Cuba: Sea Levels To Rise More Than 30 Inches By 2100

Cuba Sea Rise Levels 2100 Climate Change

ar/pdo   06/17/11 03:09 PM ET   AP

HAVANA -- Cuban scientists calculate that median sea levels around the Caribbean nation will rise more than 30 inches by the end of the century due to global climate change, official media said Friday.

Models predict the sea will rise 10.6 inches (27 centimeters) by 2050, and 33.5 inches (85 centimeters) by 2100, Abel Centella, scientific director of the country's Meteorological Institute, was quoted by Communist Party daily Granma as saying.

There were no details of what preparations the island is undertaking, but Granma said scientists are closely monitoring sea levels.

Government scientist Marcelino Hernandez warned of the need to protect environments that can mitigate the effects of sea encroachment.

"Right now it is urgent to preserve mangroves, coral reefs, sea grass and sand beaches," Hernandez was quoted as saying. "Each of these ecosystems is a natural barrier to defend the coasts from the impact of climate change. If they deteriorate, the consequences will be worse."

International scientific studies have projected sea levels will rise between 30 and 75 inches (190 centimeters) by the end of the century, fed by melting glaciers and ice caps.

The rises will not be uniform worldwide due to currents, winds and other factors.

Communist Cuban scientists...sounds credible to me. It's not like they would falsely propogate an ideology that is detrimental to the U.S. economy. No politics, here. The Castro brothers love the United States...

Nonsense. Cuban scientists follow the same protocols and scientific processes as Chinese, Russian or US scientists. The scientific community is international.

Yes, as in of course. They are programs that steal from one person to give to another in order to buy votes Theft is theft regardless of legal legal codification that tries to hide the fact. The 2 commandments that are violated wholesale in this country are: Thou shalt not steal, and Thou shalt not covet.

"No one does more to spread dangerous disinformation about global warming than Murdoch. In a year of record heat waves in Africa, freak snowstorms in America and epic flooding in Pakistan, the Fox network continued to dismiss climate change as nothing but a conspiracy by liberal scientists and Big Government. Glenn Beck told viewers the Earth experienced no warming in the past decade -- the hottest on record. Sean Hannity declared that "global warming doesn't exist" and speculated about "the true agenda of global-warming hysterics." Even Brian Kilmeade, co-host of the chatty Fox & Friends, laughed off the threat of climate change, joking that the real problem was "too many polar bears.""

"Murdoch's entire media empire, it would seem, is set up to deny, deny, deny. The Wall Street Journal routinely dismisses climate change as "an apocalyptic scare," and Fox News helped gin up a fake controversy by relentlessly hyping the "climategate" scandal -- even though independent investigations showed that nothing in the e-mails stolen from British climate researchers undercut scientific conclusions about global warming."

"Murdoch knows better. In 2007, he warned that climate change "poses clear, catastrophic threats" and promised to turn News Corp. into a model of carbon neutrality. But at his media outlets, manufacturing doubt about global warming remains official policy. During the 2009 climate summit in Copenhagen, the Washington editor of Fox News ordered the network's journalists to never mention global warming "without immediately pointing out that such theories are based upon data that critics have called into question." Murdoch may be striving to go green in his office buildings, but on air, the only thing he's recycling are the lies of Big Coal and Big Oil." [Rolling Stone, 2/3/11]

Money only makes the world burn, not turn. Only the wealthy benefit from 'classes'. From the day we are born we are thrown into a game called capitalism, it's forced. Our choice in the matter? We do not have one. A lot of people are blind to this.

Living life, I find myself not needing all of these 'things' I have. My biggest fear? Being an old man looking back with nothing to show except a few material possessions (money). Society, somehow, convinces me that I need a lot of 'things' that aren't necessary and that I should work my life away to obtain them... when in actuality I only need love, shelter, a means for food, and family.

The corporate machine holds us as slaves and hopes we'll never notice; that we'll continue to live like robots with the false hope of getting rich. Success is measured in $$$ and not happiness.

It's a vicious cycle and the end is near, or at least I hope it is. The truth is true, and it is that the lives we live are not sustainable. The earth has given us life, and in return we spit in its metaphorical face!

The cake is a lie.

Capital dissects and bisects our lives, commodifying everything it touches, including our very bodies. It has no instrinsic value, and only becomes "real" through the process of reification. Thus, endless sameness becomes difference, while ontological difference slips into homogeneity. Capital demands the insane logic of reason reduced to mere measure. It is schi/zoid, paranoid, and utterly subsumed by its own skin, which reflects, like the queen's magic mirror, what we want to see, not what is.

I have to say you are spot on sir. The corporate masters peddle this false hope that everyone can be rich if they only try hard. However plain facts are that for capitalism to be "capitalism" there MUST be rich and there more importantly MUST be poor people (for them to be rich in comparison to as well as to work to make them rich). There is no avoiding this fact that the entire system depends on there being a large amount of poor people compared to a small number of wealthy people (if we all had equal wealth it'd be socialism right??).

And now we sit around arguing about ways to "grow the economy" and put people to work to earn money to spend, as if there is a mythical pile of money out there someone doesn't already have claim to.

GLADoS is Still Alive.

Yet another lame, blatant attempt at trough-snouting by an impoverished nation wanting to get aboard the IPCC-led gravy train and demand their latest tranche of guilt-cash from the so-called 'developed nations'.

It has been proven by many decades of real-world observations that sea level rise has decelerated from minimal to insignificant, and the world has entered a cooling phase.

This sort of postulation is so tired and over-worked that only the most ardent accolytes of the CAGW doctrine will suck it in. And suck it in they will, with relish.

Give it a rest.

What is Known about Climate Change

Science has made enormous progress toward understanding climate change. As a result, there is a strong, credible body of evidence, based on multiple lines of research, documenting that Earth is warming. Strong evidence also indicates that recent warming is largely caused by human activities, especially the release of greenhouse gases through the burning of fossil fuels.

Global warming is closely associated with other climate changes and impacts, including rising sea levels, increases in intense rainfall events, decreases in snow cover and sea ice, more frequent and intense heat waves, increases in wildfires, longer growing seasons, and ocean acidification. Individually and collectively, these changes pose risks for a wide range of human and environmental systems. While much remains to be learned, the core phenomenon, scientific questions, and hypotheses have been examined thoroughly and have stood firm in the face of serious scientific debate and careful evaluation of alternative explanations.

Those points are:
Al Gore
scientists fudged the data
climatology is a scam
all of climatology is a religion
those who understand the science are all believers of this scam religion

Here, the OcotilloKid manages to get in about three of those standards. No other content. Nothing of the science of it. Just Big Oil talking points.

This is AWESOME. Not to mention it is proof that the Climate Change debate is over and the Global Warmongers have lost to REAL science.

All Global Warmonger science has been proven wrong by advanced satellite data. Real live scientists in the US can no longer support the ridiculous ramblings of the Church of Climatology. They really really want to because their grant funding depends on it. But unfortunately, all that pesky REAL LIFE DATA just says that CO2 isn't going to destroy the planet.

The fact that we are seeing pathetic stories from third rate scientists from backwater nations who have ZERO technical capabilites only goes to prove how little is left to the 'arrrrrgghhhh we're all gonna die because of CO2' movement.

A bunch of cuban scientists with 1982 IBM PCs have calculated with any level of accuracy that sea levels will rise????????????

Not a SINGLE prediction the Church of Climatology has made over the last 20 years has come to pass.

Not One.

You folks are have a ZERO prediction rate. Not a SINGLE thing you have ever said about climate has come to pass. NOTHING. You've had 20 YEARS. 1/5 of a Century. You should have gotten SOMETHING right. But instead you have NOTHING right.

That 'science'.

Science is about using a 'method' to tease the 'truth' out of complex issues.

You folks have abused the 'method' to demand an 'outcome' from a set of data that is unrelated to science or the truth.

It was only a matter of time before you folks started putting all your eggs into the commie dictatator basket. Cuba's politics are RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY.

I have no problem with the scientists. It is the political machines that are using this "crisis" as ammunition to fight each other. It is the profit takers that sell the word "Green" with zero benefit to the environment.
We need to wean ourselves off of our addiction to fossil fuels 40 years ago.
This is not going to happen politically. Politicians only want to be elected or re-elected and find new ways to apply hidden taxes on the lower and middle class. Neither party is for the "common folk." Both parties are for "we are in control of the money." Both parties are the "Party of NO."

Just because Cuba is communist does not meant they do not have wily scientists who can model how much coastal damage will come to Cuba in X years in the future and therefore calculate how many free allotments of carbon credits Cuba gets now as a "disadvantaged developing economy" to fish for dollars and Euros in international carbon exchanges. All UN authenticated carbon credits, naturally.

If they had no shame at all the Cubans could rightfully blame their marxist-leninist kleptocracy for a lack of development of industry, thereby producing less GHGs and deserving huge more and new allotments of free carbon credits. Yes, the wonkies will argue "that's additionality", but the "additionality" problem is only one for economists who actually believe in cap and trade, and don't understand the scam.

Of course the correct people to blame for Cuban lack of development are the US, who contine to blockade an impoverished country after almost 50 years, and actively prevent it's development. All because the Cuban's took back their Government from the American supported dictatorship.

In the meantime, on some measures they still do better than the US. In particular their health outcomes are better than the US.

In the meantime, their scientists are making predictions that are completely in accord with American scientists predictions. So at least science continues without the taint of dark ages political ideology that maintains the blockade.

I am so sick of the "by 2100" caveat as if everything will be normal and suddenly all hell breaks loose.
We will be feeling the effects of sea level rise well before 2100... just like we are seeing drought followed by torrential rains and floods now.

Of course the scientists must shout at the top of their collective lungs that we can't pin any of that on climate change. Forget that we're seeing 100 year floods every other year... nothing happening here, move along
http://growthisnotsustainable.blogspot.com/2011/06/link-between-climate-change-and-joplin.html
04:01 PM on 06/19/2011
"I am so sick of the "by 2100" caveat"

Let me explain. 2050 and 2100 are Kyoto treaty target datum levels. That is why you will see those exact years a lot in these stories. The other numbers that you will also see are percentages, percentage numbers of GHG emissions by a certain year. "Denmark agrees to new cuts to 33% by Year X" and such headlines.

The years and percentage numbers (and others) are vital data for accountants and the like to calculate and predict the value of present and future carbon offsets. Here the Cubans need not offer percentage cuts because they are a developing country.

When you see articles saying European country X agrees to new higher cuts, that signals that carbon credits need to be propped up. The European carbon exchanges has already collapsed in its short life. The Cubans better hurry!
