Obama Weekly Address: President Talks Fatherhood, Coaching Daughter's Basketball Team (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/18/11 12:00 PM ET Updated: 08/18/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says being a dad is sometimes his hardest job, but also the most rewarding.

Just ahead of Father's Day, the president devoted his Saturday radio and Internet address to fatherhood. He talked about growing up without a dad, his own failings as a father and the values he hopes to teach his daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, 10.

He described the responsibilities that all fathers have to their children and said his administration is trying to help during tough economic times and long deployments for U.S. troops.

The president spoke of helping to coach Sasha's basketball team. "In the end, that's what being a parent is all about – those precious moments with our children that fill us with pride and excitement for their future; the chances we have to set an example or offer a piece of advice; the opportunities to just be there and show them that we love them."

Obama, who was raised largely by his grandparents in Hawaii after his father left when Obama was very young, also talked about what he wishes he'd done differently.

"I felt his absence. And I wonder what my life would have been like had he been a greater presence," the president said.

"That's why I've tried so hard to be a good dad for my own children. I haven't always succeeded, of course – in the past, my job has kept me away from home more often than I liked, and the burden of raising two young girls would sometimes fall too heavily on Michelle."

The president said he's learned that what children need most is their parents' time and a structure that instills self-discipline and responsibility, noting that even in the White House, Malia and Sasha do their chores and walk the dog. "Above all, children need our unconditional love," the president said, "whether they succeed or make mistakes; when life is easy and when life is tough."

Republicans used their weekly address to call for progress on pacts to expand trade with South Korea, Panama and Colombia.

The Obama administration wants lawmakers to expand retraining assistance for American workers who lose their jobs because of foreign competition. Republicans say that issue should be addressed separately by the president.

"For the good of our economy – and our country – he needs to send these free (trade) agreements to the U.S.Senate for approval now, so that U.S. workers and businesses can begin to realize their benefits," said Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D.

"Our country needs the kind of pro-jobs, pro-growth policies that will help us live up to our vision of a strong, peaceful, prosperous America," Hoeven said. "We have an opportunity right now to advance that vision and jumpstart the nation's economy. Robust international trade can help us do it."

Being president is like being a parent, you have to put all you have in it and want to do it. Being a parent you realize that you will never beable to please your children all the time and you have to make the decision to do the right thing. Being president make you realize that you will not be able to please all the grown up children all the time and again you have to make the decision to do the right thing.

You realize that no matter what you do someone will always find something wrong with it and never anything good until years later. Children think fathers should make quick decision and worry about the future later and grown up children thinks president should make quick decisions for a short term goal and worry about the long term goal later.

The president message was a good one and speaking from the heart, too bad a lot of those socall christians cannot get the message and realize that the president is after all human and have feelings just like everyone else.

Being president today is not like in the past, today everyone want the president to jump when they say jump and move when they say move or get to the back of the bus. Not happen anymore. Get use to it, changes are happen and you can't stop.

One of President Obama's best qualities is his flexibility and sharp response to the needs of every American. He really listens and adjusts accordingly. I have never witnessed such a hands-on domestically concerned president in the Oval Office. He doesn't get everything he wants done but he genuinely responds. Amazing!

One of the first things I noted about President Obama was how children from infants on up instantly trust him. It is a great shame that the Republicans have made such a campaign of demented hatred against him. I salute the President for the kind father he is to his children and the honest effort he puts into his job. God bless you, sir.

Mr. President you may be a good father to your children but you are not a good leader to your Country. You say one thing then do another. Is that the way you raise your girls. I am tired of being told that you will work to get jobs for the people in this country and you never talk about it any more. You just tell us that the economy is going to be bad for a while longer. you do not tell us what you intend to do about it. You tell us that you will not allow Medicare to be changed yet Vice President Biden talks like Medicare will be changed in the new budget. how will it be changed Mr. President. Bohener says there will be no tax increases yet you are quiert about his remark. Will you increase the taxes on the rich or will the republicans once again get their way?
I am not interestedin how good a father you are I am interested in when you are going to produce jobs for the unemployed. They wuld like to be good fathers also but itis hard to do when you do not have a job. a house or food to put on the table.

Just what are you doing about it? You may find it hard to get a good job but the truth is freely had The financial collapse resulted from policies of .so called conservatives in the 80s. The President has no magic wand to create a job for you' I hope you are as fervent in berating the Republicans who do everything possible to hobble a recovery.

It is too bad it is an election year. He would probably be able to accomplish so much more. Too much competitive stonewalling of what he hopes to accomplish, Bless your heart.

I don't think I'd want him coaching a sports team with his ideological leanings. No winning desired.

Just think, President Obama-there's a chance that if your father were there while you were growing up, you might not be POTUS today!
Not to say that something bad could have happened, but your life could have taken a different course...

I'm not impressed. He should be talking about the nation's problems and not exploiting his daughters. Campaigning, that's what it is.
08:22 PM on 06/18/2011
It is campaigning.
It is also arrogant.
Who is he to tell others how to raise their children?
And if he would stop ki//ing other people's children in other countries, he might have a teeny bit more credibility.

This was a key reason I believed Obama would be the better president. He came from a background of something other than privilege. He is raising two young children, and I believed for his children's sakes he saw the future as something he could help mold for his children. Instead he came up against the reality of political gridlock, extremists from both left and right, and an economy flattened by years of irresponsible leadership. The very fact he sees fatherhood as key to his identity heartens me and reaffirms he is the man for 2012.

Oh, how cute.

Watch out now, for those sharks circling over there in the Congress - your "man for 2012" is about to wilt and sell us down the river again, the moment those scary guys show there teeth. Kiss your Medicaid and Social Security good-bye...

Unless he has a Democrat run against him, he is the incumbant (Democrat) against a Republican who will most definitely take Medicare and SS to privatized status, thus essentially eliminated it for the vast majority. In so far as the Medicaid program, Republican governors are already looking to dismantle it. The tea party is falling from favor, are dangerous to the core American ethics of "We the People", and the Libertarian would sell America down the river and repackage it as a derivitive in the name of free market capitalism. Despite the "how cute", political reality still exists and Obama still is the best option.

"He talked about growing up without a dad, his own failings as a father and the values he hopes to teach his daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, 10."

Enough with all the personal stuff. Look at his transcripts and you'll see his favorite words are "I" and "me". "My government." "My administration." I'm tired of hearing how he reacts to things, about how issues affect him.

There are 320 million Americans out here, and many are suffering from unemployment, foreclosures, crimped wages, depleted retirement accounts. You have a wonderful family, Mr. President, but please, focus on the people.

Amen to that my friend. Everytime I hear barry speak, I hear Toby Keith's song playing in my head! "I Wanna talk About Me"
Actually if Americans were allowed to view his transcripts, they might be surprised with what they found. Maybe he really didn't attend Harvard Law for being so intelligent.
Since we know so much about Palin's, McCain's, and Bush's college grades and education.......why not b. hussein's too?

What we do know about President Obama's years as a Harvard Law School student is that he graduated Magna Cum Laude and that he was president of the Harvard Law Review. You may make negative assumptions (based on no evidence) about why he was admitted, but you cannot say that it was a mistake to have admitted him - he excelled.
