Christina Aguilera Talks Childhood Pain, Divorce, Superbowl Screwup, 'Burlesque' Failure In W Magazine

Christina Aguilera W

It's been a tough last year for Christina Aguilera. But then, it's not like she hasn't dealt with worse.

The 30-year old singer takes one of two W Magazine covers this month, opening up about a series of unfortunate events she's suffered over the last year, the childhood pain she still carries, and how she keeps her head up through it all. Not surprisingly, the coping starts with a song.

“I felt caged by my childhood. And unsafe: Bad things happened in my home; there was violence," she confessed to the magazine. "'The Sound of Music' looked like a form of release. I would open my bedroom window to sing out like Maria. In my own way, I’d be in those hills.”

It was her Grammy-winning voice that brought her trouble on the biggest stage of the world last February, when she flubbed the lyrics to the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.

“Everything on the field at the Super Bowl was vividly bright, and I was having a moment,” Aguilera said about that embarrassing mistake. “I got lost in the emotion of being there and I messed up the lyrics to the song.”

She took it well, though; while she knew that it'd get major play in the media, she tried to laugh it off.

“I went to dinner after the Super Bowl with Matt and I laughed about how I’d made myself into a Trivial Pursuit question: ‘In 2011 what female singer flubbed the lyrics to the national anthem?’" she remembered.

The Matt, of course, is Matthew Rutler, her new boyfriend. She met him on the set of her film debut, the ill-fated "Burlesque," and soon after, announced her divorce from husband of five years, Jordan Brattman. To hear her tell the story, the split was mutual -- and mutually sinful.

“At one time or another,” Aguilera she said, alluding to affairs, "we were both not angels. It got to a point where our life at home was reminding me of my own childhood. I will not have my son grow up in a tension-filled home. I knew there would be a negative reaction in the press to my divorce, but I am not going to live my life because of something someone might say. That goes against everything I sing on my records. I have to be myself.”

And speaking of "Burlesque," in which she, for the first time, wasn't playing herself, she doesn't regret making the movie, even if it failed. Because she didn't.

“I was sad, but I’m still glad that I did the movie,” she said about the film. “During production, I was going through a lot of self-discovery. As a quote-unquote pop star, you have your entourage with you at all times. When you enter and leave a place, backstage, even at home—you always have your team. On the movie set, I didn’t have anyone around me. And it felt good. When I first met my husband, I needed that helping hand to take the reins and look after me. After the movie, I grew out of being that little girl: I became more of an adult.”

Now one of four judges on "The Voice," Aguilera is experiencing success once again. Good thing she spent all that time singing to "The Sound of Music" -- it not only trained that award winning voice, but helped her learn to fight through the tough times.

In fact, she just released a new song with "The Voice" co-judge, Cee Lo Green, titled, "Nasty." That being said, the real life nasty times may be over. At least for now.

Additionally, Aguilera launched a new perfume on Wednesday, the regal-sounding Royal Scent.

I just saw Burlesque and loved it. The critics who called this movie a failure are nuts. Cher and Christina A. are fantastic. The other actors were great too.

Anything with Cher is NOT a failure. But I guess by Hollywood standards, it was less than stellar. Considering everyone and everything is compared to the everything else...

If Bratman was so "mutually sinful", then why didn't we EVER see or hear about another woman in his life? Fact is, she is kind of a spoiled little tramp...who screwed around on her husband while filming Burlesque and then dumped his ass. LOL

Since then she is just a hard partying drunk, seen far too often in the tabloids. She has a beautiful voice if she could just stop all the silly warbling when she sings...but as a person, she doesn't seem like anyone to try to emulate in any way. : P

Are you mad? "ill-fated Burlesque"?

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&id=burlesque.htm

Grossing 90 million dollars is not a failure so get your facts straight. The movie has over 20 million dollars gross from DVD sales (no Blu-Ray sales are included) + more millions from sales in Europe, Australia and Japan.

It is one of the most successful musicals of the last years (everyone was expecting it to be the next Glitter or even Nine but they failed!).

I know you want to show that Christina had a bad year but Burlesque was not a failure and it's so frustrating when media try so hard to make it look like the biggest flop of her career. Look at the soundtrack's sales! It has sold 500,000 copies which is impressive for a soundtrack.

It got panned by the critics and only made about $89 million while it cost over $50 million to make--not a great profit margin.

Almost all musicals got panned by critics, that does not mean they are failures or flops. Besides, Burlesque was not a movie that critics would love, we knew that months before its theatrical release. It was meant to be cheesy, campy, full of cliches.

Only made $90 million? LOL that's huge for a musical! Actually, it is the 17th highest grossing musical in US, that's a lot for a "flop" movie.

Real flops are Glitter, Nine, Crossroads and other movies by pop stars.

Also, you seem to forget the gross from DVD/Blu-Ray sales (it has already grossed $20 million in US alone), rental sales, rights for TV etc.

To sum up, it's not a blockbuster movie but it is not a flop or failure either.

I'd like C.A.'s signing a lot better though if she would please please, o geeze please, stop stop stop with the runs all the time. Sing the dang song where I can understand the words your singing...all those runs makes it sound like a bunch of white noise.

Burlesque was so bad I turned the DVD off about mid-way thru - at that point I didn't care how it ended. I still like Christina Aguilera though and wish her much success.

We all know that Christina Aguilera indeed has a strong voice but she beats the listener over the head with her incessant over singing. I'd love to hear her sing without all the bells and whistles - just her amazing voice...pure, simple, beautiful.

I agree. When she tones it down which isn't often, you get a much better sense of the song and her authentic emotions. Her song, Beautiful is a good example. (Not sure at what point all of the vocal acrobatics became so prevalent... seems like it was around the time of Mariah Carey's debut—who is also a great singer when she's showing off less.)

Well said...Celine Dion is notorious for over vocalizing...ugh! IMO, you lose the essence of the song when the artist does that.

People need to stop comparing her to Mariah. As much as they may have similar ranges in their voices they do not share the same artistic integrity. What Christina has is the range of Mariah, the ability to dance nearly as well as her pop counterparts AND the kind of naturally inate creativity of Madonna, Bjork and dare I say Gaga.

Christina may be talented but creatively she could never be in the same league as Bjork.

Please define what determines a "Flop" movie. The movie did great and had multiple nominations! Please correct your error and encourage your writers to do more research than cruising PigHilton's posts.

How can BURLESQUE flops if the movie made 100 million worldwide (Theaters) and still top 10 in DVD sells till last week! (No counting Blu-Ray or DVD rental) Are you serious? Why journalist make up bullsh*t lately and try to bring down the few talented people that we have in the pop music of today! Always doing things the other way around you mediocre professionals MEDIOCRE! Ugh! Do you investigate before posting an article?

Burlesque FAILED????
BURLESQUE HAS MADE OVER $110 MILLION (Not counting international DVD/Blue Ray sales) It only took 50 Million to make so its already made more than enough profit.

IT RECEIVED 3 GOLDEN GLOBES NOMS, INCLUDING BEST MOVIE AND WINNING ONE.

The only thing thats FAILED is your writer at doing any type of research.
