Medicaid Will No Longer Cover Hospital Mistakes

As of July next year, Medicaid won't cover preventable health problems or complications caused by hospital mistakes -- called "never events" -- that include operations on the wrong person or part of the body, certain infections from surgery and incorrect blood transfusions, according to a new government report.

"These steps will encourage health professionals and hospitals to reduce preventable infections, and eliminate serious medical errors," Donald Berwick, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told Kaiser Health News. The aim is to improve patient care, and bring down costs.
