deal with Anthony Weiner is anyone's guess, but it likely will depend on how Abedin reacts.

That was complicated Wednesday by reports that she was pregnant. Starting a family while being a politician is a daunting prospect to begin with. Doing it while combating a sensational scandal is almost unimaginable.

Yet Abedin was said to be sticking with Weiner in the early going.

A source familiar with Weiner's damage-control planning said his bride participated, and had been prepared to stand by her man at his public mea culpa, but Weiner decided he deserved to face the press alone.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines did not comment for this story, but sources said he's advising Abedin. He told the Washington Post that Clinton's aide was "doing well under the circumstances."

The secretary of state is famous for being able to set aside even the most painful personal issues in order to focus on her job, but people who know her and Abedin are certain they will discuss Weiner's online embarrassments on the long trip because their relationship is so close.

"Huma is not a favored aide, she's not a close family friend. She is a daughter to Hillary, and to Bill," said one friend. "I walked away from that wedding saying, 'Holy shit. [Weiner] married a Clinton.'"

And the apology to Bill Clinton will pale in comparison to a talk with Hillary Clinton. "Apologizing to the president is hard enough, but he can't exactly take the moral high ground, can he?" said a source who knows all the people involved. "I'd be terrified of [Hillary]."

As of Thursday morning, Weiner still had no plans to resign, sources said.

"I think he is in a bunker, hoping to ride it out, and the only thing that will convince him it is untenable is if he arrives down here and the circus envelopes him every day, and members avoid him on the House floor, etc.," a well-connected Democrat said.

One source believed Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) could deliver the decisive blow by disavowing the congressman soon.

Another source said Weiner had lost House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), evidenced by leaders close to her declaring Weiner should resign. Among those was the head of the Democrats' House candidate recruitment committee, Pennsylvania Rep. Allyson Schwartz. Pelosi adding her name to the list would be another devastating strike against the disgraced rep.

. . . On the occasion of America’s 235th birthday, the activities of our State Department on behalf of sex workers instead of focusing on the many serious threats our country faces and the activities of György Schwartz, George Soros, on behalf of those threats are ominous warnings of our future. Thank God for the much-needed levity provided by Anthony Weiner! (Read more at http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=4945)

It won't even be discussed.
They'll talk about the weather and they'll both leave the meeting with red faces and continued permission to continue life as normal, sir.

I think Hillary will simply lop off Weiner's offending part and put it in a purse for his wife. His irresponsible, narcissistic, short-sighted and stupid actions have deflated his political effectiveness. I'm furious that one of the most cogent, clear and powerful voices for the people has behaved so stupidly in his private life and somehow assumed the two could be kept separate.

Who made the media our morality police? What is the sharing of "weiners" between consenting adults? The media wants to continue to tell us what we should find important. This is a non-issue, more akin to BS "National Enquirer" yellow journalism than something of national import. It's designed to sell sound bites and titilate the man-hating members of national "vaginal inspection" groups.

Look at how this has moved the spotlight off the misdeeds of politicians and Rep. Weiner's political efforts. There is now shame enough to go around and I agree with you that journalism has jumped on and is feeding off this like it's substantial, which it isn't. The "false outrage" machine is in full swing.

I don't think Weiner should quit if his constituents like his work as a congressman, but I do hope Hillary tears him a new one. I would give almost anything to be in on that meeting.

Yeah, I'd be afraid of facing Hillary too. She is one tough lady. OTOH, if his wife is cool with him sexting and no one was actually *doing* anything except on the 'Net, it's not my business. Actually, even if they *were* doing something, it ain't my business, although the resulting shellacking Hillary would give him would be good for some popcorn-munching amusement. Given how many *real* scandals are going on in Congress today, I'd say they long ago lost the high ground, and need to start building ladders so they can get out of the primeval pit they've been wallowing in of late.

The idea that facing Hillary Clinton is "tougher" than facing his wife is assinine.

You don't know Hillary, then. Huma Abedin is a sweet young woman. Hillary's been subjected to some of the most revolting attacks ever leveled at a woman and/or a politician. She is tough as nails and she *will* be reading Weiner the riot act. Your sweetie won't take a chunk out of your hide as long as they still love you. But your in-laws (and as this article points out, the Clintons are as good as his in-laws), and especially your MIL? Their whole life is dedicated to pointing out to you that you do not deserve their beloved child, and they are only tolerating you because said child has been so foolish as to be fond of you. Oy!

Hillary, I suspect, will be less forgiving than the wife. ... Bill probably has already let him off the hook, but Hillary? brrrrrr, I get chills thinking about it.

Every time I hear these people excoriate Weiner I get very cynical. Because all I can think about is Newt Gingrich. The ones who scream the loudest are the ones who usually have something hiding themselves. Not that I agree with what the congressman did but can we all cool it and stop being so self righteous and so indignant. Nobody is more embarrassed than the congressman right now and he must kicking himself. Mostly when these things happen I just laugh and say here we go again except when it is someone who pronounces himself morally superior to others and get get caught, then I will totally lose it.

Exactly. Today, Mark Foley went before the media to say that it was OK to sext underage people. Given his particular reputation, you'd think the guy would have *some* shame. But no. And David Vitter is the one calling for Weiner to step down. Hey, Dave, at least Anthony didn't have to pay for it, or get his name in the little black book of a famous -- and mysteriously expired -- madam.

Two reasons I believe that Bill Clinton is angry with Anthony Weiner.

First, Weiner was a shoe-in to be the next Mayor of NYC. I think that Bill had some serious plans to work with Mayor Weiner, on what I don't know, and that is now in serious jeopardy. Whether the Congressman toughs it out and survives this will determine that future.

Second, and probably more likely, is that Weiner's wife is close friends with Hillary. So the two of them are commiserating and sharing war stories. So now Bill is probably catching temporary hell from Hillary again.

Either way it's pretty funny. =)

It's time to drop the Weiner and get back to work. If he truly wants to remain in office and do the work of the people then he has bigger balls than are pictured in the photo. Let him redeem himself to the people through effort and work and leave the personal redemption to him and his family. He has a baby on the way, it's time to forget the nonsense and prepare to be a father.

check out the Chicago Sun Times about the ire of the Clinton's if you need reminding of the hypocrisy of the deceptive duo. it begins

'Even Bill Clinton is appalled' is the most unbelievable lead in I have ever read. And then this follows;
'The secretary of state is especially enraged because the sex scandal has reopened old wounds.' And this reminds people that if not for the Lewinsky scandal MRS Clinton would never have been senator let alone Secretary of State. Hillary may well be enraged but not by the behavior of the congressman but because of what it conjures up about the Clinton's unsavory lives.
I can understand given the long distant relationship of the congressman and his wife a need for some benign sexual activity so unlike Bill Clinton's actions when his wife was in the next room. And did Clinton resign? Jon Stewart said it best when he reported that Wiener called Bill Clinton to apologize: for what said Stewart copyright infringement?

Oh, please. No matter what Bill Clinton did, it doesn't come *close* to the monstrous hypocrisy of Henry Hyde, author of our Hyde Amendment. G.H.W. Bush openly flaunted his mistress while in public office. There isn't a one among our congresscritters who doesn't have blots upon their conscience. Sexual pecadillos are the least of it. Frankly, I'd rather have them involved in sex scandals than stealing my money. Their sex scandals usually involve a maximum of five or ten people. Whereas, when it comes to stealing money, they seem determined to involve the entire nation.
