I don't know if God exists because I have never seen any proof that he/she/it is a reality. I have witnessed instances, where a belief in God has helped people make it through difficult situations. For some people, faith provides something to anchor them when the world is spinning out of control. I have no problem with people believing in God, as long as they don't try to impose those beliefs on me.
10:17 AM on 07/26/2011
Very well put. I also don't have an issue with people believing in God. Nor do I have an issue with them trying to impose their beliefs on me. If what they say is powerful enough...compelling enough... makes sense... I'll take a look. I'll explore for myself. Who knows perhaps there's something I've Missed...

But I really don't mind that type of experience. It serves to either increase my own understanding or perspective which is cool for me.

I've never experience a person actually attempting to "IMPOSE" their beliefs on me. They have tried to share their perspective, or pride in their beliefs. But that's about it.

I've heard that before..."As long as they don't try to "IMPOSE" those beliefs on me."
I must say that in most cases it was uttered by an insecure, closed mind who's faith was so week and fragile they felt threatened whenever a new idea or perspective was presented.
They show their faith by closing their eyes, and shoving their index fingers into their own ears.

And in an Ironic seizure, some even go so far to avoid having "Those beliefs IMPOSED on them". ..... They'll actually IMPOSE rules against someone else because of...their beliefs.

When I see this happen, I want to ask those insecure, closed minds, What are you so afraid of?...Where is your faith?

"Two minutes"
Then the man in rags asked, "What are these books?".
To which the man of books responded, "You wouldn’t know".
The questioner moved his hands, and the books caught fire.
"What was that!", asked the bookman.
"Self induced delusion. We’re all capable of it", came the reply. "So if you’d like to know more, I'm not going to disappear".

Seems a few posts critical of this video have vanished. Cen$orship is bad, Mmm.. k?

I agree that this video is lackluster and lacks substance, but most of the user comments were just asinine. The video is about religious tolerance and that was a point that many people overlooked.

That was mostly two minutes of a man speaking gibberish from different camera angles. All that was said was a bunch of incoherent and meaningless mumbo jumbo. To even ask for evidence of what Eboo Patel said is pointless, as he didn't really say anything.

Great, more gibberish!

What do you even mean by "you will as all evolve"? Evolution is a gradual change occurring over many many generation. Are you somehow suggesting future non-homo sapien humanoids will know?

Really... but your mileage may vary.

How utterly ironic that you used the term "A.D.", which is an abbreviation for "Anno Domini", meaning "Year of the Lord".

Was the vacuum cleaner commercial shown in order to make Patel look good? Or is two minutes of wisdom the equivalent of peddling vacuum cleaners. Saying nice things about religion without questioning it, admittedly the standard formula for witnessing, amounts to mumbling or what philosopher Wittgenstein called "idling." It is just filler.
06:15 PM on 06/13/2011
this is complete bulshit because this is made up prescription; brain washing.
We don't need god or religion to be the best we can be - morally, spiritually whatsoever.

Science is a great tool to explore and understand our place in the world by facts.
We should be smarter and humbler like Carl Sagan , not like these self appointed and confused people trying to peddle trash ideas that actually prevent our enlightement.

This is what you need to do.

1)Find a thesaurus/dictionary.
2)Look up smart/intelligence.
3)Stop pretending spirituality makes you deep.

We all know the truth, deep in our heart and soul.

We all remember the love of God, in the deepest recesses of our soul memory.

Enlightenment is like remembering it, and it is as if we are reborn and see the world anew.

Untill then, we struggle. We are in conflict with others because we (or they) seek dominance. And we are even in conflict with ourselves in our internal dialogue, between what is right and what is wrong -- and often we try to justify ourselves even while fearing we are wrong.

You should know that no one can tell you what you need to know most.

That comes not from any person, nor any book, nor anything else in this world. It comes only from within, when you very least expect it.

realization comes in an instant sometimes even if you dont even know that there is such a thing as a realization. a new awareness then a smile then something you cannot give to anyone else. cannot be earned or bought or anticipated.

maybe an environment can be created for a realization to occur but for most maybe not.

a realization is as rare as a confirimed materialist and a fundamentalist evangel holding hands and each one saying to the other "I know not" at the exact same time. ok that was my idea of an analogy.
08:39 PM on 06/14/2011
Yes, for most maybe not. Sadly.

However, for those who realize what is within us, that realization brings the realization that both the firm materialist and the firm religious fundamentalist are in the same boat, and they had better stop rocking it lest they tip it over and drown.

Even an enlightened person cannot fathom God. He or she can witness it, and realize it within, and feel the ecstacy of its reality, but not understand it, or describe it. It is indescribable, and infinitely beyond the capability of our puny mind to understand it.

Please do not arrogantly deign to speak for us all. I, for one, have no memory of the love of any god. The reason for this is simple: There is no god and there is no ego soul. There are, however, delusions and you appear to be caught up in some.

Enlightenment is nothing more or less than being right where you are, 100%.

And please don't spam off-topic links into discussions.

Dear BurtonDesque,

I do not "deign to speak for all." I think you missed the point, and read into it what is not there.

There is no "ego soul," as you say. We have a soul, and yes, we have an ego, but never the twain shall meet, because the the soul can come through only when the ego "dies" or sheds its self-delusion.

You may not "remember the love of any god," as you say, but it's because your ego has convinced yourself that there is no God. And you think you judge rightly.

I don't blame you. Religious fundamentalists calling themselves Jews and Christians and Muslims have given God a bad name. But they don't know God either.

However, to take your position is as if you have painted yourself in a corner. So let the paint dry, then step out of the corner and paint the spot where you've stood waiting.

True enlightenment is much more than you think. And where you are is not it.

As for the link I cited, it is spot on topic.

his point was intellectualism is not divine intelligence. way over your heads for now but the time will come when you will understand it completely. if not in this life then another.

until then hang out with the context thing. :-)

religion visionary is an oxymoran. religion like materialism is at the lower end of the evolution of consciousness scale or phase. time will reveal that to you. no exceptions.

reality based is divine, this needs to read from your comments materialism based community.
