Obama Speaks To Gay Supporters At LGBT Gala Fundraiser In New York

Barack Obama Gay Donors Fundraiser

ERICA WERNER and JULIE PACE   06/23/11 10:19 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — Treading carefully, President Barack Obama praised New York state lawmakers who were debating landmark legislation Thursday to legalize gay marriage, saying that's what democracy's all about. But as expected, the president stopped short of embracing same-sex marriage himself, instead asking gay and lesbian donors for patience.

"I believe that gay couples deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in this country," the president said at a Manhattan fundraiser, his first geared specifically to the gay community. Coincidentally, the long-planned event occurred just as lawmakers in Albany were debating legislation that would make New York the sixth and by far the largest state to legalize gay marriage.

That served to spotlight the president's own views on same-sex marriage, a sore point with gay supporters who've otherwise warmed to Obama. The president has said his views are "evolving," but for now he supports civil unions, not same-sex marriage.

Obama said progress will be slower than some people want, but he added that he was confident that there will be a day "when every single American, gay or straight or lesbian or bisexual or transgender, is free to live and love as they see fit.

"Traditionally marriage has been decided by the states and right now I understand there's a little debate going on here in New York," he said to laughter. New York's lawmakers, he said, are "doing exactly what democracies are supposed to do."

Debate on the measure continued into the night at the statehouse, and the outcome was uncertain.

As Obama spoke a handful of people shouted out "marriage!" And Obama said, "I heard you guys." He never directly mentioned gay marriage.

Obama said there were those who shouted at him at events about other causes of the gay community, such as the need for anti-hate crimes legislation and for the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" ban on openly gay military service, and both of those have since been achieved.

Obama also has won favor by instructing the Justice Department to stop defending in court a law defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Obama told of receiving a letter last year from a teenager in a small town. He said the boy was a senior in high school who was gay and was afraid to come out. The boy wondered to the president why gays shouldn't be equal like everyone else.

"So, yes, we have more work to do," Obama said. "Yes, we have more progress to make. Yes, I expect continued impatience with me on occasion."

He said teenagers such as the one who wrote to him "remind me that there should be impatience when it comes to the fight for basic equality. We've made enormous advances just in these last two and half years. But there's still young people out there looking for us to do more."

In a direct appeal for votes, Obama said: "With your help, if you keep up the fight, if you will devote your time and your energies to this campaign one more time, I promise you we will write another chapter in that story. ... I'll be standing there, right there with you."

Overall the reaction Obama got was warm from the crowd of nearly 600 who paid up to $35,800 each to hear him speak at a midtown hotel. And only a small group of protesters showed up to demonstrate outside for marriage equality. It was a measure of how much the gay community has warmed to Obama since earlier in his administration when donors threatened to boycott Democratic fundraisers to pressure Obama on "don't ask, don't tell."

If Obama were to endorse gay marriage, it would give a jolt of enthusiasm to his liberal base and perhaps unlock additional fundraising dollars from the well-heeled gay community. It's not clear it would get him too many additional votes in 2012 though, because the Republican field's general opposition to gay rights gives activists no alternative to Obama.

At the same time, supporting gay marriage could alienate some religious voters that the politically cautious White House might still hope to win over for Obama's re-election campaign.

Obama has indicated support in the past for states allowing gay people to marry. As a presidential candidate, he went so far as to congratulate gay couples in California who married during the short period when gay marriage was legal in that state before voters shut it down.

The president also signed a questionnaire in 1996 as a candidate for Illinois state Senate saying he supported gay marriage, something the White House hasn't fully explained.

Even as the president deliberates, public sentiment is marching decisively in the direction of supporting gay marriage. Depending on the poll, people are now about evenly split or narrowly in favor.

"There's been a noticeable shift the last couple of years," said Carroll Doherty, associate director of the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. In March, the center found that 45 percent of those surveyed favored gay marriage and 46 percent opposed it. That was the first time that the survey found an essentially even split instead of majority opposition.

It's something the president has noted, telling liberal bloggers in October that "it's pretty clear where the trend lines are going."

The question is when, how and if the president goes there too.

I know some of the old timers here get tired of hearing my position on this, but if you want gay marriage, you should allow three (4,5, ...) people to get married. There is no magic about the number 2 (a "couple") if you are redefining what marriage is. I know some triads (3 people) that have been together for years. If only the gay community would be honest, and try to open up marriage to any number of  Read More...

It's truly sad that something as frivolous as gay marriage passes law so quickly while the medically uninsured linger in limbo and must pray they don't get sick. I guess the homosexuals have more clout than the poor.

With all his golfing lately ..I thouth this was about LPGA.LOL. One question. For Years this was about Gay and Lesbian rights...How did the "B" and the "T" get tacked on the end of this. If this is about Marriage and rights explain the Bi-sexual role in Marriage. Mon-Wed-Fri one way, Tues- Thurs- Sat, another and Sunday is a day of rest? Notice in the article the "B's" and "T's" are not mentioned once. ???? I'm not even going to go into the"T" portion.

Obama thinks that traditional roles should prevail re marriage. Same was said of voting rights, interracial marriage, job discrimination. Obama has no problem with federal laws on those national issues But then those issues involved blacks. It took only about one hundred years after ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment to do that. Maybe he figures gays need another hundred before they can be equally protected.

Obama is a transparent flunkie to shameful political calculus.

His position on equal rights is "evolving?" This from the first African American President? Amazing. It just boggles my mind.

Are you folks just noticing now what he really is?

I am amazed that President Obama did not immediatly cave to something he has said he does not believe. It is nice to see someone hold to their principles instead of allowing others to force them to do something they don't want to do. I only hope the people in New York who have to vote on this horrific issue can hold up to their beliefs and not be forced to do what they don't want to do.

My question is, "Why is our government becoming involved in such personal issues?". I have always heard that you don't want Uncle Sam to be looking into your bedrooms so why is the issue being forced. Yes, make the laws such that you can have whomever you want to be your beneficiary, your health partner as long as you are the one that pays for their policy, give rights to make decisions for you to whomever you wish, just do it legally.

Yes, we all have the right to establish who we want to take care of legal matters for us, just make it universal for all states and then leave the marriage issue alone. Don't be bullied into accepting what you don't believe. I believe this country and the politicians, in particular, are being bullied to support this when they absolutely don't believe in it. Stand up, be strong, be truthful and then stick to your guns!

If Clinton was the first 'black president' he's pretty much been the first 'gay president'. He hasn't done gay marriage but the list of what has been accomplished is significant. And a republican could quickly repeal many of them.

I believe the President would like to endorse gay marriage nationwide, but he knows it is still too controversial. He has done a lot for the gay community sofar, but not enough to give them the same civil rights as anyone else. Sometimes I wish Obama would not be the chess player he is, but more like a bull dozer pushing the change through that he was elected for...

I believe that President Obama would like to not have to think about someones sexual preferences at all and get on to running this country. Only bullies have made this an issue of far more importance that it should be. He has stated his position that he believes civil unions would be ok but marriage is between a man and a woman. Why can't you just accept what he said instead of trying to force him to change?

The generally well-written article by Erica Werner and Julie Pace, included one overdone generalization: "the well-heeled gay community". Sure, there is a very well-heeled gay community (as there is in places like LA, DC, and SF) in Manhattan, much of the money from inheritance or from working in socially liberal Wall Street. But, there is throughout much of middle America, a gay community that mirrors the general population (only often worse) in lowered economic security during these hard times.

1. Gays do NOT have anti-discrimination employment protections in many states (including second most populous Texas and 4th in rank Florida). Pres. Obama could have pushed this through Congress early in his presidency but, did not fight.

2. Many surveys show that contrary to popular belief, gay couples in the U. S. (especially lesbians) do not enjoy above average incomes, in fact lower.

3. I know several older gay couples together for thirty or forty years. Were the older and/or major breadwinner was the first to die, the younger or "homemaker" half lost ALL rights to social security and/or pensions from his partner. Sadly such survivors needto fight their partner's biological families for what both had built up for many years unless they "bought" lawyers to provide adequate protection.

The President talks about letting states define our rights as Americans. Does he really think he would be president if the states still defined rights vs. a vs skin color???

Lets not forget that Stonewall was 42 years ago. Let's not forget that the legalization of gay sex was a decade ago. Let's not forget that this is the first time a President of the United States has ever attended a high profile gay event.

It was a Supreme Court decision, Bowers v. Hardwick I think, that reversed a previous decision handed down only a few years earlier. No Presidential signature was required.

The fact that America's first African American president is now using a 'State's Rights' argument on equality issues is enough to make MLK and Bayard Rustin roll over in their graves. Obama's own parents would not have been able to marry in certain states if marriage had been left up to the states to decide.

PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, until there is marriage equality......my advice is for those in committed relationships to "lawyer up" and take nothing for granted.

The best way to bring our the worst in people is to have a wedding or a funeral. All gloves will be off!
