Vancouver Sun, Boston Globe & Other Newspaper Front Pages Day After Stanley Cup, Riots (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/16/11 05:18 PM ET   Updated: 08/16/11 06:12 AM ET

The Vancouver Sun, Boston Globe and newspapers throughout Canada are playing up the Stanley Cup big - not surprising given the teams involved and Canada narrowly missed its first championship since 1993.

The interesting part is how newspapers are treating the Vancouver riots the morning after and balancing that with the news of the sports result.

Browse through Canadian and Boston front pages below (thanks to Newseum) to see how they handled the big news and vote your favorite.

A positive thing coming from this is that it allowed some role reversal. On different news sites I've noticed some Americans morally denounce this at a level of smugness it took us Canadians years to prefect.

As a Vancouverite I can now feel what it's like to be branded by the actions of a few. Not that I think it was caused by a few anarchists (at least hundreds or thousands are responsible), but it stings to have to take on this responsibility by virtue or where you live.

I'm sincere when I say that it's a good lesson for Canadians.

I am really taken aback by some of the photoshopping in some of these. Is this common in modern print media? Seriously, I am curious. I am just stunned that a "fake" image would be run under a screaming headline. Regardless if that image is representative, it is still a "fake". I really and honestly had no idea.

Whenever I see White people riot, I want to slap them. What real problems do they have?

The same real problems that everyone of every color has ... d'oh.

You've been feeling the impact of institutional racism huh?
02:15 PM on 06/20/2011
Wow...and I just bet that you are a staunch anti-racism kinda person, right?

I think white people have real world issues, just like anyone else. Did the Vancouver riots reflect this? No. But that doesn't mean that it makes any sense to dismiss and entire people based on their skin color.

I'll dismiss them for completely ignoring their privilege.

I am reminded of the total contrast to these riots after a big soccer match a few years ago, in Italy.

We happened to be in Rome the day of a big match. The locals won, and they came swarming into the streets, all over town, singing and partying. They played with us tourists a little bit, but nothing hurtful or mean, more like joking around and trying to get us to join in. We decided to go along with the ride for a little while, since there was no damage being done, and everyone was very happy. The whole thing turned in to one of our most pleasant memories of Italy.

Glad I wasn't caught up in the violence in Vancouver, though. Not my kind of fun.

Huh? "The locals won" -- quite the contrast. There are WAY too many examples of soccer goofiness from all over the globe...I can't even imagine what point you are trying to make.

As close as I can tell, I could say, "This reminds me of the contrast of Blues Fest in downtown Chicago. Thousand of people flooded out, closing down major through ways in one of the largest cities in the world. And it was all based around having a good time and music. Completely different from Vancouver..."

What does that have to do with what went on in Vancouver? About as much as your story from what I can tell.

Los Angeles has riots after the basketball playoffs, even if the Lakers win. Imagine what would happen if they lost.

The Boston Globe cover is great except for the CHB's face being on it.

Both salubrious and lugubrious concurrently.

I do hope the Vancouver police are busy matching-up media shots of the riots with local highschool yearbooks, drivers license and college ID photos. Then knocking on peoples doors at 2am.

wrong, Vancouver is mostly full of white people who live there. What happened in Detroit, I know because I was born and raised there, was that white people came to our city and when the Tigers won the series rioted, acted a fool, then went home to the s while Detroit residence took the heat as always. At least know what you're talking about with your shot at Detroit. Detroit is 90% white, go look at the footage and who do you see burning police cars? Please don't get your facts twisted just to take a swipe at Detroit. Besides that was in 1984 not 2011 maybe it's time to let that one go.

A riot over sports....is a riot over sports. A rioter is a rioter. You seem more interested in demographics than I do.

Maybe they are modeling themselves after the soccer hooligans of Britain, instead?
