The New Republic:

As the July 9 date for the secession of South Sudan approaches, something very ugly is happening in Sudan. Northern Sudan has initiated a series of violent affronts on contested regions: the border region of Abyei last month, and now, South Kordofan, a northern state whose inhabitants mainly identify with the South. While the assault on Abyei has resulted in an already acknowledged humanitarian crisis, the consequences of the attack on Kordofan are likely to be even more severe.

Actually S Sudan has a lot of oil that's most likely he reason why N Sudan doesn't want them to Lea e or they won't really have a strong economy like the s does.

Of course.
Despite an indictment for war crimes and genocide, Sudan's Bashir has been protected by the entire arab league which sees no problem to ethnically cleansing more lands for arab expansionism.

This story is not gonna get much traction in the Citadel of Democracy. The only reason we heard about events in Sudan was BIG OIL. Now the problem is resolved, the country is split up, oil is easily accessible to western companies and China lost some control over oil fields in the south...mission accomplished. If locals kill each other, US would not care.

Sudanese? Who cares? They're African.

Just 14 comments on Huffington Post. That should tell you something.

For the few that do care.

Never forget that the genocide in Darfur, largely ignored by the worthless and corrupt U.N., which we should not provide funding for, was committed by muslims. Those in the south need to be protected. The African Union must step in. We are spread too thin, especially with the foolish war started by Obama in Libya where the 'rebels' may be even worse than the evil Gadhafi, who at least was fighting al Qaeda in Libya.

This is unacceptable. The US needs to step up and do something. Pressure Sudan politically, go to the African Union, establish a no-fly zone, etc. Start pressuring the countries that keep hosting Bashir in defiance of the ICC arrest warrant (Malaysia, I'm looking at you right now).

What else should the "First" World expect from its neglect of the "Third" world, primarily by the United Ststes? We tend to ignore them or conduct war on them, depending on our self-interests.

Depressing news , war crimes on a massive scale.

Sudan does have oil but they sell it to the Chinese unlike Libya who sells to europe.

Why not boycott Chinese products as they help fund the sudanese troops ?

It's too bad that the US won't help these people. They must not have oil.
