Arizona Death May Be Linked To European E. Coli

MIKE STOBBE   06/23/11 02:21 PM ET   AP

ATLANTA — The death of an Arizona man who recently visited Germany may be linked to the food-poisoning outbreak in Europe, health officials said Thursday.

The man, who died in mid-June, developed a serious E. coli complication that can lead to kidney failure. But officials don't know yet if he was sickened by the same bacteria strain that has hit thousands in Europe, mostly in Germany.

If confirmed, it would be the first U.S. death and sixth case tied to the outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials said the man was over 65 and lived in northern Arizona, but released few other details. His recent trip to Germany – coupled with the kidney complication – sparked suspicion the case was linked to the European illnesses, said Catherine Foley, an epidemiologist with the Arizona Department of Health Services.

So far, there have been five confirmed cases in the United States – two in Michigan and one in Massachusetts, Wisconsin and North Carolina. All but one had recently been to Germany. One Michigan case apparently caught the illness from the other, a relative.

Arizona officials are not aware of anyone being infected from close contact with the deceased man, Foley said.

Officials have traced the outbreak to raw vegetable sprouts from a farm in northern Germany.

Nearly 3,700 have been reported ill in Germany, including more than 800 with the kidney complication. There have been 42 deaths reported in Germany and one in Sweden.

No confirmed cases have been seen in U.S. military personnel or their dependents that are stationed in Germany, CDC officials said. Nor have there been an increase in visits due to gastrointestinal illness at U.S. military medical facilities in Europe.

Huff Post this is really unprofessional, bean sprouts have been cleared of causing the E coli outbreak in Europe and here you are continuing the falsehood. The cause is most likely the over use of antibiotics used in chickens and other animals and their feces contaminated vegetables.

Twas, the spouts indeed. While bean sprouts are one of the healthiest things on earth to eat, the environment in which it is necessary to grow them can be a breeding ground for E Coli. I stand corected

They still do not know in Europe what caused it, so HP do not blame the sprouts, that would be a lie. Why does HP not wait for the facts, just mindless typing to get a story.

WRONG. The organic farm that grew the bean sprouts have been tested and came up negative, the cause is most likely the overuse of antibiotics in the raising of animals.
For your edification, its spelled V -E-G-A-N.

European papers and websites reported that this bug was bioengineered to be resistant to 8 differnt classes of aintibiotics. It has high kill rate. I think I read that it was also patented but I don't remember the details.

Look it up yourself. Then you will believe it.

it's in german i'm afraid. it mentions those rumours and goes on to say that '' the german society for hospital hygiene '' would consider it a mistake and negligent not to investigate that possibility.

I hate when there is food outbreak because certain vegetables that I can eat raw like spinach I simply cannot eat them cooked. I wonder if its safer to buy your food from the local farmers market.

No! Its not a large farm its an organic farm and if you lived in Hamburg it is a Local farm! Best to boil, or pickel in alcohol! The words"i simply cannot eat them cooked". indicate you are willing to have chronic diareah, or even disentery! Please pick out your casket and write your obit! cause your attitude is one who is willing to die for your principles! eat some bacon ,Rosalee Harris ,it wont kill you!

My understanding is that one shoud not eat raw bean sprouts, as all Mung bean seeds are contaminated. If they are cooked, they are fine and actually have more food value than raw.

Problem.....

It's not a new bug and not one made in a lab. Microbiologists completely uninvolved with agri-business are saying this, and have been for weeks. It's not even that "super".

It's just about food and human poop. That's it. An irrigation problem...a washing hands problem...not a conspiracy.

I hope you are right. Where's the link: How do you know this ? Most of what I have read was in German... the bug apparently is immune to 8 different antibiotics hence the conclusion lab developed as that does not occur in nature kind of like winning the lotto in reverse

With fresh water increasingly becoming a cost issue, do not eat sprouts you do not grow yourself.  It is very common for sprout "farms" to reuse the rinse water over and over.  That's the problem.  Makes me think twice about eating sprouts in restaurants too unless they are making their own.

this is exactly opposite of what one should do. Stop being such a clean freak and eat some dirt once in awhile-it will do you good. Living in a bubble will make eventually make you unable to tolerate any infectious agent

I hope you would agree it's more important to stop putting routine antibiotics in farm feed so as to be able to keep animals in inhumane conditions.   Sorry to say no one on the planet has a gut that could withstand this monster E. coli.  You eat it, you are sick and you might die, no matter how much dirt you have been mixing with your whiskey down in Baja.
