Michelle Obama Africa Trip Aims To Inspire African Youth

Michelle Obama Africa

PRETORIA, South Africa -- First lady Michelle Obama embarked on a goodwill visit to sub-Saharan Africa on Monday, a weeklong stay designed to show that America cares about the continent's issues and people.

Accompanied by her two daughters, her mother, a niece and nephew, Mrs. Obama planned a trip through South Africa and Botswana that was also shaping up to be an emotional and educational journey for the three generations of Obamas.

Many of the first lady's stops will highlight the legacy of Nelson Mandela and others like him whose struggles and sacrifices ultimately led to the undoing of apartheid, South Africa's system of racial separation.

Mandela spent 27 years in prison, including 18 years on Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town, for his role in the anti-apartheid movement. After he was released in 1990, he went on to become the country's first post-apartheid president and its first black elected leader, swept into office in 1994. He served one term and remains a revered elder statesman.

A meeting between America's first black first lady and South Africa's first black president was hoped for but remained unlikely as of Monday. At age 92, Mandela is fragile and his health determines when he can receive visitors. Mrs. Obama was, however, meeting Tuesday with Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, as well as one of the wives of Jacob Zuma, the current president.

Mrs. Obama received a warm welcome upon her arrival Monday night at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa, after 18 hours and more than 8,100 miles of travel. She was greeted by Ambassador Donald Gips and his family on a nippy night. Daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, 10, were wrapped in colorful South African blankets to ward off the chill.

Throughout the week, the first lady will promote youth leadership, education and HIV/AIDS prevention programs. The high point of the week is a speech Wednesday to a U.S.-sponsored gathering of young African women leaders from across sub-Saharan Africa.

The first lady will pay tribute to Mandela and the struggle against apartheid at many of her stops, including visits to his foundation, the Apartheid Museum and Robben Island. She also was scheduled to meet in Cape Town with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who received a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end apartheid.

She heads to Gaborone, Botswana, on Friday for a visit with President Ian Khama and other events. The trip ends with private family time on the weekend, including a dinner at a game park and a safari before the Obamas return to Washington late Monday.

This is Mrs. Obama's fourth time visiting Africa, but these are her first stops in South Africa and Botswana.

It's also the second time she has traveled outside the United States without President Barack Obama, whose father was from Kenya. In April 2010, she traveled alone to Mexico City and Haiti, after its devastating earthquake.

OMG, if you listen to her speak carefully some young naive ignorant or worst RADICALS may take her speech as a rallying call for black to act. Now what kind of action some of these groups may or maynot undertake, I hope its will not incite any violence. I hope Michelle know how her words may cause unintentionally violent consequences!

Media attempting to indicate this is her 1st "solo" trip--I remember 2 yrs ago, Prez flew back to DC from France but Michelle, mother, kids, godmother, relatives flew on to England--armored car & helicopter in tow. And how about her vacation to Spain and now another trip to Africa. How many more vacations is the taxpayer being swindled with these trips? Do they realize that people in the US are without jobs and can't take their own children on a day trip? And what about the unemployed youth in our own country who could benefit from her attention in our inner cities?

I don't know. Larua Bush went on 89 trips overseas without her husband, went to Africa five times with her children and their friends.
You didn't have a problem with that now did you?
The Obamas paid for their vacation to Spain.
It seems like it is not okay for a black First Lady to travel.

Maybe its the way The White House gives out press releases. Michelle's trips seem so humanitarian and educational until you look at the itinerary, looks more like a family vacation. Just say its a vacation a lot less would be said then pretending its not.

There is no pretense. The FLOTUS is doing her work for this country. She does not have to work 24/7.

During President George W. Bush's second term, Laura Bush was more involved in foreign matters. She traveled to numerous countries as a representative of the United States.

As First Lady, she took five goodwill trips to Africa. The purpose of these has mostly been to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and malaria, but Bush has also stressed the need for education and greater opportunities for women. She has taken many other trips to other countries to promote and gain support for President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS relief;these countries include Zambia (2007),Mozambique (2007), Mali (2007), Senegal (2007),and Haiti (2008).

In mid-2007, she took a trip to Burma where she spoke out in support of the pro-democracy movement, and urged Burmese soldiers and militias to refrain from violence.Later that October, she ventured to the Middle East. Bush said she was in the region in an attempt to improve America's image by highlighting concern for women's health, specifically promoting her breast cancer awareness work with the US-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. She defined the trip as successful, saying that stereotypes were broken on both sides.

The FLOTUS and her family do an excellent job of representing the best of America's long journey toward living out the inalienable rights guaranteed in our Declaration of Independence.

Best wishes to Mrs. Obama in the service to the USA that is required of First Ladies.

I don't recall free vacations being called-out in the Declaration

Michelle will show SP what it's like to tour historic places and come away more knowledgeable than when she got there. Watch and learn SP, she will kick you to the curb with her elegance and poise, and her ability to get down and become a part of the trip instead of some sideshow scene stealer...
