Morgan Freeman Talks Afterlife, The Universe, Aliens On 'Through The Wormhole'

Morgan Freeman

"I'm not what you'd call a deep thinker," Morgan Freeman insists, as he posits a question about the limits of the universe. One glance at his big screen resume, with its slew of major awards for a career filled with jarring and affecting performances, would be enough to render his comment as mere self-deprecation, but a few minutes spent pondering the cosmos with Freeman leaves no question that he is just being humble.

It's not often that you'll find an Oscar winner (and five time nominee) and AFI Life Achievement Award recipient in the back reaches of cable, hosting a show about science, but as his trophy case would indicate, Freeman is a rarity. While many Hollywood players are content to live within their own stars, Freeman spends his time pondering about the ones galaxies away.

As host of "Through The Wormhole," in its second season on Science, a channel from the Discovery Networks, Freeman tackles the lofty questions in life that generally crop up in laboratories and late night chats amongst heady college freshmen. For Freeman, exploring the questions of space and existence has been a longtime love, borne of his interest in science fiction. It was that fiction that opened his eyes to the possibilities of reality -- or, whatever version of it we live in.

"[I started] thinking about possibilities and the fact that it wasn't too long ago that the world was flat, and that was a 'fact,'" Freeman recalls in a conversation with The Huffington Post. "It wasn't too long ago the universe revolved around the earth, the earth was the center of it all: 'fact.' So we're now this far along, we know a lot more about things, but they are still 'facts': nothing can travel as fast as the speed of light: 'fact.' It would take millions of years to travel to a distant star: 'fact.' Are they facts?"

It's a jarring series of questions to hear coming from a man who has played God on multiple occasions; but if Freeman doesn't have all the answers, his voice provides the air of authority that fills each thought with gravity.

In each episode of "Wormhole," Freeman tackles from all angles, with opinions and models from researchers, scientists and philosophers, a question whose answers may yet be unknown, or, perhaps, unprovable. In one episode this season, he looks into the idea of a sixth sense, or, the ability to know something before you know it.

"I think we do," have a sixth sense, he says. "I think it's been proven a number of times that, you know, you're in a crowded room and you look around and you're looking into someone's eye and [you know what they're thinking]. We know that thoughts are energy, they create an energy and they can be directed. You go off into an empty house, you can tell it's empty before you get there."

Taking the question of intangible human energy a few steps further, another episode takes on the after life.

"We ask a question about -- is there such thing as a soul? Is there some part of you, an energy that goes on after the rest of you cease to be? And there are a lot of different beliefs in it," he teases. In the episode, the case is argued by one scientist that, indeed, human energy does leave the body when that vessel expires, though Freeman wouldn't say what he believed to be the truth.

To hear him tell it, everything we think we know is really not known for sure; and as for what we think about the things we don't know, those theories stand on even flimsier ground.

"We've seen different manifestations of others' imaginations of aliens. Aliens could look like anything; it just depends a lot on their environment. [We portray them as having] two arms, two legs, a head, two eyes, a head, a nose, two years, and that's not necessarily [true] at all. They could look more lizardly, they could look like anything," Freeman says. "There's just no way of knowing... If you look at some of the aliens on earth, ants for instance, they communicate chemically, other aliens communicate with different bells, whistles. Crickets, what do they do? They rub their wings and make this noise. So do cicadas and other insects. And they communicate."

Freeman doesn't pretend to know the answers, but finds it massively important to pass on whatever knowledge exists, and continue the push for more.

"Here's a question you can contemplate," he proposes. "Is there a difference between space and the universe?... they say that the universe is expanding, so if it's expanding, what is it expanding in to?"

Tune into "Through The Wormhole" at 10 pm EST/PST on Science to find out.

Separate Morgan Freeman’s personal foibles from the commentary about Science.

The Science is what's important - killing the messenger is inappropriate - look at the Scientific message instead – that’s where the meat is.

It's all that matters.

If you are so petty that Ad Hominem attacks are all that you are capable of - well - that means you have nothing to say about the subject - only the messenger.

The message is all that matters - grow up.

Well he'd know. He's God, right?

Or, wait, maybe he just plays him on tv.

Yeah, I'd question my afterlife too if I'd have left my wife of 26 years to marry my step-grand-daughter! Pile on the karmic debt, Morgan!
09:36 PM on 06/25/2011
Karmic Debt? Just who are you to judge? You really know nothing,do you?Any "other" human knows after 26 years a relationship changes, sometimes,it even gets old. Also this is NOT HIS DAUGHTER,also,..how much was he at home?Seems he worked allot. Also kids 'want' their parents,Edipis Rex etc.So here is a little girl who growing up loves her "DAD" only she knows that he is 'not',and says."I'm gonna marry him,I love him." He is a man who sees at times,a little girl that grows to womanhood, and loves him.She is NOT his 'blood' daughter, they are allowed,it's THEIR BUSINESS not yours. If she were from another family, far away, then what? No Problem. She is young and will go on,they know this,so let them be.YOU were NOT there.I am SURE that they 'talked' plenty, before making this move.Stop Judging people, about what you know nothing.

Why should anyone be threatened by questions of life and the universe? Is it that popular "science" is more of a religion than it thinks it is?

No - it's because the current religious environment is threatened by knowledge - religions and churches always are (after all - look at what we're expected to believe with no evidence or facts - just BELIEVE!!).

Science is not a religion - you DON'T have to believe - just try to understand.

That's just one of the differences.

STUPIDITY,....is the key,2/3 of the USA,has average or below average intelligence, and so goes the world. That's the eighth grade, here and the fifth grade elsewhere. So their "Universe" is bound by religions, hook line and sinker.Just 500 years ago you were 'burned at the stake' for such talk,it's embarrassing to be human at times. Many are to hung up in their lives, and many, just don't wonder. But I do.100 Billion,suns/stars like ours with planets, what are the chances? Now that's our Galaxy, the Milky Way.Now so far as we can see now, there are 100 Billion Galaxies, each containing etc. Also might be 100 Billion Universe's,And that is on "just" this demension. We are made of space dust, our planet,..us.Other exploding suns, colliding planets, made, and make us up.We are all connected, all one.Science sounds more like the bible, then the bible at times. Then, our "minds",not our brains, but our minds kick in.Opening mental vistas as far reaching,as the physical universe. Then the universe of our bodies, and 'The Black' of what we can't see.And in all of this 'some' apes in suits, judge others in their, from their personal stupidity.Nothing was behind me,or anywhere around me,and I was "PUSHED" hard out of the way of a car accident, that happened five seconds later, right where I was standing. So unseen forces, energies,to us anyway ARE HERE,I felt them, more then once.We are the Universe, not of it,we are it.

When Big Tobacco came out with "scienctific" studies there were a ton of believers. Doctors in fact promoted Big Tobacco "science".

He nailed his 16 year old step-grand-daughter whom he and his wife helped raise from infancy after his step-daughter moved on with them. I adored him and revered his talent and was heart-broken when this story broke. He's a fraud and a pedo.phile. I am not buying anything he's selling! Disgusting!

You may not like him, however to call him a pedophile is absurd. Pedophiles are specifically attracted to children 13 or younger, or prepubescent children in general.

In case you have not noticed, the female is the smarter, and SHE makes the moves. This did not just" happen",You dare to judge him ? On what grounds? Religious? Social? Could it be that they share a wonderful friendship,a life friendship, isn't that what a marriage should be ?Then she matured, grew, and so did they.Mind your own business.

It's a great show. Very entertaining and thought provoking. Much better in my view than wondering who is going to make it to the next level on Dancing With The Stars.

Should be a good show as long as religion is not taken seriously.

I had a near death experience and on another list someone said, "There are two types of people. Those who have had a paranormal experience and those who haven't." I was sitting suffering and then it all went black and white. Then I was on a street in my hometown and it was summer and beautiful beyond description. My mother was there young and beautiful wearing a summer dress. I knew I couldn't go forward and then it faded to black and white and I was back. My sister was beating on me to awaken me and I went to the hospital. I asked the nurses can you have visions or dream when you pass out and they said no. You survive. You are loved. The universe is magnificent and we don't know very much. Don't be afraid of death. I'm not. Its the next step on the journey. I love this show and its ideas.

I hope for the best for you - don't ever stop trying to understand. Our brains, and the understanding of them, is still in infancy - you have (unfortunately) experienced what happens when the brain is not happy. I'm glad you're here to tell us about it.

Tell us more.

He's an actor folks, a talented one with a nice voice, but an actor. He is not a doctor of philosophy, not a physicist, not a trained theologian.

Through the wormhole is an entertaining show, but the words are scripted, and even then the fact is that to someone with an actual science education they are laughably simplified. I mean part of what makes physics and cosmology so cool can really only be explained in terms of math.
11:22 AM on 06/24/2011
He is the narrarator of the show. He's not the person coming up with all the ideas and research.
10:59 PM on 06/25/2011
In Hawaii, they would call you "High Makamaka" you walk with your nose in the air.Yes Mr. Smarts,WE know what Morgan Freeman is,and is not.Although it's "laughably simplified" to YOU a man of such a vast education,to others who are not,I think those, are whom it was made for, find it very interesting.Other also 'cool' humans, who can understand the vastness, yet simplicity of the universe and see and feel it on a non-math,level..see ALL roads lead to Rome.

Through The Wormhole is one of the best shows on TV. I absolutely love it. Talk about food for thought. If you haven't seen the episode on life after death, you're missing something. Actually, they're all good, and really good food for thought.

People I know who don't watch it say that they can't understand it. And what I say is to not even try. Just listen and imagine. You'll start to get a feel for it after a while.

Morgan Freeman is a rare, rare human. His intellect, his talent, his very character make most others pale in comparison. But it was never hidden, and was fully exposed when you find out that he, until recently single-handedly blue water sailed his 40+ ft sailboat. You must be a many-faceted and talented person to perform this feat.

Yet, most idolize the Wilson Owens, the Dunns, the Snookies, GaGas and Pee Wees.
11:07 PM on 06/25/2011
The reason being, there are 'more',of their ilk.Less of Morgan's.but we are here too.2/3rds of the people of the USA have average and below average intelligence. That's eight grade and down.
