'Super 8' Wins Box Office With $37.1 Million Weekend

Super 8

DAVID GERMAIN   06/12/11 02:08 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood's summer box-office streak has cooled a bit with a $37 million opening weekend for J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg's sci-fi tale "Super 8."

It was a healthy but unremarkable launch in a summer season whose newcomers often open with two or three times as much money. Released by Paramount Pictures, "Super 8" largely features a cast of young newcomers, the story centering on teen filmmakers and an alien entity that escapes from a wrecked train.

"The movie was never conceived to be a blockbuster, tent-pole film opening to $60 or $70 million," said Don Harris, head of distribution for Paramount.

Writer-director Abrams ("Star Trek," TV's "Lost") was inspired by his own youth as a Super 8 filmmaker who emulated such talents as Spielberg, a producer on "Super 8."

When the studio scheduled "Super 8" amid such known summer quantities as "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Kung Fu Panda" sequels, "there was some concern we were sending a signal that it was a big summer blockbuster," Harris said. "What we really wanted to do was find a place where the movie could open, find its audience and hopefully play for a long time."

"Super 8" bumped off the previous weekend's No. 1 movie, 20th Century Fox's comic-book prequel "X-Men: First Class," which slipped to second-place with $25 million. "First Class" raised its domestic total to $98.9 million.

After a string of blockbuster debuts in May and early June, Hollywood's overall revenues dipped for the first time in a month. Domestic receipts totaled $140 million, down 7.5 percent from the same weekend last year, when "The Karate Kid" led with $55.7 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

The weekend's other new wide release, Relativity Media's family flick "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer," opened weakly at No. 7 with $6.3 million. The movie follows a young girl's wacky summer adventures.

"Super 8" started with $1 million in sneak-peek screenings Thursday, giving it a domestic total of $38 million.

The movie added $6.7 million in nine international markets, including $2.7 million in Australia. It expands to about 15 more countries next weekend, among them Russia, Greece and Turkey.

Two sequels passed the $200 million mark domestically this weekend.

The Warner Bros. comedy "The Hangover Part II" came in at No. 3 with $18.5 million to become the year's top-grossing domestic release at $216.6 million.

Disney's action tale "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was No. 5 with $10.9 million, raising its domestic haul to $208.8 million.

Both movies topped Universal's "Fast Five," which had been the year's biggest moneymaker domestically. "Fast Five" finished at No. 10 with $1.7 million, lifting its domestic total to $205.1 million.

Worldwide, "On Stranger Tides" is the year's top earner, pulling in $886.8 million.

Overall business likely will be down sharply this coming weekend compared to the same period a year ago, when "Toy Story 3" had a huge debut of $110.3 million.

But revenues should rebound in late June and July as Hollywood delivers hotly anticipated sequels to the "Cars," "Transformers" and "Harry Potter" franchises.

"Summer may turn out to be a rollercoaster," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "May was so incredibly strong, and we're going to step back a little bit in June, then come back really strong in July."

Domestic revenues so far this year total $4.4 billion, down 7 percent from 2010 receipts.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Super 8," $37 million ($6.7 million international).

2. "X-Men: First Class," $25 million.

3. "The Hangover Part II," $18.5 million ($38.3 million international).

4. "Kung Fu Panda 2," $16.6 million ($56.5 million international).

5. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," $10.8 million ($41.1 million international).

6. "Bridesmaids," $10.2 million.

7. "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer," $6.3 million.

8. "Midnight in Paris," $6.1 million.

9. "Thor," $2.4 million.

10. "Fast Five," $1.7 million ($5.9 million international).

Elle Fanning was wonderful. Actually, all the child actors were great. And it was good to see Ron Eldard.

I saw it this past wkend and it was LAME. Very, very boring and was an attempt to create a film somewhere between E.T. and The Goonies. Epic FAIL.

It was good but not great. The fat kid and the little one who looks like Tom Petty were great. The ending was a lot like E.T, alien builds space ship and goes back home.

OMG!! I thought it was soooo boring and lame, lame, lame. It's The Goonies try to make a Zombie movie, but end up uncovering a Government-Alien coverup, with some love crap, some sentimental crap and fake lame drama thrown in.
I was really disappointed in this movie, it should have gone straight to DVD. I can't believe people liked it.

Only OK movie, more efforts like this and JJ could be on an M Night Shamalamadingdong career path. This movie can best be described as Goonies meets ET/Predator meets Tremors meets Transformers meets Alien franchise meets the day the earth stood still. A frankenstein's creature of already made films; that while acted sufficiently, particularly by Fanning the Younger, left me felt wanting more and more as the film went on. Did not live up to the hype of the uber top secret 'what does the creature look like?/ what is the matrix' pre-release campaign, another movie to add to the list.

I like it, I went and saw it this past weekend. Transformers it is not, but for a good family movie I thought it was great. I loved the kids, they were my favorite part and I hope to see them in more films.

Super 8 Is ET with teeth. I absolutely loved it. This is a movie where if you suspend your disbelief , allow your heart to feel and let the kid inside you take over for two hours you'll end up having an amazing good time. I laughed, I screamed, I jumped off my seat a couple of times and yes I even cried a lil.

I couldn't wait for Super 8 - been following the viral campaign for almost a year. The first trailers were great - scary, with that Spielberg look to them... but as more and more information leaked out, the sinking feeling set in; this was not going to be the "better Cloverfield" I was looking for - it is just Abrams/Spielberg's attempt at a modern E.T. - more of a coming of age story than a sci-fi picture. A few scenes seemed to pay direct homage to ET and even Close Encounters - and you will swear they stole E.T's eyeballs and shoved them into the monster during the final scenes. Throw in some really unlikely occurrences (like a pickup truck causing train cars to fly through the air) and this movie, with the incredible build-up it had, just fails miserably (to me). I am completely done with JJ Abrams.

I liked it a lot. I think that it was very well done and that the children actors they cast were fantastic. It was kind of a hybrid between Cloverfield and E.T. I think it was more unique than anything I've seen in a while. I would definitely recommend it.

As a whole the movie feels derivative and there are a TON of homages in it, including amusingly a moment of what sounds like the Imperial Death March song.

Largely this feels like a cross between ET and Jaws, but is missing the 'key moment' ' in each film that ties everything together. (In ET its the whole phone home thing and the glowy finger, in Jaws its the Indianapolis speech) I think it tries to make up for it with some admittedly well done special effects though, not to spoil it for anybody, but military hardware doesn't work the way its shown at the end.

Where this movie actually shines is the quiet moments, the interactions between the kids, the slowly revealed back story with the parents. The budding relationship shown between Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney feels largely genuine and is portrayed sweetly.

On the whole, this movie is worth a watch, though it doesn't benefit much from being on a large screen given the tight shots on the actors, and minimal use of the large format. Then again, who bothers to do justice to large screens these days, when movies hit the shelf on DVD in as little as two months?

Long story short: I liked it, its worth watching.

Agreed on every point. The alien backstory via the old movies the kids watched felt like a cheap way out by the filmmakers. Spielberg and Abrams can do so much better than that, and built very little empathy/sympathy for the alien, whose plight was too choppy and poorly conveyed.

The kids were the best part of the movie. Excellent casting and very believable. Loved getting to watch their finished movie as the credits rolled.

Well worth matinee prices ($7 in Oakland, CA), no desire to see it again though.

I loved Super 8. There were so many well written, acted, and directed scenes that I think I'm going to go see it again. It did remind me of Goonies a little bit, but only because it tossed you into the mix with a group of young boys and their delusions of grandeur. LOL

Also, it was a testament to the genius of Spielberg clearly in his element here that not only did I crack of laughing a couple times, but he managed to make these characters so 3 dimensional in such a short time. Many scenes were so subtlely and eloquently presented that it made these connections seem effortless.

Even the adult stories were presented with particular care. It makes you realize how little this happens in today's movies.

It was the relationship between the lead, Joe, and Alice, Elle Fanning, which was most wonderful though. When Alice started sobbing watching the video of Joe's mother, I had to keey myself from sobbing. LOL

What a breath of fresh air. I'll be recommending it to my mother as well.

I saw this film today. I really did enjoy it! I thought the acting by the kids were really good and the story was touching and exciting.

it was entertaining, but I could have waited for the dvd. I would have liked more story development, like where was the train headed and why?
