The Daily made a big hire Friday, scooping up Variety’s Tom Lowry as the tablet publication’s new business editor.

Daily editor-in-chief Jesse Angelo announced the hire Friday in a memo to staff obtained by The Huffington Post.

Folks,

I'm happy to announce that Tom Lowry is joining The Daily as our Business Editor. Tom comes to us from Variety, where he was a senior editor, and BusinessWeek before that. He is an excellent journalist and a great guy and we're thrilled to have him aboard. Please give him a warm welcome when he starts July 1.

Jesse

There’s been much discussion in the media world about the half-dozen or so departures at the publication since News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch first showed it off to reporters this past February. The Huffington Post recently reported that art director Gabriel Dance was the latest to leave. So the Lowry hire is good news for the four-month-old start-up.

The Daily, which hopes to build a national audience, has always had its sights set beyond the Manhattan media fishbowl. Earlier this week, the publication announced it was “expanding” and seeking journalists from around the country, not just those located in New York City.

If the Monopoly game were redesigned to be relevant today, would Media Megalomania and Murdoch, MMM, be a goal or take you to jail after you again pass GO?

Thanks for this article. I did not know The Daily was a Murdoch rag, although the tone of some of the articles made me suspicious. I've now deleted it from my iPad.

The motto of the NEWS CORP is: "we make the news". If you are a large corporation that wants to spin a story in your favor, call Rupert. For a price, he will deliver millions of viewers that agree with your point of view even if doing so is against their best interests. What an amazing business model.

And then there is the digital revolution in general, taking its toll on the old media,
Murdoch's empire included. That's the fun of that: http://tinyurl.com/6hf8277

1. There is a pie fight going on about real news v. made up stuff
2. Is there a difference between how individual TV media companies sanction their employees when they go over the top?
3. Should there be a standard applied to reporters, etc, when they goes over the top?
4. What constitutes lying. Is that different from distorting the facts?

You can fight among yourself, but if you won't/can't agree on a "how to judge" and "what constitutes a lie v. distortion of facts, then this is nothing more than a Pie fight.

I've read the Daily for two weeks until my free trial ran out. I liked it, and I didn't see any obvious biases outside of the editorial page (which did skew right). But I just cannot bring myself to voluntarily give money to Rupert Murdoch, so I won't subscribe. I probably would subscribe, though, if it were owned by almost anyone else.

There would be no free press in the United States without C-SPAN and FoxNews. Our TV network news operations have become parrots for the Obama administration.
