BeautifulPeople.com Invaded By 30,000 Uglies

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/20/2011 9:52 am Updated: 10/29/2011 11:07 am

Today in fact or fiction: BeautifulPeople.com, a dating website so vain it probably thinks this article's about it (and it is!), was briefly invaded by 30,000 "ugly" people who were granted membership thanks to a Shrek virus, likely planted by a reject.

Typically, BeautifulPeople.com hopefuls submit photographs to the site, which are then voted on by its 700,000 existing members. However, Greg Hodge, managing director of BeautifulPeople.com, said in a press release, "We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting." The unattractive additions (including 11,924 Americans) were cast off the "island," as Hodge calls it, and a hotline was set up to handle any hurt feelings.

Hodge explained to The Huffington Post, "Communities need to be exclusive to serve the purpose of the community. Exclusion is prevalent all through society. Look at Mensa and the national football team; all go through a selection process, some are accepted some are not. BeautifulPeople is no different aside from the fact that our process is democratic. There are some sites out there where you have to be a certain religion or color. BeautifulPeople is open to every race, color, creed and religion and represents every ethnicity, the proviso being our members find you beautiful."

He added, "If Mensa's database was mistakenly flooded with 30,000 dummies, they would not start putting out easier IQ tests!"

So what makes for a perfect BeautifulPeople.com member? Hodge told us, "Men will vote on women based solely on how they look...surprise, surprise. Women look at the bigger overall picture; yes, the men have to be attractive but they also have to write a reasonably articulate profile description, show a little character or sense of humor. A high income also helps as does a picture showing a good lifestyle."

We were pretty wary of this too-good-to-be-true scoop, so BeautifulPeople put us in touch with Asia, 39, who remarked to HuffPost, "Because looks are important to me in a partner, I want to belong to a website where every profile I search through is attractive.

"

When asked what message she had for those who were rejected, she said, "
Bye bye! No, seriously, I would say don't take it too hard. I'm a makeup artist working in the beauty business in L.A! I see rejection all the time. Everyone has their strengths. You have to pick yourself up and get on with real life."

One of the women trying to do so is Kate, 32, also from L.A. (Full disclosure: we received her name from BeautifulPeople's PR, but she sounded genuinely upset.) Her friends had encouraged her to join the site for some time and she was let through around May 19 or 20, thanks to the Shrek virus. She told HuffPost that her stint as a member "was fun. I made some friends in the forum and got a few nice messages. And suddenly I received an e-mail reading, 'Sorry to inform you, you're not beautiful enough,' with a support number to call."

Kate said she called the hotline and the woman gave her tips about how to rejoin, like what types of pictures to post and "sometimes a little sex appeal doesn't hurt."

Although she said the experience was humiliating and definitely a blow to her ego, Kate might try to rejoin in a couple of weeks: "I'd like to be on the site. I work a lot and I don't get out and about meeting people too often, so I think it would be good."

She did admit, "BeautifulPeople is kind of silly and shallow. But instead of just joining Match.com or eHarmony, at least you know all of the people are going to be generally attractive."

And that's what matters most.

I'm no fan of this site but a lot of people here are eqauating good looks with low intelligence, and that makes you just as shallow and ignorant as the people on that site.

My mother is a beautiful attorney with an engineering and law degree. It happens, don't be so naive people.

Can't get much more shallow than this.

How incredibly shallow. You must submit a photo to be 'part of the club'.

Here's where America's youth get the idea that, unless they come out of the womb looking like a beauty queen, they're not wanted.

my vote for 'worst .com in the world"

I nominate BeautifulPeople.com for a Darwin award. They can all hook-up and have babies with the same piss poor values they deem important. And as time goes on, and evolution works its magic, they will be like some beautiful breed of dog that runs infront of cars, saving us all from spreading their shallow genes.

Please stick together shallow people, so that we can eventually weed you out of the human race. There is nothing wrong with being pretty, but making it a priority is silly.

I encourage these people to stay away from the genral population and date eachother.

Beautiful People ?!?! I gotta see this. I am a Nashville Musician/Writer. About 10:30 or 11:00 PM everyone becomes a beautifiul people. Also great dancers and bulletproof. "Hey Dude, get off of my amp". -Richard Stickney

Well, all they need to do is change the domain name to shallow.com and they'll most likely get left alone by hackers.

One question: how do the people who run Beautifulpeople.com even know the photos they are judging are of the person who is trying to join? Could be a lot of "uglies" are already using the site.

Why in the world would anyone with a modicum of intelligence want to join such a site? I say it's great that these yahoos have their own site - keeps them away from the rest of us.

Ask any man what he truly values in a woman. Men by nature are drawn to look at eye candy, but what they want in a partner is not superficiality, but a genuinely kind and loving person.

Since you have to be voted on to get in, isn't really just a social club subject to the standards of the original members?

I don't see the MENSA analogy. To be admitted to MENSA, you have to score at a certain level on an objective battery of test. If your score qualifies, you're in. It's not subject to the discretions of the existing membership. Though, considering that the founders of the beautifulpeople site are probably not members of MENSA, I understand their confusion;)

Gifted children are often bullied or ostracized from their peer age groups, organizations like MENSA are perhaps an outlet for them once they reach adulthood, although you don't have to be of age to join, technically. Scoring high on something like the CCAT for example in Canada, which is administered to elementary students is qualification.

From personal experience, joining in an enrichment program let me find peers who were interested in the same things I was. Kind of hard to find when you're an 8 year old interested in national politics and the machinations of the parliamentary system for example.

Mens means mind in latin. Mensa means table in latin. The organization takes both words with both meanings to derive their objective meaning of a round table of minds.

You have to test in the top 2% on a recognized IQ test to qualify.

Okay. They have every right to worship each others looks on this website. I happen to know first hand that there are plenty of people who are beautiful on the outside and extremely ugly internally. If I had a choice I'd choose ugly on the outside and beautiful on the inside for people I want to associate with.
11:20 AM on 06/21/2011
The PR person at the beautifulpeople site does make a good argument about exclusivity. If people create exclusive organizations based off intelligence, wealth, and race, then why can't others create a club based off physical looks.

Personally I think the most people on this website are probably insecure actors/actresses wannabes, but then if belonging to this website makes them feel better, that's good for them.

I'm on the site. There maybe some vain people, but most I have met are intellegent and what many would consider very average. I believe I am an average looking person myself, I have my faults as does everyone. I'm short, balding, and I'm by no means rich.

In fact I would guess over 80% of the 700,000 users don't actually pay for the site. There are ways to get around it, and meet people (posting facebook pages) for free.

I joined the site because it is international. I am learning portuguese and was able to meet a very down to earth girl from Brazil that I talk with every day.

so are the people on the site that you've met, at all like the comments here would say they are?

I'm on the site. Although I don't pay for it, so don't get all the features. I'm curious to hear what anyone wants to ask me...

what features do you get and what features don't you get?

You are able to see pictures, send "blinks", and view profiles. You can also "rate" applicants.

Do men send in pictures of their junk for rating, or is it only their shaved, greased, and chiseled sixpacks?

That website is just beyond ridiculous. And, comparing a dating website to MENSA? Yeah...that argument doesn't really work...
