Black MacBook Air Laptops To Be Released: RUMOR

Black Macbook Air

As Apple readies a refresh of the MacBook Air line of ultraportable laptops, which will allegedly be powered by Intel's Sandy Bridge platform and possibly launching in June, a new rumor has cropped up that suggests Apple will release different color models this time around.

MacRumors, citing "several anonymous tips," reports that some next-gen MacBook Air units will be available in a black finish, in addition to the standard aluminum finish.

"The most specific of the claims suggests that a black anodized aluminum case would be available on a top-end MacBook Air model, in much the same way as Apple once offered a high-end black MacBook on top of the standard white offerings," writes MacRumors.

9 to 5 Mac has published details on the specs users could expect to see, writing, "We've also received an anonymous tip with a similar Lion/Sandy Bridge/Thunderbolt/Next few weeks release information. That tip also said a $899 starting price point."

But users should treat the color rumors with some measure of skepticism: 9 to 5 Mac also wrote that another source contacted them to say "they haven't seen any Black in the new MacBook Air materials."

What do you think? Will there be a black option available when the new MacBook Airs finally launch?

Is the MacBook dead? Despite its success, the next generation MacBook Air could be the beginning of the end for the MacBook. Many overlapping factors between the two laptops suggest it is.

What about that hideous bezel? Apple can do better than that.

I bought the first generation Air early last year and have yet to find a reason to complain about it, let alone think of getting a new one. I learned long ago, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. If it still works, don't replace it.

The $899 starting price for a new MacBook Air is much more exciting than the possibility that it may come in black.

for all the sarcastic posts commenting here about how a black laptop is not "revolutionary" or anything new--no one is saying it is. the story is simply saying apple may be offering the macbook air in black, that's all.

Then the point here is, why is this newsworthy? Why doesn't huffingtonpost have an article for every laptop that offered a new color variation? Doesn't that smack of bias?
02:33 PM on 06/22/2011
it's newsworthy because it's apple. people want to read about it, apple is trendy right now. it's a post on a tech blog, this isn't the front page of the ny times. no one wants to hear that dell is coming out with a black laptop because no one cares about dell's design aspects. let's get real.

Wow, kewel, a different color ... black! What will they think of next? Clever, very clever.
I've had my aluminum-finished one for about 8 months now, so it's getting kind of old and boring. Now that there's a good reason to upgrade, I can justify the expense. I hope mom and dad agree.

That is quite funny.

I was just wishing (while cursing at Steve Jobs) that Apple would go back to a dark or non-reflective laptop as I was trying to use my MacBook outside today. I was thwarted as aluminum case reflected so much light as to make it very difficult to see the screen. It is another all too common case of Steve Jobs putting looks before function.

What won't Apple do to con people into getting new technology, only to improve it once the mania dies down.....

Yeah, the old "Offer The Customer Options" scam, followed by the "Keep Working To Improve Your Product Line" ruse.
Insidious.

Just as innovative as the iPad 2!

You know, things like this (and the white iPhone and grumbling about the loss of a glowing keyboard) get huge hits and apple users wonder why they are often thought of as regarding  of their computers more as fashion statements than tools.

Again, Apple is too disciplined about product calendars to release an Air replacement in less than a year after the original.  That causes too much feeling among the first-week-buyers that they are being exploited.  Also they will wait until well after Lion has full retail availability.

On the other hand that the next Air will be sandy bridge and include thunderbolt and possibly USB3 is accurate.  It will most likely have a larger SSD but not a lower starting price
