Jon Stewart LIVE On Fox News, Tells Host 'You're Insane' (VIDEO) [UPDATE]

First Posted: 06/19/11 01:02 PM ET Updated: 08/19/11 06:12 AM ET

[UPDATE] - Stewart slammed Fox News on Monday night's episode of 'The Daily Show' for editing his interview with Wallace. Watch the clip here.

[ORIGINAL STORY] - The Daily Show's Jon Stewart entered the proverbial lion's den, appearing live on Fox News Sunday to debate "media bias" with host Chris Wallace.

Early in the interview, Wallace flashed a previous quote of Stewart's calling Fox News a "relentless agenda-driven 24 hour news opinion propaganda delivery system," and asked Stewart, "Where do you come up with this stuff?"

Stewart responded, "Uh, it's actually quite easy."

Later, when Wallace argued that a clip about Sarah Palin from the Daily Show was political commentary, Stewart told Wallace, "You're insane... Here's the difference between you and I. I'm a comedian first. My comedy is informed by an ideological background, there's no question about that. But the thing that you will never understand...is that Hollywood, yeah, they're liberal, but that's not their primary motivating force. I'm not an activist. I am a comedian."

"Do I want my voice heard?" Stewart continued later. "Absolutely, that's why I got into comedy. Am I an activist, in your mind? A partisan ideological activist?" Wallace responded, "Yeah." "Okay, then I disagree with you," Stewart said. "You can't understand, because of the world that you live in, that there is not a designed ideological agenda on my part to affect partisan change because that's the soup you swim in. And I appreciate that, I understand it. It reminds me of in ideological regimes, they can't understand that there is free media other places because they receive marching orders."

However, it was in a later exchange that Stewart got actually angry at Wallace, as he talked about what he called the misinformation that Fox News gave its viewers.

"The embarrassment is that I'm given credibility in this world because of the disappointment that the public has in what the news media does," he said.

"I don't think our viewers are the least bit disappointed with us," Wallace said. "I think our viewers think, finally, they're getting somebody who tells the other side of the story."

"Who are the most consistently misinformed media viewers?" Stewart shot back, his voice rising. "The most consistently misinformed? Fox, Fox viewers, consistently, every poll."

I love how Foxbot hosts ask whomever they interview (that they perceive as liberal), "when was the last time you voted republican," or "have you ever voted republican?" How much more blatant can they be for their "blind-ideology for dummies" audience?: "Don't take anything this lib/socialist/communist has to say seriously, because look, he won't even vote right."

I don't think Stewart was really doing an Amos and Andy voice. His voice changed but it was just to tell a joke and it didn't sound black. I think he was just trying to be funny. It is kind of funny to say you aren't gonna have bills longer than 3 pages.

Chris Wallace got away with a FALSE smear of Diane Sawyer’s reporting, and nobody called him on it. In fact it turned out HE bungled his reporting as he tried to smear hers: http://foxnewsproblems.wordpress.com/2011/06/20/hello-world/
I wish somebody would have reported this.

Watch how Jon Stewart glides out of that "Amos and Andy" accusation. Don't let Stewart's street cred persona fool ya. The man cuts a rug as smooth as Fred Astaire.

Too bad everyone is glazing over the context of what Jon Stewart is mocking. Apparently nobody cares that a presidential candidate wants to keep bills at a maximum length of 3 pages. Is he lazy? Does he not like to read?? What's wrong with this Herman Cain guy??

wow, almost 30,000 comments! Let me guess; about 15000 left, about 15000 right?

That's correct people, you have two choices. Black or white. Up or down. Right or left. On or off.

WAKE UP. 300000 time wastin' bickering ladies. Live your life in FULL COLOR, not white or black.

I'm not exactly sure what your point is. You seem to be acknowledging the possibility of more than just diametrically opposed opinions. Reasonable people already know this. Why do you assume everyone just accepts what is spoon fed to them by the media they watch, regardless of the political bent it comes from?

Just this week, jon stwart mocked Howard Cain, using an Amos & Andy voice ... it a Conservative did that everyone would be up and yelling Racist. I suppose it's okay for someone on the Left to be a Racist. The Left is Racist..using government entitlements to keep Blacks dependent on the government and to keep Blacks down. The Left is a mod mentality of pathetic losers that need to close down the debate because they have no solutions and no ideas.

People who complain about black people getting money from the government are the same people who like to forget how many poor white people in the south and midwest live off of welfare checks.

I don't disagree with your point but might wanna do some research on the welfare assistance to southern states. There aren't a lot of them of the top of the list. For example California has over a 3% assistance rate which is much higher than other states. Its alot of states on both coasts. But I get your point and it shouldn't be a racial issue.

I think the headline of this article highlights EXACTLY Jon's most basic statement - News of ALL stripes has decided to concern itself with the sensationalistic over content. I know we live in a millisecond-attention-span world, but call all fouls, no matter who threw the jab to the ribs.

While being as liberal as possible to imagine, I can't imagine that Jon will be well served by the inability to constrain anger in his endeavours to prune the more obdurate branches of the conservative cork oak, in spite of the successful usage of such motivations from Voltaire through Lenny Bruce up to Lewis Black. Anger may incise; better to allow the tree to grow and find folly and reason the profit from its misshapen umbra.

Jon Stewart is such an excellent debater -- I think the reason he's been given more respect as an outlet of political rhetoric more than with which he is comfortable (and he's said this numerous times) is that people in general are extremely frustrated with the lack of substance present in "real" news reporting. The problem isn't that Jon Stewart is too politically active as a comedian -- it's that people who are charged with reporting news are instead deferring their coverage to entertainment, and that they'd rather sacrifice journalistic integrity than reconsider their 24 hour news cycles.

I must correct Jon Stewart on one point (though what he said may not have been false, just not the whole truth). His position in the world existed LONG before Mark Twain or Will Rogers. Often times, the jesters in Shakespearian plays were the smartest characters of them all. The comedians have always been taken more seriously than the serious members of society, which are made a joke of.

I don't think he was suggesting that those people where the first political satirists. He was using those two people as examples that are relevant to the American experience.

Did Wallace have to trade in his sense of humor to work for Fox News? Sad, really.

I love Jon's response to this article.. But even better was the part of the interview edited out that had Wallace admitting that FOX is essentially right-leaning(a fact we all know but FOX is still in denial about). Still this huge cry-baby myth about all news being slanted to the left*.

Now I say that with an asterisk because I 100% believe in the joking that Stewart continued on with. That it SEEMS like a lot of media outlets are left-leaning because they stand for facts, social justice, equality, etc. Things that the worst of the Republican party loathes. Your average Republican Joe isn't evil. He may be misinformed because of outlets like FOX News... but make no mistake, the men behind the curtains of the party are greedy, arrogant, conniving shadows of what a person should be.
