Fathers Day Gifts: For The Couch Potato Dad

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/14/11 03:16 PM ET   Updated: 08/14/11 06:12 AM ET

Almost three out of every four men is overweight or obese in the United States -- with more than 30 percent falling into the obese category. The health consequences of obesity are sobering -- the CDC has linked the condition to coronary heart diseases, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, reproductive problems and mental health conditions, to name just a few.

But according to CDC statistics, a whopping 50 percent of men report that they never engage in vigorous activity during their leisure time for more than 10 minutes -- a key component of keeping weight under control, especially as men get older.

So, as part of our series on healthy Father's Day gifts, here's your guide to presents that will get dad moving -- and hopefully healthier by the next Father's Day. Check them out and share your own ideas, as well.

PLUS: Feeling lucky? Enter for a chance to win the ultimate Healthy Dad Gift Package -- which includes sneakers, athletic clothing, a Tupperware lunchbox and a massage gift certificate -- here.

Sneakers And Workout Gear
1 of 7
No one wants to hit the gym with ill-fitting workout clothes and sneakers. Even if Dad isn't a fashionista, he'll appreciate having the right gear to fit him now -- not 10 pounds ago. If you're not sure on a style, let him pick out his own pair this Sunday, and then go for a family run -- several studies have identified a link between social support and weight loss goals.

(And enter for a chance to win our Father's Day Giveaway here -- it includes a pair of sneakers and cool workout gear).

More practical gifts would be a cemetery plot or a custom tombstone . None of those other gifts will move a lard a** of the sofa .

Like a couch tater is going to use most of these gifts! Now get him a lazy-boy chair with a built in remote, fridge, and microwave and he will love it.

lol, those are the kinds of things I thought this article was about. If I got any of these things, it would just be a waste of money.

This is kind of a lame list, why don't you make a list of gifts for dads who are couch potatoes and would like to stay that way? My dad hardly leaves the computer, he would hate it if I got him one of those gifts. It's like an insult!

My dad just celebrated his 75th birthday. He is 50 pounds lighter than he was last year and has a goal of 20 pounds per year. My dad proves to me one is NVER to old to make changes for the better in your life. He is a real inspiration to me and others around him. I love my dad.

@DeVoodoo, bacon is so played out. I think sentimental gifts are in this year, customized photo cards and books, or have steaks or Maine lobsters delivered to Dad...

I listed all my Thoughtful Gifts ideas here: http://www.skinnyscoop.com/list/larissa/grown-up-fathers-day-gifts

When I trained for my first marathon in 2007, my dad said, "Why would anyone want to run 26 miles. I can't run from here to the mailbox." He's not yet 70 and he lives his life on the couch marking time from one commercial break to the next. His very power example is one set by the example of exactly how not to be. When I run, I run because he can't. I run because he won't.
