First Posted: 06/11/11 10:40 AM ET Updated: 11/15/11 05:35 AM ET

Not feeling quite yourself today? Maybe even a little possessed by something truly evil?

Perhaps you make others around you nervous each time your head spins in a 360-degree turn as you spew green vomit.

Clearly you've been taken over by the devil who needs to be driven out. Who ya gonna call? For more than 20 years, people in Colombia have been seeking out Hermes Cifuentes, aka "Brother Hermes."

Hermes is a 50-year-old spiritual healer who performs nearly a dozen exorcisms each week.

Watch Brother Hermes in action:

Yee-ah... it's called mental illness. Both in the so-called possessed and the so-called exorcist.

It may look strange or silly to us but if the person claiming 'possession' truly believes that they're possessed then rituals like this can alleviate their psychic (as in mental) suffering. It's the same principal that makes placebos effective even when the patient is told up front that it's a placebo. Many people with serious mental illnesses, particularly those with bipolar and schizophrenia, do not believe they are ill and will often refuse to believe it even if they're told by doctors and loved ones but those with other illnesses such as depression do realize they're ill. It's very likely that those seeking healing from this man don't have serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia because they're actively seeking treatment but they may have other problems like depression, anxiety, personality disorders etc. that *can* be helped --at least temporarily-- by the attention and belief they have in such ceremonies.

Seriously, it's time.

I don't think anyone's denying that people with mental illnesses sometimes have trouble with recognizing and understanding reality.

After all, there's good money be made out of reflexology and homeopathy in otherwise well-educated communities, so perhaps hermes shouldn't be at the front of the line for special ridicule.

What I find offensive about this story is that it's being categorized in "weird news" –- why? This man is simply doing what the dictates of his morality are according to his culture, not anything "weird". This is just a first-world appellation of an ancient tradition, one that the majority of the world's culture adhere to. It's just offensive because it seems so pejorative to me.

Well, there really three monotheistic religions, but spirituality can pretty much transcends religion.

I would bet that a lot of the ceremonies this guy does have a lot of cultural influence, as well as Christian.
