New Delhi 'Slut Walk' Brings Global Sexual Violence Protest Phenomenon To India

India's most dangerous city for women will be the setting for the nation's first "Slut Walk," the latest such display in what has become a global phenomenon to protest sexual violence.

As the AFP is reporting, scantily-clad women will take to the streets of New Delhi, a city of 16 million residents, where a woman is allegedly raped every 18 hours or molested every 14 hours. Inspired by the original Toronto-based Slutwalk, New Delhi's colorful June 25 display will join similar protests which have taken place around the world, including in the U.S., the Middle East and Europe.

“Things are getting worse in Delhi for women and we haven’t been doing anything about it,” Umang Sabarwal, a 19-year-old theater student at New Delhi's Kamala Nehru College, tells the Toronto Star. “You get on a metro (subway) car here and men stare like animals at you, like you’re meat. It’s weird and yet most women are just silent about it.”

The international "Slut Walk" movement began in Toronto in April, after a local police officer reportedly told students at Osgoode Hall Law School that women should "avoid dressing like sluts" in order to avoid being sexually assaulted. The first Toronto-based demonstration reportedly drew 1,000 people, while similar demonstrations in 60 cities across the U.S., Europe and the Middle East have also been successful.

"Historically, the term ‘slut’ has carried a predominantly negative connotation," the website for Toronto's event reads. "Aimed at those who are sexually promiscuous, be it for work or pleasure, it has primarily been women who have suffered under the burden of this label. And whether dished out as a serious indictment of one’s character or merely as a flippant insult, the intent behind the word is always to wound, so we’re taking it back. 'Slut' is being re-appropriated."

The concept is extremely relevant in New Delhi, where a 2010 survey found that four out of five women claimed to have been verbally harassed and one-third were victims of physical assault, the New York Times is reporting. Judging from the event's Facebook page, the Indian event looks set to be a smash success, with over 5,000 attendees.

"The woman is always blamed for bringing on the rape," Sabarwal told the AFP. "We cast aspersions on the character of the woman, and her morals. It has to be her fault, doesn't it? The men are not at fault."

18-year-old dalit girl raped, 14-year-old blinded for resisting assault in Uttar Pradesh !!!
what is this going on???? Instead of promoting this stupid walk, I think people should work on the real solution. Its about time. These people are themselves saying that dressing is nowhere related to rape, then why the hell are you misleading people. Why can't you work on the real solution? Give punishment to the rapist in front of everyone(may not be death), this way even the illiterate would come to know about the crime done & the punishment given. Otherwise when you publish news in newspapers, the real criminal never come to know whether punishment is given or not. Because they are all illiterate. As simple as anything. Wake up and stop this publicity stunt.

Keep it up ladies, it's the good work.

And yeah, I'm a man that doesn't feel the need to denigrate women to feel self-worth.

" New Delhi, a city of 16 million residents, where a woman is allegedly raped every 18 hours or molested every 14 hours."

I think those numbers are wrong. They should be much higher than that. If they are right then the women should be happy rape is so rare in New Delhi.

For a city of 16 million these numbers are extremely low. It's on par with the murder rate of New York in the 80's. We are talking about 500 rapes a year. If those numbers are accurate then the 1 in 16,000 chance of a women being raped in a year translates to only 1 in 200 women being raped over their lifetime assuming every year carried equal risk from birth.

In USA 2009 we had 28.6 rapes per 100,000 and New Delhi would be 6.25 per 100,000.

Including verbal harassment makes the whole issue look silly. Four out of five woman hearing a guy say "hey sexy" on the street isn't a social crisis.

New Delhi is the worst. Our co-worker has a bad experience there. Thanks to her colleagues she was rescued.

It is very unfortunate the capital of a country that worship women and motherhood is not a safe place for women.

Happy to see the women in Delhi rise up and speak out. It's time for us women to realize our worth and it is time for men to respect women.

a rape every 18 hours in a city with 8 million males. that is 1.3 rapes per day or about 485 per year, that makes about .006% (one in 17,000) of the males in New Dehli commiting a rape each year, (assuming none are serial rapists). Good luck with your protest, ladies. I hope it helps

Yet another subject that could be improved with that terrible 'E' word: Education.
I happen to think sex education is the real starting point to reduce these and most crimes against any human. As far as I'm concerned, the destruction of education is purely a tactic of those who want to maintain control, instead of growing up and maturing through their fears. Not saying that this or isn't a good idea...it will certainly bring attention to the issue, which is an important part of resolving it. But attention to the issue isn't enough...knowledge is key. If they can direct those participating to drive the local education in their towns(speaking about U.S., since I don't know India) to support and properly fund education, including sex education, it would go a long way towards mitigating this behavior. Unfortunately, there will always be 'that guy/girl'...but that's still no excuse not to work on it in the first place...

Women need to start with the younger males. Your brother ,your son, your nephew. Teach them respect for women. I was taught by the women in my life since birth and the lessons continue Demand respect and don't be shy about it.

Women need to teach their daughters respect good men and take reasonable precautions to protect themselves from the very few men who are rapist. Remind that 95% of men are not rapist so they can report those who are to protect other women.

My thoughts Exactly. Sort of sending confusing signals with this. "I demand respect, despite my ridiculous outfit" The kinds of guys who need to hear the message are not going to know what to think.

I disagree. Men don't get told to cover up or they'll encourage the predators, unless they're doing a dime in the pen, and I tend to think that it's not a woman's responsibility to discourage assaults, though I certainly support women learning hand to hand combat/self defense and availing themselves as the same armament opportunities as anyone else.

By the way, I am a man. If I see a man attacking a woman, rest assured, I'm not going to be pretending it didn't happen like Kitty Genovese. I encourage women to fight back and this man is right behind them. But I am not going to tell the victim it's their fault for dressing provocatively.

You women must demand respect. Do not settle for anything less. March , scream ,fight, and stand firm . Women have to drag the male species out of the cave and into the modern world.

A couple of points here from having lived in India during my youth and having visited it a few times since 1998:

1) There is an inherent chauvinism that has been a part of Indian culture, 2) More women are now empowered to report instances of molestation and rape, 3) Even though the trains have a 'Ladies compartment', sometimes, women have no choice but to ride in the Men's compartment, due to overcrowding, which invariably leads to some sicko trying to get his 'jollies' from rubbing up against a woman, 4) I would warrant that more cases of these crimes go unreported among the poorer and illiterate class, where the women are exchanged for a dowry, 5) Indira Gandhi was the trailblazer who opened the door to women vying for political office. Several women now enter politics based on Indira's example of defying the subservient nature of women in India.

My sister and I would sometimes ride the bus in Mumbai because we attended the same college. On one such occasion, I was crowded into the back of the line and noticed my sister was standing in the front of the bus. A man decided he was going to rub up against her. I worked my way to stand behind this man. When he rubbed against her again, I punched his lights out. Of course, he screamed that the bus jolted him. None of the passengers remonstrated and my sis merely smiled in thanks.

I believe chauvinism can be found in every country, but it is up to each individual male in this country to be more moraly responsible. Until this is instilled into the moral compass of the entire country it will remain status quo. You would think a nuclear country would be a bit more civilized.

Something must be done to stop this. It is a horrific world that women from some of these countries live in. Whippings, stoning, beheading, raping - its mind numbing to think that a father could kill his daughter because she had sex.

However, this parade of women dresses scantily etc. is not going to help. I hope they are safe.

This issue has many twists. I have seen several men subjected to sexual politics. That is women who use threats of claims of sexual harassment to force men to promote them or at least to ignore their laziness or incompetence. Supervisors in today's workforce have to walk a very tight line between facing these women's threats and receiving condemnation by other workers or their own supervisors for failure to correct the poor performance of these women.
