Mexico Drug War: 70 Percent Of Guns Seized Originate In U.S.

Mexico Guns

By MARK STEVENSON   06/13/11 09:23 PM ET   AP

MEXICO CITY -- About 70 percent of the guns seized in Mexico and submitted to a U.S. gun-tracing program came from the United States, according to a report released by three U.S. senators Monday.

Of the 29,284 firearms recovered by authorities in Mexico in 2009 and 2010, 20,504 came from the United States, according to figures provided to the senators by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Most of those weapons – 15,131 – were U.S. made, while another 5,373 were of foreign manufacture but had moved through the United States into Mexico.

The ATF said the remainder of the weapons total – 8,780 arms – were of "undetermined origin due to insufficient information provided."

The figure of the number of guns arriving in Mexico from north of the border has been polemical ever since a June 2009 U.S. report covering earlier years said that 87 percent of guns seized in Mexico came from the United States.

While the report did not specify why the percentage had changed, the most recent figures appear to included more gun-trace reports, as the reporting program in Mexico became easier to use.

Evidence that U.S. weapons trafficking has been fueling a bloody drug war that has cost more than 35,000 lives in Mexico since late 2006 has angered many Mexicans.

On Saturday, in a speech to the Mexican-American community in San Jose, California, President Felipe Calderon lashed out at the U.S. weapons industry.

"I accuse the U.S. weapons industry of (responsibility for) the deaths of thousands of people that are occurring in Mexico," Calderon said. "It is for profit, for the profits that it makes for the weapons industry."

The report, issued by Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California and two other senators, recommended background checks for sales at gun shows, a ban on the import of nonsporting weapons and the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban in force in the United States until 2004.

Calderon endorsed calls for reinstating the ban on domestic sales of assault rifles, saying its expiration in 2004 may have played a roll in the increase of drug violence in Mexico.

"You can clearly see how the violence began to grow in 2005, and of course it has gone on an upward spiral in the last six years," Calderon said.

Let's do some math! According to SEDENA, in 2009 and 2010, 129,200 guns were seized in Mexico. According to ATF, in 2009 and 2010, 20,504 guns were traced "to the US". That works out to a percentage of 15.87%.

BUT, we have to factor out, roughly, 1,500 guns that were trafficked by the US Government . That leaves us with 19,000 guns traced (potential ly) to "lax US gun laws", or a percentage of 14.7%.

BUT, we still do not know (Because Mexico is not saying) how many of those 19,000 US guns were originally legally sold to the Mexican government or military.

Bottom line? AT MOST 14.7% of crime guns (and 0.0% of crime grenades, RPGs and heavy machine guns) can be traced to civilian sales in the United States.

Mexicos Prez Calderone curses Arizona for protecting themselves from the filthy violence that his backward third world nation produces. Mexico needs to look at Mexico to solve Mexicos problems. The USA isnt to blame for every problem in the world. OVERPOPULATION and unemployemnt is a bigger problem to Mexicos economy than the USA. But the Catholic church prohibits women from using birth control.Calderone should be angry at the pope for the toilet his country has become- not the USA. Mexico would be even worse off if 1 in 10 of its citizens wasnt here in the USA sending money back home. Remittances from the USA is the second largest source of revenue in Mexico's economy after oil. They are not a poor country. Only a poorly managed one.

Mexican drug cartels have submarines, RPGs, helicopters, and armored personnel carriers, but regulating American gun sales will somehow be the wrench that brings them to a halt?

Yeah. That doesn't pass the sniff test at all.

It seems like the article is only telling half the story. How can 20,504 weapons mmade in the Us flow into Mexico in a 12 month period? Given the fact that US manufacturers sell weapons to the Mexicsan Gov and how many Mexican officals have been fired/indicited/killed as being members of the cartles, how many of these weapons were from legal sales? Did the senate report hide these numbers? Calderon wants the US to ban gun sales but is against sealing the borders? An open border promotes drug and gun smuggling which finances the durg wars. The first priority to an effective grug war would be to secure the border. The second would be to monitor the banking industry which launders the billion dollar drug industry. Neither is a top priority which means war on drugs, in Mexico and the US, means that there is a fundlemental flaw in the war. Just like with this senate report, something is being left out.

"Did the senate report hide these numbers? "

Does anyone have ANY link to a breakdown of the gun traces? I imagine that the BATFE has information on what they found. Presumably there is a written report to the Senate that includes more detailed information. Do you think that Senators are just accepting a verbal "summary"?

US gun policy is the failure in this case my friend. you can call Calderon whatever you want, and its probably true. That doesn't change the fact that the US fuels the drug trafficking and violence in Mexico. Yes, "the fact".

Please put your so called "facts" into print ! These statistics spoken of have already been ruled as false by the US Justice Dept. , so what else ya got !!!

Let's see . . . Mexico generally prohibits its citzens from keeping and bearing arms, and the result is that armed criminal gangs get guns anyway and then use them to terrorize the unarmed populace.

Obviously, we should copy Mexico's policies here in the US. It's not like we have 300 million guns laying around or anything.

Dave I appreciate your fine use of sarcasm, yep if they took our rights away to keep and bear arms we could have mass graves all over the place too, how wonderful would that be?

Yeah they do, the problem is that a next door neighbor does not. hence the article Einstein.

Even if the next door neighbor did so, the next door neighbor has 300 million guns laying around, almost none of which are registered. It would be impossible to round up even a significant portion of those 300 million guns. Once it was illegal to possess guns, the remaining guns would become concentrated in the hands of those who are willing to violate criminal laws. How would this play out? Let's look at Mexico and see.

Your reference to Einstein tells me that you understand the importance of underlying assumptions. However, your argument is based on the untenable underlying assumption that it is possible to eliminate guns from the United States. This is not a realistic possibility. It's sort of like when people say that the public policy "answer" to birth control and unwanted pregnancy is just to teach abstinence. (Hey, who cares if it's totally unrealistic.)

....so this is what they are going to use as an excuse to control who gets guns in this country. Then watch our government continue to control our lives and tighten the noose to choke us out. Population control at its best.

and the propaganda campaign seems to be in full swing.

even if many of the weapons did come from the US, one would have to consider the millions upon millions of firearms the US gov sent to south America over the last 75 years. No doubt many of them are involved in this, and its not being mentioned because it wont suit their purpose.

"They are talking about guns coming directly from the US.

They did not distinguish between US made guns given by our gov't to the Mexican police/military and US civilian guns.

I wonder why they made that omission?
