Republican NY State Senator Roy McDonald's Awesome Defense Of Gay Marriage; Bloomberg Visits Albany

Republican New York State Senator Roy McDonald is one of the few Republicans who's said he will vote to legalize gay marriage in New York.

Reacting to pressure from the Conservative Party, anti-gay marriage groups, and religious leaders, McDonald gave a statement to the press which included a remarkable quote.

From The New York Daily News:

"You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn't black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing," McDonald, 64, told reporters.

"You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don't care what you think. I'm trying to do the right thing.

"I'm tired of Republican-Democrat politics. They can take the job and shove it. I come from a blue-collar background. I'm trying to do the right thing, and that's where I'm going with this."

McDonald's support for the gay marriage bill leaves it only one vote shy of having enough support to be made into law. Today, senate Republicans met behind closed doors and say they're undecided if they'll let the bill come to the floor.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg--an outspoken gay marriage advocate and the single biggest donor to New York Republican senators--visited Albany today to try to persuade a handful of undecided Republican senators to vote 'yes' on the historic measure. Bloomberg has publicly threatened to stop funding any Republican who doesn't vote for gay marriage.

Taken from the article "Bloomberg has publicly threatened to stop funding any Republican who doesn't vote for gay marriage." Wow...does that mean that, any politician who wishes to have a bill passed, would do anything and everything even to the extent of threats and coercion so his fellow republicans would do as he say?

I think the validity of the votes now. Wow...how could somebody sleep well at night after coercing and threatening fellow republicans just to make that vote. Apparently, there are those "hidden" benefactors or sponsors of the said bill also dictating behind the scenes.

What is going on with the world?

After reading, in Jeff Sharlett's C Street, about the Officer's Christian Fellowship (OCF), a fundamentalist group within the officer corp of the US military (at publication, 15,000 members at more than 80% of US military bases), this story comes as a welcome breath of fresh air.

In my wildest fever dreams I have often imagined a politician making such a statement. I just never thought it would come to fruition. And by an older Republican, no less! Proof of evolution right there. I'd love to think karma will come back to shine on Sen. McDonald, both personally and professionally.

That "blue-collar background" will disappear with the generation Roy MacDonald belongs to. His "F" quote has that proud New York attitude to ignore the "bull" and to do what's right,

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but finally a republican who is more concerned with doing the right thing than getting votes. I'm a cynic at heart, so I'm always looking for an ulterior motive when any republican does something I agree with, but this time I'll set that aside for a while and give him the benefit of the doubt. Even if the loss of Bloomberg's campaign contributions finally made him come around, it still took massive balls to go against your political party and vote for gay marriage in New York.

It might be nice to see a few Democrats willing to put their careers on the line as well.

You need to remember, Bloomberg "made" him...and if that is so, how much was his vote for?
