It's probably safe to say that thousands, if not tens of thousands, of "in the know" Chicagoans drive by Horween Leather every single day and never give even a fleeting thought as to what's going on inside. And that's a shame, really, because what's going on inside is pretty damn amazing.
As a company, Horween's been in operation since 1905. It's been in its current spot there on the Chicago River since 1920--which is a hell of a long time. It's a family business, through and through.
