Brazilian Mass Gay Wedding Strives For World Record (VIDEO)

WATCH: Brazil Tries To Set Mass Gay Wedding Record

About 40 gay and lesbian couples exchanged vows under Brazil's new landmark law in an effort to set a new world record for a mass gay wedding.

As GlobalPost is reporting, the crowded and noisy procession included a series of live musical performances by transvestite singer Jane di Castro, who entertained the crowd with send-ups of Richard Marx’s “Now and Forever” and Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.”

Brazil's Federal Supreme Court legally recognized same-sex partnerships in May in what has been hailed as a historic case for gay rights in a nation with the world's largest population of Roman Catholics, reports the BBC. But as GlobalPost notes, the new law's application has been inconsistent -- a judge in the interior city of Goiania, for example, single-handedly annulled a same-sex union, despite the fact that no one had opened a case against the couple. That union was restored during the mass ceremony.

Whether or not the Brazil ceremony broke any records remains to be seen. Furthermore, a similar mass same-sex wedding in the Philippines, reportedly set for this weekend, could potentially give the Brazilian version a run for its money.
