School Lunch

latimes.com:

Fewer than 1 in 5 of the children who relied on free or reduced-price lunches during the 2009-2010 school year in California received subsidized meals last July, according to a new report.

That represents a 15 percent drop in participation in summer meals programs from the year before at a time when enrollment in other federal nutrition programs is increasing because of the lingering effects of the recession.

One way to deal with cuts is for schools to stop pushing free/reduced lunch applications on people who don't want to apply. The Feds tie so much to eligibility that districts want as many eligible as possible.

What a wonderful country we live in. We carry on three costly wars, give tax breaks to billionaires, entitlements to oil companies and agriculture millionaires and cut food subsidies to poor kids. We are the greatest country on the earth!!!!

Wayne,
You can have a state that grossly overpays public employees, has regulatory comisions with thousands of paid members, has a university system that's grossly overpaid from the trustees to the full time faculty (and has a lot of ridiculous major fields) or you can have some worthwhile programs helping folks in need. But,you can't have both.
I'm surprise you haven't figured it out for yourself yet
Corwin.Just a really Smart person who's trying to help
By the way,Wayne. There's nothing that stops you from personal giving ,is there?

It's according to Heinlein,not "Heinrich".
As you know (Well, this is HuffPo.You probably don't.) ,Heinlein wrote extensively of what happened when the 'creative ferment of societies ' abandoned them.He was particularly hard on Education majors, but really spared no one. I have to think he'd be trying to see this both as a learning lesson and a slow motion train .
By the way Wayne.Check ? Mail?

Cue the violin-laden sad theme, please: "That reduced the places where needy students received breakfasts, lunches and snacks during the summer months. The 'summer nutrition gap' jeopardizes the health and academic success of about 2 million low-income children in California [...]." No wonder educators are producing such academic under-achievers, they're too busy running taxpayer-supported restaurants and snack bars. Also, since when did self-entitled reproduction suddenly come without the responsibility to clothe and to feed?
02:04 AM on 06/20/2011
Maybe their parents should feed them?

Summer nutrition programs are extremely important for children, but I don't understand how the headline coincides with the numbers in the article.

The headline states that fewer children will participate due to budget cuts, but the article I read counts the numbers of sites available to serve meals as: 95 in 2009, 260 in 2010, and 300 this summer in 2011. The number of sites are going up, not down. Doesn't that mean more children will be served?

Students may not participate for a number of reasons, such as they've moved, they are not in the local area during summer, for transportation problems, or other reasons. Not only students in summer programs are eligible--any student who qualified for free-reduced meals during the year still qualify in the summer, but the parents have to get them there.

It sure would be a tragedy to increase taxes on the wealthiest to feed those children. Those kids might grow up to be voting progressives.
02:54 PM on 06/19/2011
It's unfortunate these parents can't feed their own children. The government needs to step-in if these parents are indeed unfit.

I bet the parents have cell phones, tvs, etc. or are here illegally....if the kids want to eat at the schools, some of which are in shambles and filthy, let their parents "volunteer" to clean up or maintain the school grounds....

Here's a thought. So many of the ,um Smart people are leaving California..For Free! You guys aren't even trying to stop them. Now what about making them ransom their kids. it worked in Russia. It worked in Cuba. This is a much better plan than some ridiculous fantasy like asking HuffPo readers to contribute.
