Woman Mauled By Chimp Gets Face Transplant

Face Transplant Chimp Attack

First Posted: 06/10/11 01:35 PM ET Updated: 08/12/11 11:45 AM ET

BOSTON -- A Connecticut woman who underwent a full face transplant after an attack by a chimpanzee wants to eat hamburgers and pizza again.

Officials at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston say they performed the face transplant on Charla Nash late last month.

Nash's brother, Steve Nash, said at a news conference Friday that his sister wants to enjoy a slice of pizza from their favorite pizza parlor in their hometown of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The 30-member surgical team under the leadership of Dr. Bohdan Pomahac also performed a double hand transplant on Nash, but the hands failed to thrive and were removed.

Pohmahac says Nash will slowly regain facial functions over the next six to nine months.

John Orr, a spokesman for the Nash family, said Nash developed numerous health problems after the surgery and only recently regained consciousness.

"She developed pneumonia, she had kidney failure, she had the circulation issue with the hands," Orr said. "She's been under, so to speak, since this whole thing began, and now she's just starting to wake up."

Orr said he has not seen Nash, but is told by her brother, Stephen, that Nash looks "fantastic, in terms of the face."

Orr said the donor's identity has been kept secret, but was a "fairly consistent match" for Nash.

The donor can be as much as 20 years younger or up to 10 years older than the recipient and must have the same blood type and similar skin color and texture.

"She's not aware of the hands, that she lost them," he said. "She's still groggy. She's acknowledging with a nod that someone is there, but she still has pneumonia issues. The kidneys are back working, but she isn't aware of too much yet."

The 200-pound pet chimpanzee, named Travis, went berserk in February 2009 after its owner asked Nash to help lure it back into her house. It ripped off Nash's hands, nose, lips and eyelids, blinding her before being shot and killed by police.

The owner, Sandra Herold, has speculated that the chimp was trying to protect her and attacked Nash because she had changed her hairstyle, was driving a different car and was holding a stuffed toy in front of her face to get Travis' attention.

Nash's family is suing the estate of the chimp's owner, Sandra Herold, for $50 million and wants to sue the state for $150 million, saying state officials failed to prevent the attack. Herold, who had a tow truck business, died last year of an aneurysm.

Since the attack, Nash wore a straw hat with a veil to cover some of her injuries.

About a dozen face transplants have been done worldwide, in the U.S., France, Spain and China.

There have been two others performed at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dallas Wiens became the nation's first face transplant patient there in March.

The 25-year-old Fort Worth, Texas man received a new nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves from an unidentified dead person in an operation paid for by the U.S. military, which wants to use what is learned to help soldiers with severe facial wounds.

Wiens' features were all but burned away and he was left blind after hitting a power line while painting a church in November 2008.

Mitch Hunter, a 30-year-old Indiana man, received the surgery in April.

Hunter's face was severely disfigured and burned during a car accident that toppled high-voltage electrical wires. He also lost his left leg below the knee and two fingers.

The simultaneous face and hands surgery has been done only once before, in France in 2009, and that patient later died.

Nash's daughter went on NBC's TODAY to talk about her mother's surgery. WATCH:

Chimpanzee's are the most dangerous type of pet anyone can keep or raise. People get seduced by the cute little baby chimps that eventually grow into aggressive territorial creatures. And due to their intelligence are very calculating and brutal in there attacks. I would rather tangle with a big cat than a chimp. These creatures should be utterly banned from the US as pets. Anyone caught with a chimp as a pet should be fined the maximum and jailed for an extended period of time. A lot of Zoo keepers will tell you there more careful and wary of the chimpanzee exhibits then any other animals in there care. When they snap their attacks are ruthless, devastating and utterly cruel.

I wish her the best of luck, but this case demonstrates that we need to treat wild animals with the caution and respect that they deserve.

When people talk about "quality of life"...or the lack of....I get that. For myself.
But if you've ever seen an interview with Chana you see some kind of rare and unique spirit. One without anger or self pity..and retaining some amazing glee for life. Maybe it helps to have a wonderful loving and supportive family, I don't know; but she has something, myself included..that many of us lack. I am happy for her strides forward...
She is an amazing woman and a case of...don't judge a book by it's cover...
either literally...or subjectively.

all women should be with out fingers too so they cant pull the triger as well

I can see where that might be a problem for someone of such obvious compassion as yourself ....... It is quite obvious from your statement you are the north side of a south bound donkey!

What quality of life is left for this woman who was mauled? Her face is totally disfigured and she lost both hands. She will not be able to take care of herself, and looking in the mirror won't be pleasant for the rest of her natural life. Why is it always so important to keep a body breathing when the quality of life has been extracated from its natural state? We are animals, and sometimes we have to just allow nature take its course.
I'm sorry for this woman's terrible plight, but prolonging her agony is not, in my opinion, a worthy cause. And obviously God did not step in to save her or the chimpanzee, so there's no need to pray for full recovery. That's not going to happen.

Well what you say is true except for one thing...before the surgery she was completely cognizant. and Im sure she will recover to that point again. She went on national TV, did interviews and was a completely connected person who knew and loved herself, her life and her family.

And she will never have to see herself, she was blinded in the accident. I am in awe of her, I htink Id go insane if I woke up in her condition.

Damn '"NEGATIVE NED" you may want to read the entire story. First of all she is blind because the monkey ripped her eyes from their sockets. Second she is not a dog that has been run over by a car and we are going to pull the shot gun out and blast her. And third obviously she has a different God than you becasue she still has her faith.

They had to remove her eyes because of infection, they tried to save her sight at first.

I can't imagine ever enduring something so tragic. Charla is an amazing woman with an extraordinary will to continue her path in life. Thank you Charla, you're proof that we can overcome any obstacle life gives us. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family and I wish you all the best.

This is way too bad. She had a sweet and kind face, and then to lose it so tragically. I hope the transplant works out.

The owner of the chimp obviously had problems with it's temper and behavior before the mauling ever occured, b/c she said she had just given Travis his Ativan. And just b/c Ativan has a calming effect on humans doesn't mean it did on Chimpanzees. They have a different body chemistry than we do, beleive it or not, Ms. Herrold. RIP

Really, nobody should "own" a Chimpanzee or another exotic, nevermind shoving drugs down it's throat to keep it "in check". Unfortunate circumstance for all involved. :(

..And, Herrold has been dead for a year now.

Charla, don't give up on the facial functioning too soon. I know my affliction was not nearly as seriou as your's, but I had brain surgery 2 years ago. My neurosergeon kept telling the nerves and muscles would function in about a year, I was discouraged and kept having doubts. But, eventually it happened! The only problem I have is with one eyebrow which doesn't "raise" when I try to raise both. WHat ablessing. Healing nerves and muscles takes time. Don't get discouraged and don't give up! God bless you and bee with you!

Charla Nash has got to be the bravest lady in the world. I'd have given up a long time ago. Her daughter is a remarkable young lady as well...what a heartbreak for any teenager to have her mother hurt so horribly. God bless Charla's whole family, and the marvelous team of researchers, doctors, support staff, and the donor's family, who made the miracle of this transplant possible.
