Girl, 8, Killed In Hit And Run On Southwest Side

Chicago police are looking for the driver of a gray SUV that allegedly struck and killed an 8-year-old girl on the Southwest Side Tuesday afternoon.

Mariela Crisotomo had been riding her bicycle in the 3300 block of West 62nd Place, where she lived, when the vehicle struck her, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. According to a police spokesperson, she landed under a parked vehicle. She was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The vehicles sped off after striking the child.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Crisotomo will be remembered by her family and friends as a "bright, precocious girl." She dreamed of one day becoming a schoolteacher and was a third grader at Sawyer Elementary school. She is the youngest of three daughters.

Margarita Patino-Crisotomo, Mariela's mother, said told reporters was disappointed in police response to the accident, as officers did not arrive on the scene until 10 minutes after they were contacted, though the nearest police station is located only a block from where the collision took place.
