Gay Marriage Bill Nixed By French Parliament

Gay Marriage

06/14/11 02:27 PM ET   AP

PARIS -- French lawmakers on Tuesday rejected a bill presented by the opposition Socialist Party seeking to legalize same-sex marriage, despite growing public support for gay rights.

The vote reflected opposition to gay marriage among President Nicolas Sarkozy's governing conservatives and the strain of traditional values that runs through many parts of France – away from the gay-friendly bars and neighborhoods of Paris.

The National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, turned down the measure by 293 votes to 222. Opposition was led by Sarkozy's UMP, while Socialists and other leftists supported the bill, which said "marriage can be contracted by two people of different sexes or of the same sex."

Supporters say France has fallen behind the curve on gay rights, as nearby countries like Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands have legalized gay marriage.

Earlier this year, France's highest court ruled that laws banning gay marriage don't violate the constitution. The esteemed Constitutional Court said any change would be up to parliament to decide.

In France, same-sex couples can form civil unions, but those do not confer inheritance rights or joint custody of goods, among other things.

France's very vocal gay rights groups say their efforts are making progress, crediting improving media coverage and role models like Mayor Bertrand Delanoe of Paris, who came out publicly years ago.

A January poll published by Canal Plus TV found 58 percent of respondents in France believe gays should be able to marry, up from 45 percent five years ago. No margin of error was given.

Gay, gay, gay, gay, gay. Homo-centric much?

It's same sex marriage (or marriage equality), not gay marriage. Even the proposed legislation refers to it the correct way. Not all LGBT people are gay.

Personally, I would argue we're fighting for "bisexual marriage" to be technically correct, but of course the gay agenda would never grant that type of public endorsement, as it could detract from their cause. (Bisexual people are frequently shunned by the gay and lesbian community -- at least in America. I can't speak for the rest of the world.)

Remember we're fighting for sexual freedom in the LGBT space, not further discrimination and rejection. Please let's abandon the suggestion of "gay superiority" with every queer-focused article. All socially accepted sexual orientations are created equal and deserve equal protections under the law.

293 to 222, and 58% public support. I give it about three years before France passes it. In 10 years it gay marriage will be the standard throughout Europe and North America.

Again it is the left and centre left that are fighting for a libertarian cause.I know that the right wing in the US have stolen that label but their worldwide record of backing sexism, homophobia and racism makes the label a hollow one ,(libertarianism began on the French left opposed to the conservative and royalist state ).Also the right wing really only back liberty for a tiny clique of oligarch;s..such as the Koch's,Murdoch's and other accumalators of wealth and the power over the rest of us.How can anyone stand against equality for gay people..and yet it is always the conservatives that do..from France to America.

Most of the people calling themselves Libertarians today...are just disgruntled Republicans. Their resemblance to actual Libertarians pretty much ends there. Ron Paul is an actual Libertarian who chose to run as a Republican...because nobody votes for Libertarians. Most people want far more government in their lives than Libertarians do. As a Libertarian...I want my government to protect the countys borders and me from bullys. Other than that...I don't need it for much. There are people who see the government as a solution to problems, legitimately...there are people who see the government as the problem, also legitimately.Neither side owns the right or the wrong...there's plenty of both on either side. As a Libertarian and an atheist...I support everyones rights. I'm Pro-Choice on Everything. If there's no choice...there is no liberty...(sigh)

When did France stop being the "light of the world"?

Their policies and laws are looking so archaic and old-fashioned.

Sad to see a nation that contributed so much enlightenment to our civilization get mired down and frozen in time.

When did France start being "the light of the world"?

I am racking my brain to think of something France has really contributed, all I have is food. HOWEVER, they did have an internet-like thing starting in the 80's which was pretty cool and of course used to look at porn.

Anyone who would write such an utterly absurd and ignorant comment must not have much of brain to rack!

How about you start with American Independence and move on from there!

I will never understand the controversey regarding this issue.

Marriage is a legal institution AND a religious one.

If you wish to be married in your religious institution, go for it. You want to get a marriage license...got for it. I don't care either way.

Where I get really confused/angry is when for RELIGIOUS reasons you try to tell others they can't get a government issued license...how you can say you have the RIGHT to force your RELIGIOUS views on ME and the try to use them to affect government policy is proposterous...please, somone who is anti-gay marriage, explain to me how a gay couple applying for a marriage license from the state should be illegal.

I totally agree with you BUT read the article again !

"In France, same-sex couples can form civil unions, but those do not confer inheritance rights or joint custody of goods, among other things."

If their Civil Union DID this I think the need for a "Marriage" would be irrelevant.

Civil Unions are irrelevant to my point. I would like for a anti-gay marriage proponent to explain to me why their religious views on marriage should stop a same sex couple from applying for a state issued license?

since the Bible calls homosexuality an abomination, Both the Old and New Testaments condemn the act, so don't be surprized when a Christian Nation rejects gay mariage, it's not bigotry, it's called obeying God.

Christians are not only called to share God's saving Grace, but also to a cultural commission which also means to uphold the created institutions of family that glorify God...Separation of Church and State here, is to protect religion from the government not government from religion! the culture doesn't exclusively belong to the hedonists!

Is it beyond the comprehension of Christians to suspect that the writers of the Bible never heard of bio-chemistry ? The Bible has been notoriously wrong on other things contained in it. Is it not reasonable that this might be the case concerning homosexuality ? Sexual preference is biochemical...sex isn't sinful...sex is normal. Reasonable people know these things to be true...by applying reason. There are good things contained in the Bible...there are also absurd things contained in the Bible. It takes the application of reason to determine the difference...(sigh)

This reminds me of like a soundbite I heard recently :

"Over the last few weeks, we've beatified a Pope, watched a Royal Wedding, started a crusade and slain a Moor. Welcome back to the Middle Ages!"

I suppose this vote fits right in with the present mood...

I really hope you are joking! That's like saying the African American People of this country were over represented during the civil rights movement! The GLBT group has every right to the rights that every other heterosexual person has. And to think for one moment we are going to take a back seat and accept second rate representation.....is a joke!

African Americans have ask the gay community repeatedly to stop comparing, blacks did not have the same rights as whites! gays have the same rights as every American to marry the opposite sex, you want to over throw our laws to suit your carnal desires!
08:51 AM on 06/15/2011
I understand completely why they voted 'no'; there are no gay people in France.

Doesn't matter that 58% of people asked support gay unions because politicians have no obligation to represent the people who voted for them. S(h)ame the world over.
