Former Gay Rights Protesters Now Set To Support Obama And Democrats

First Posted: 06/22/11 07:43 PM ET Updated: 08/22/11 06:12 AM ET

NEW YORK -- With President Barack Obama set to travel to New York City for a high-profile LGBT fundraiser gala on Thursday and the state of New York likely poised to pass a same-sex marriage bill around the same time, the potential for tension or simply good-old-fashion heckling seems high.

But in surveying a host of gay rights activists and donors, it seems increasingly clear that -- while there remains tremendous disappointment over the speed of Obama's continued "evolution" on gay marriage -- his relationship with the community is in fairly good shape.

One metric: When the Democratic National Committee hosted an LGBT fundraiser nearly two years ago to the day, the prevailing narrative surrounded who exactly would protest. Thursday, two of the three people who conspicuously skipped that event -- either out of moral objection or a longstanding policy against donating to committees -- will play a supporting role. The third is a DNC treasurer who was not available for comment.

David Mixner, the New York City-based author and gay rights activist, will be in attendance when Obama takes the stage at the Sheraton Hotel. Back in June 2009, he vocally criticized the DNC event after the Department of Justice filed a legal brief in support of the Defense of Marriage Act. It called the policy "good for the federal budget" and compared "incest" with gay marriage. With Justice having abandoned its defense of DOMA, and with Obama having successfully pushed a number of pro-gay initiatives –- chief among them the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell –- he has happily changed his tune.

"I'm attending tomorrow," he told The Huffington Post. "I didn't raise any money, but I wanted to show that -- even though I'm being a real hard-ass on marriage -- I support the president."

Mixner, whose writing often reflects the disappointed conscience of the gay rights community, said he has noticed a "sea change" in how the administration has approached LGBT issues. Informal polls on his blog used to registered 70 percent disapproval with the president's job performance as recently as the fall of 2010. One month ago, he said, there was 70 percent who rated the job being done as "good or excellent."

It's not just activists who are warming up to Obama in the lead up to the presidential campaign. The institutional gay-rights community is getting behind the president's reelection push as well. Obama's advisers are acutely aware of the fundraising prowess of LGBT donors, and they've catered their outreach to reflect that demand.

The thawing of the relationship, however, has worked both ways. The Democrats are back to courting the LGBT community, as well.

Alan Van Capelle, formerly the executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda and now a deputy in the New York City Comptroller's office, did not attend the DNC fundraiser in 2009. It was, he told The Huffington Post, not due to the DOMA brief, though he did object to it. Rather, it was because he refused to help raise money for the Democratic Party, which then could use those funds to support candidates that opposed LGBT rights.

A year ago, he changed his policy. "This is the first time I've done it," he told The Huffington Post. "Because it is this president, I have confidence about giving to the DNC where I haven't before."

Not everyone in the gay rights community has been so readily persuaded by what Obama has managed to accomplish. His slow, public "evolution" on marriage has produced its fair share of ridicule -- so confident is virtually everyone around the White House that the president secretly supports the cause. There is also a gnawing anger among activists over the fact that they had to protest the president in the first place.

"We had to beat the bejesus out of him to get what we got," said John Aravosis, a prominent activist and blogger. "We had to beat up the president to get him to move. He pretended he would be our fierce advocate, and then they got into the White House and said, 'Uh, we don't have to do what we discussed.'"

"It was all B-list stuff that should have happened day one," he added. "On the big stuff, we shouldn't have had to beat them up to get them to move forward."

But the president did, eventually, move. And the LBGT community as a result of that -- or other compelling political pressures -- is now poised to reward him.

"Look," said Mixner, "what are my options? Michelle Bachmann? Rick Perry in Texas who is going to pray for the family council down in Texas? I don't think so. Let's be practical here."

Jordan Howard contributed to this report.

In 2004 -over c-span -- Republican National Committee voted on their Platform.

Included was their UNANIMOUS vote, Not only against Gay Marriage but also against
Civil Unions...which was presented by Mississippi's Haley Barber.

Barber had previously resign as from chairmanship of RNC national after footage aired
on television showed him sitting at a table (covered w/table cloth) -- with a bunch of
hookers underneath, and everybody giggling.

With Amnesia being rampent coupled with prevailing Republican lies over our air waves
then as now, soon after he became MI governor and began dismantling medicaid there.

Two gay men can't marry?
So what?
Neither can two heterosexual men.
Why? Because the 5000 year old definition of marraige should be changed just because you don't like the term "Life Partner."

Now which definition are you speaking of- the one that designates women as chattel, or the one where women are bought and sold?

Actually, no. 5000 years ago marriage didn't involve taxs and insurance, hospital visits... If marriage stayed as it was 5000 years ago, (which was really just about keeping property in the 'right' bloodlines) you could keep it. However, the LAWS have changed, and if you want to keep th the Code of Hammarabi, have at it, but we are supposed to follow the US Constitution which states ALL citizens have equal protection under the law.
This has nothing to do with 'liking' words.

If President Obama does not support gay marriage, I will not vote for him again. Come on -- it's 2011 for crissakes!
04:24 PM on 06/23/2011
Yeah, SURE you won't vote for him.

If it is between him and Romney you will vote Romney? Of course not.

Will you just stay home? Brilliant. That is a de facto vote for Romney.

You are only shooting yourself in the foot.

Sure....cut off your nose to spite your face...If you vote republican everything that Obama has done to take a step in the right direction will be destroyed. For the record though, I do not believe you voted for him in the first place.

It is true, we have no alternative. I will vote for Obama but I will not volunteer or donate money to his or any Republican candidates.

I'm glad the Gay community is coming around, I understand they didn't get everything they wanted but they did get quite a bit, read reluctantwasps post below for a list of O's accomplishments for the Gay community. We on the left, as different as we are from one another are all in this together. The Pres needs our help in getting things done. If we let a repud get in the WH it will set us back a generation.

militant? REALLY...? Militant...? ......its just frustration, the Majority of LGBT americans KNOW that Obama is OUR ONLY Choice.......were we excited in 2008 when he won, HELL YEA.....did we think things would be a tad different,sure....but who doesn't have PIE in the SKY? Anyways, tho LGBT people are not a monolithic crowd.......we come from all walks of life, all colors, all backrounds....outr main goal is the same, EQUALITY under the law...to be treated the same as every other American (MINUS the anti-gay religious Interference in our lives.)... Obama has my Vote Locked UP.....and I donated $50 to his re-election.......cause, despite things moving slower then we'd like.....I'd NEVER EVER EVER Vote GOP.....and well, as of now...voting 3rd party...unfortunately is a waste of vote.

Then perhaps an olive branch should be extended to them?

And what's "militant" about wanting the same equal rights as you enjoy? Anyone killing to get them? Blowing up anyone in order to advance equality? No? I didn't think so. I'm wondering about your use of the word "Militant" - it's hyperbolic and manipulative.

What more can this president for the GLBT community? I looked at the gains that have been made just in the last couple of years, and I'm confused because there has been more done under this president for the GLBT community than any other. I can only imagine that the community is feeling the pressure, because if Obama is not the president in 2012, all gains will be repealed and there will be no progress...at all. Just look at how the Republicans are attacking EVERYONE's rights by taking away Union rights, fighting health care bills, defunding Planned Parenthood and education, taking money from the poor, elderly and disabled; revisting Rov v Wade every single year; fighting to keep the rich and powerful from paying taxes. Just look at our crumblin infrastructure, and you know the list's can go on and on. Do you think they will give a rat's arse about GLBT's? So I say yes take it to the president, but don't say he hasn't done anything for the GLBT community. There are too many bills that have been passed on behalf of the community and if you are a member of the community, you know them all too well. So I ask again, "What else can he do for you"?

The 2012 election needs not be a referendum on gay_marriage. We had that in 2004 and we all know what happened. Obama is more likely than any other candidate to advance gay_rights and should not be forced to voluntarily paint a giant target on his back for saying he openly endorses, supports and is willing to pursue same_sex marriage rights across the country. I'm willing to take his nod and a wink with the eye to subtlety and make sure that Democrats are in power and Obama remains the President. If Obama loses, we can look forward to a Christian_fundamentalist Presidency which will be riddled with obstacles for the gay_rights movement.

I appreciate David Mixner's stance when he says, "let's be practical here." He's right. The President is absolutely the best chance the LBGT community has to get where they want to go. Throwing your vote away does not help the cause. Getting him re-elected does. Period.

he cannot please everyone...so just do what is right....cut government spending until the national debt is paid off and the budget is balanced....and pass the 28th amendment...congressional reform act of 2011...and repeal the 16th amendment and give us a simple fair tax with no loopholes, no deductions, no filing and no social engineering by congress...give us tort reform and campaign finance reform.

The President isn't involved in NY - He isn't responsible for CA - The work has to be done with the voters- they voted down Gay Marriage in CA- The Senate- The House- The House is trying to use tax payers money to fight DOMA- after this admin said hey wouldn't fight it- The focus should be on the one vote NY needs to pass Gay Marriage- one vote- The President can't be that vote- One Senator can-
