Burger King Introduces Spam Burgers For The Women Of Japan

Spam

If there is one thing women love it's ... Spam?

Well at least Burger King hopes they do. The self-proclaimed royals of the fast food industry will launch mini Spam sliders on June 20 to the lucky women in Japan.

"What women want, what women get" is the slogan for the mini bites of canned ham, prompting the question -- just how many women have been demanding Spam?

While Spam is often joked about in the US, according to the Daily Mail, it's "surprisingly popular" in Japan.

The sliders aren't Burger King's first dalliance with the canned meat. In 2007, Hawaii stores debuted the Spam Platter -- two slices of the meat between white rice and scrambled eggs.

Residents of Hawaii, like the Japanese are fans of the iconic food, where according to MSNBC there are more varieties sold than anywhere else in the world, with residents consuming more than 5 million pounds of it each year.

Burger King Japan seems to pride themselves on offering items you can't get anywhere else. In April they released the "Meat Monster," a modified Whopper with two beef patties, bacon and a grilled chicken breast, that clocked in with 1160 calories and 24 grams of fat.

In college (1964), my roommate and I used to cut slices into a loaf of Spam, insert cloves into the slices and the drizzle honey over the loaf and bake it and serve it with canned pineapple and peas. Yumm. Of course, it had nothing to do with my bypass surgery 40 years later :))

About twice a year, I fry some up. Too much sodium normally, but once in a while it tastes pretty darn good. My family likes it too.

I hate to admit it but I do love Spam. I haven't bought it in years but I love it fried on top of hot white rice.

I had never eaten Spam until I dated a Filipina chick who cooked it for dinner. For some reason Filipina's love that stuff. Luckily I have never had to eat it again after breaking up with her.

Seven of us on a friend's 51 foot Swan went sailing from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau and back. Each of us was responsible for planning and preparing one day's menu.

We've sailed past Bimini and I am preparing lunch. I announce to my mates that we are having fried Spam sandwiches with onions (and the condiments of their choice). To a man they loudly complained and said they would rather starve then eat Spam.

The 5 cans of Spam I brought produced 15 hearty sandwiches...it was not enough!

About the only difference between Spam and a hot dog is the shape. Both are made from the scrapes scraped off the slaughter house floor....with seasoning added....I'd eat an old sneaker before either one of those two hunks of garbage.

I'm not sure about BK....but spam would be a great improvement over the junk Mc D's calls hamburger

Spam's not a stretch for the Japanese palate. Look at all the pork dishes in Okinawan cuisine. And Spam musubi has been popular in the Pacific ever since US military brought the infamous meat to the region in WWII. The only reason I think BK would pander to the ladies is that BK might think they make the food decisions for their families.

TopDog begs to differ with the WWII genesis of spam musubi, he seems to recall noticing the enticing treats in the 70's. Correct him if he is wrong.

TopDog....It was popular during WWII....i remember my Dad talking about it when i was grossed out when he made spam and eggs....I wouldn't feed that crap to my mushi...also in this season of Top Chef Master's, a soldier was talking about how much they missed spam overseas....he lived in Hawaii....
