Netflix Down? Site, Streaming Offline For Many Users (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Netflix, which confirmed that its website and Watch Instantly streaming service suffered an outage late Sunday evening, has said that access has been restored.

@NetflixHelps tweeted around 3AM ET, "The website and watch instantly are online, but some are still having issues with activating devices. We'll have that fixed ASAP too."

Earlier, it had acknowledged that its site and streaming service were offline for many, writing in a tweet, "Hi everyone, we're working hard to bring the website and watch instantly back up. We'll post again when everything is back online."

According to Bloomberg, "The outage was not caused by a hacking attack, Steve Swasey, a spokesman for the Los Gatos, California-based company said in an e-mail. He declined to provide additional details."

If you've had problems accessing Netflix.com and the company's streaming services, you're not alone.

Users have taken to the web to gripe about issues they've had loading Netflix's site to both order and stream content. Netflix's movies.netflix.com is reportedly up and running for many, though subscribers say that they cannot access Netflix via their iPad or Apple TV.

Gigaom's Om Malik writes, "For past hour or so, I have been trying to access the service but I have been unable to watch it on my iPad or on my Apple TV. It is about 8.40 PST."

TechCrunch notes of the outage:

Reports of inability to access the site have been popping up since 5:23 pm PST according to one user and the website currently displays the above “service down” message (Netflix on the Wii and the iPad is still working apparently). There’s no word yet on whether this is part of a recent spate of hacks on services like Sony and Sega.

Twitter has been full of complaints from Netflix subscribers who are unable to access content. Some are already suggesting that a cyber attack may be to blame.

@Johullrich tweeted, "#netflix is down. Now the question is not how long until it is back up, but how long until users/pw database is posted."

Netflix has yet to offer an update on the situation via its official Twitter account (@Netflix) or blog.

The company recently announced that it would be pulling Sony movies from its streaming service due to what Netflix described as a "temporary contract issue between Sony and Starz ."

I can get streaming on my web browser and mv Vizio TV, but not on the Apple TV.

Streaming down again last night on July 18th. This happens many nights during prime viewing times. At least one night a week I am unable to stream content on any devices. A couple of weeks ago I could only get picture, but no sound was available (according in Netflix) on my Ipad. What's that about? Why would you want to watch something without sound. Getting very frustrating. Almost ready to cancel membership. To top it off Netflix customer service section won't even let you complain about a total outage of service. The customer service portion is just a big loop of FAQ's with no place to email or report a total outage.

super slow service....movies take a long time to load....many pauses while it loads again....we're using a sony blu-ray to watch netflix....i hope they find a fix soon....

I have the DVD, of Roswell have yet to sit and see them after 3 years!. However I was watching Merlin and wanted to see the next episode and error 300. Called Netflix and the automated voice said they were having streaming problems, however to try streaming on the pc. Well that worked but not as comfortable.
Was surprised that there was no mention of this issue in the media.

It's been off and on for three days here. Other sites consistently load np, so I'm pretty sure it's Netflix's issue. If nothing else, it has shown me how quickly I have become used to that mode of viewing.

Mine does this all of the time. It doesn't matter if it is on the computer or on the PS3. Just about everyday it tells me to try again later. If it is on the computer, the site just will not load the log in for me.

I considered the outage the universe's way of reminding me that 99% of entertainment is sewage we drink voluntarily. I opened a nice cabernet and reread Julian Barne's "Flaubert's Parrot" instead. I'd honestly forgotten what an amazing pleasure it is to have a mind, and how lucky I am to find myself with one.

But my will is, alas, weak, and I fear I'll fall right back into the trap of watching the improbably beautiful lead vanishingly unlikely lives and wondering what I can buy to make myself more like them.

I hope Netflix never gets its site back up. Long die Netflix!

The changed their User Interface and it is awful.

Their subscribers voiced overwhelming disapproval.

So far, Netflix is ignoring their paying customers.

glad to know wasn't alone. I tried from both my iPad and apple tv and was sad that it wasn't working. I made the choice to go without cable but moments like that made me maybe kinda sorta wish I had cable...but I survived and now it's back up and I cam watch Andy Griffith. lol did anyone have issues with Hulu plus?

Yesterday I had a problem accessing the web site. kept getting a 401 error message. Finally after about 10 minutes got to the site. Wanted to see if a movie was available for streaming. It is not. So I moved it up my queue and after they get the one I just sent them back. I should be able to see the move in a few days.
I love the service have both streaming and 1 DVD. Great deal.

We were among those who lost service. It has happened several times in the past month or so, but we still believe the $8 per month was a great deal. While inconvenient when it goes out, all in all the service has been great.
