'Superman' Seeking Chicago Extras: Casting Calls Start This Saturday

Get Famous, One Frame At A Time: 'Superman' Needs Extras

Andy Warhol famously said, "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." Well, you've got a chance to get your first few seconds toward that 15 minutes, starting this weekend.

The new movie in the Superman franchise, "Superman: Man of Steel" is holding casting calls for extras starting on Saturday, June 18 in Naperville. Two more calls will be held the following week, including one in Chicago on June 25th.

“We're looking for all ages, all types,” casting assistant James McKay told Crain's Chicago Business. According to an announcement, though, they've particularly got their eyes out for “military/athletic types” and infant twins. Some extras, according to ABC-7, will be paid; others will only have the good fortune of seeing their face in a major blockbuster for a few fleeting moments.

The feature, which sports a budget of $175 million, is expected to look at Superman's origins, and Warner Bros. is hoping to relaunch the franchise much the same way "Batman Begins" brought new life to that series -- and, for that matter, "Casino Royale" revitalized James Bond with a darker mood and a new look at the hero's roots.

Plano, Illinois, a small town 60 miles west of Chicago, is expected to be the location for Smallville, Clark Kent's quaint, Midwestern childhood home. Crews will be filming there during the summer; shooting in downtown Chicago should begin around September.

Director Zack Snyder ("300," "Sucker Punch") has assembled an impressive cast thus far, including Henry Cavill in the title role, with Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, and Chicago's own Michael Shannon supporting. Russell Crowe is also apparently in talks to play Jor-El, Superman's Kryptonian biological father.

The movie is expected to hit theaters around Christmas of 2012, so it could be a long wait to see if your face gets past the cutting room and onto the silver screen.
