9 Out Of 10 Americans Don't Expect Raises To Compensate For Rising Price Of Goods, Survey Says

Americans Wages

As the economic gloom settles in, American workers seem to be coming around to the conclusion that they may be facing a permanent midnight.

A new survey from American Pulse, released in June, shows that 9 out of 10 American workers are not expecting salary increases next year to compensate for the rising cost of basic necessities like fuel and food.

Faced with increasingly expensive purchases and stagnant salaries, 70 percent said they planned on changing their habits by buying only necessities going forward, according to the survey. Only 6.6 percent said they planned on changing nothing in their budgets. This is bad news, not just for the American worker, but for the economy as a whole: consumer spending accounts for roughly seventy percent of G.D.P.. If Americans are only spending on necessities, they won't be driving economic growth. In the first three months of the year, consumer spending expanded at a rate of just 2.2 percent — much slower growth than anticipated.

American Pulse's results join a host of other recent findings that together paint a grim portrait of Americans' expectations.

Nearly half of America thinks the U.S. is nearing a second Great Depression, according to a CNN opinion research poll, while a new Gallup poll showed economic confidence plummeting in June. A third poll indicated that workers are more dissatisfied than they were before the recession -- facing low prospects of advancement, nearly one in three of those surveyed said they they were seriously considering leaving their jobs.

And with an unemployment rate above 9 percent, those sentiments could be here to stay, especially with corporate profits now 22 percent above their pre-recession level, according to a recent report from the Economic Policy Institute.

As economist Brad Delong notes in the Mother Jones' story "All Work and No Pay: The Great Speedup", corporate profits and rising wages for employees used to be more closely linked.

Not long ago, "businesses would hold on to workers in downturns even when there wasn't enough for them to do," Delong says. "That era is over"

Free trade was about impoverishing you, no unions can stop this, only ending free trade and bring back tariffs, good luck with that not the banks own the Republicrats.

I'm happy to report that I am about to give my team an average increase of 6%. They have no idea it's coming and they will be very happy. I'm thrilled to do it, and work for a company who puts their money where their mouth is.

This is what happens when banks control your politicians. Both sides are in on this, time to get over it.

Here's the reality. If there is someone in India that can do what you do, your job is either going to leave, or your pay is going to drop. Sad, but true.

The Republicans are counting that as a WIN for them. NOTHING that stimulates the economy, while OBAMA is in the White House is good for them. See HP Board: "Dick Durbin, Chuck Schumer Accuse GOP Of Sabotaging Economy For Political Gain" It says what we all KNEW from the beginning in 2009 when Obama took the Oath of Office. That they want to see him FAIL and by extension the country will stagnate. So, with no raises for us, the Republicans APPLAUD. Sickens my stomach to know that's how these so Called American patriots are sabotaging the economy willfully and knowingly.

For the workers who won't be getting raises there are likely many more wondering if they will have a job since the corporations and manufacturers find they can bloat their bank accounts and those of their share holders much fuller if they take their business to 3rd. world countries and 'treat' those poor folks to $4.00 a week and NO bennies.

Attitude has a lot to do with success and I read a lot of bad attitude comments here..Could it be remotely possible that many of these posters have difficulty getting past a job interview...
01:51 PM on 06/24/2011
Many of the commenters on here are already retired and have the time and experience to read and research what is going on.
A good attitude is a good thing to have and you need to have that even for the minimum wage jobs. Today, unless you have technical, engineering or accounting skills you are fortunate to be able to secure the very low paying jobs with no benefits. It isn't possible to keep a roof over your familys head even holding two minimum wage jobs with no benefits.

But I have read that the bankers and CEOs get a much bigger paycheck and bonuses even higher than the years before.  That is like rubbing our faces in feces, flaunting and taunting us.  And where does our government find the money for these useless wars?
06:15 AM on 06/24/2011
They always have the coffers of the MIC and DOD stockpiled with the BIG bucks. For them war is great for 'their' economy.
They keep that money while they were helping themselves to the 'entitlement' funds for decades and using that money for their own 'pet' projects. Now they tell us the well of entitlements is running dry.

If the money doesn't exist for a war they simply run up the deficit and then start shrieking about how "entitlements" (SS & Medicare) are bleeding us dry.

Social Security has not increased over the last three years, and some employees have had pay and benefit cuts last year and some this year. CEO's however not only keep their million dollar salaries and million dollar bonuses but see them rise. We wonder how can these people live with themselves knowing that they are responsible for this financial disaster, for the millions of jobs that have disappeared, for the downward spiral this country is experiencing, and the hunger and homelessness of millions of Americans. We are speedily heading towards a two strata society, the obscenely rich and the extremely poor, thanks to corporate criminals. These are the very people who make sure that they pay no tax, but receive tax refunds through tax loopholes from the IRS to the tune of millions of dollars. How unfair.

Well the CEO could fire you so say thanks

Seniors on Social Security haven't had a Cost Of Living raise in three years, as if that doesn't make ends meet hard enough, cuts in benefits like Heating Assistance are on the way. I really don't know how some of these Corporate C.E.O.s, Wall St. manipulators and Family Value Republicans can sleep at night when so many Seniors are dealing with hardships on a daily basis when it really doesn't have to be that way.
11:38 PM on 06/23/2011
They sleep just fine.

They have to be socio-paths (psychopaths).

They have NO empathy or conscience concerning the lower classes.
We are just unimportant animals and (wage) slaves to them.

You should have gotten the hint when it took Chavez of Venezuela to send heating assistance to our elderly.  And for that we bashed him but voted for these criminals in Washington again.  The enemy is us!

"9 out of 10 American workers are not expecting salary increases next year to compensate for the rising cost of basic necessities like fuel and food."

Now there's a cognitive disconnect for you. It's like saying "9 out of 10 workers don't expect a tossed salad at dinner every night next year." Many workers aren't even thinking a raise will happen at all, never mind whether it'd offset cost-of-living increases.
The grander question is: is it likely we will have our jobs? For sheltered pollsters who don't leave their cubicles: probably. Most other people: looks grim.

We’ve been on the run
Driving in the sun
Looking out for #1
Zimbabwe here we come
Right back where we started from

Hustlers grab your guns
Your shadow weighs a ton
Driving down the dollar
Zimbabwe here we come
Right back where we started from

Zimbabwe!
Here we come!

On the stereo
Listen as we go
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
Zimbabwe here we come
Right back where we started from
Pedal to the floor
Thinkin’ of the roar
Gotta get us to the show
Zimbabwe here we come
Right back where we started from

Zimbabwe!
Here we come!

Things should bode well for all those dum__ss "conservative" "business owners", eh?
11:41 PM on 06/23/2011
The Big Boys (Big Corporations) will eat up the small business owners just like they ate up the ordinary workers.

Why do you think the small businesses pay more taxes than the Big Corporations?

The Big Boys buy the politicians.
