Minnesota Nonprofits Prepare For Government Shutdown

As Minnesota Gov. Dayton and Republicans remain in stalemate over the budget, nonprofits statewide are preparing for the worst in the event of a government shutdown.

Thousands of nonprofit organizations rely on government money, with many mandated by the state to provide services. But that pipeline would close if the government shut down, KARE 11 reports.

People with disabilities, the elderly and those with mental health issues would be most at risk, Jeannie Fox of Minnesota Council of Nonprofits tells KARE 11.

"This would be unprecedented in Minnesota history."

At risk are organizations such as Cornerstone, a women's shelter in a suburb outside of Minneapolis. Laura Mortenson-Bratsch started going there five years ago to escape domestic violence. She fears losing services.

"That would absolutely be devastating to families like mine because otherwise we walk alone. We feel so alone."

The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits is holding briefings statewide over the next few weeks to help nonprofits figure out how to deal with a government shutdown.
