Global Warming May Cause 15,000 More Temperature-Related Deaths In Europe Per Year By 2070, Study Says

Global Warming Deaths Temperatures

By SETH BORENSTEIN   06/21/11 02:18 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- A new study says one of the few benefits of global warming – fewer deaths from the combination of extreme heat and cold – may eventually melt away in Europe.

For years, scientists figured that with global warming there are fewer overall temperature-related deaths when those from heat waves and cold snaps are combined. The increase in heat wave deaths during hotter spells is more than offset by reduced cold deaths in milder winters.

But a new study in Europe finds that around 2040, the increase in heat deaths will likely outweigh the reduction in cold deaths. The study suggests that by 2070, global warming may cause 15,000 more temperature-related deaths a year in Europe, which has less air conditioning than the United States.

The study released Tuesday by Nature Communications looks only at deaths from heat and cold, not increases from flooding, droughts and storms. It used computer models to analyze the climate under global warming and compares those to death rates in 200 separate regions of Europe.

The study's chief author, Joan Ballester, a climatologist at the Catalan Institute of Climate Sciences in Barcelona, said the same death assumptions cannot be made for other continents.

Jonathan Patz, director of the Global Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin, said there seems to be fewer cold-related deaths in the United States than in Europe. That may mean that America will see heat deaths outweigh cold deaths sooner than Europe does, he said. Other experts say air conditioning in the U.S. is a big factor so that scenario is unlikely.

Overall, the decreases in European temperature-related deaths "are going to be clearly lower than what was expected," Ballester said.

Ballester's calculations show that starting around 2025, Europe will probably have the fewest temperature-related deaths in recent time, about 11,000 a year fewer than now. But then it increases back to current levels and by 2070, total temperature-related deaths will likely be higher.

Some places in Europe will suffer more than others, Ballester calculates. Figures show that southern Europe, especially Italy, will suffer larger increases in heat deaths while overall temperature mortality will continue to fall in northern places like the United Kingdom and parts of Scandinavia.

Patz, who wasn't part of the study, said Ballester's work "is really an essential paper in the field of climate change and health."

MAY?

So I guess this statement is just as relevant.

if temps keep rising you will see a spike in deaths as unusual heat hits an area. After that it rapidly drops off as the local area learns to deal with the heat. Florida one of the hottest US states with a significant aging population has low heat related deaths as they are accustomed to dealing with the heat. Were Montreal to get FL style heat for a month it would be tragic, but only the first time. Look at France in 2003 and compare with the heat wave of 2006. Their society adapted. More AC, more cooling centers in communities, better awareness etc. Unsual high temps kill, expected high temps do not.

Humans can't control themselves, what makes them think they control the climate? Climate changes have happened before. Before there were humans, before there were enough humans to make a difference to anything. It will happen when there are no humans. Control what you can, pollution, contamination, war, genocide, starvation, etc. Leave the rest to nature.

No one is trying to control the natural part, but it certainly is in our power to manage our own pollution. We've done it many times before.

Nothing of significance will happen at the nuclear power plant in Nebraska. Of course the religious left will absolutely freak out. As they always do. The liberal media will play on their fears and generate even more hysteria. This is called fear-mongering and really is back-ward thinking. Think of this group of thinkers belonging to the flat-earth crowd.
The engineers at the plant will learn from the event and develop even better nuclear technology. This is the calm and forward thinking crowd.

Hold the press! What about the approx. 200,000 people that are starving to death each year due to the bizarre push for ethanol production, which takes out perfectly good agricultural land and CO2-sequestering/O2-producing forests?

Oh wait, perhaps the eco-fascists view those deaths and the environmental destruction as a worthy sacrifice to Gaia.

More bovine faeces from the vested-interest CAGW brigade then.

I live in South Florida -- today low 90s with high humidity -- and we do not have people dropping dead from heat exhaustion. If this is problem, and I have serious doubts, then Europe needs to install some more a/c, and simply learn some warm weather basics: hydrate; wear lighter clothing; keep strenuous activity confined to evenings and morning, late afternoon; eat lighter foods.

Humans have figured out how to occupy every continent from Antarctica to the Amazon and Sahara. I'm sure Europeans can figure this out.

Of course, when the time comes and it doesn't happen--you never see a retraction. The year after Hurricane Katrina, the Global warming crowd was predicting the worst summer of Hurricanes in a century--but not only didn't it happen, there were less than average.

Did they retract their message? No, they just carry on and make another absurd statement.
