legalize and tax. Fantastic source of new government funding and those who support legalized marijuana are happy. It is a Win Win.

I love Ron Paul. His ideas on what government should be are exactly what our founding fathers envisioned.

Im sure the President would prefer it if he never had to deal with this. But when questioned on his position regarding federal legalization of marijuana I can understand why this particular president almost has to take a strong conservative position. In an era of nonstop news coverage where sensationalism trumps substance for top story almost on a daily basis. Even the most idiotic of news stories and talking points is honored with endless hours of coverage and in depth discussion. If this president legalizes pot the fact that he happens to be a African American President sadly is a coincidence that won't be lost with the bigots in this country. Lets not forget a few months ago when the long version of his birth certificate was released congress was in the middle of serious budget talks and all the media wanted to talk about was his long version birth certificate to the public. Congress was in the middle of some of the most important budget talks in recent history. All the media wanted to talk about was the birth certificate. They were so drunk for that story that all Trump had to do to get them to follow him around was make issue of the subject. Which he gladly did in order to push his TV show. This President inherited a full plate at a time in our nations history where political rhetoric has reached all time lows. Nope, this President doesn't need the added grief.

Legalization would be a great way to cut government spending!

This one will not get heard or voted on in congress, but ten more just like it need to be written so eventually one gets through.

Let the people decide/vote not just a bunch of stuffy republican who spend all day deciding what rights you may or may not have

Check out a patent that the government has, its number 6630507.

If politicians would be drug tested a lot of them would show up positive and then they will legalize weed.

HE HAS SOME VERY GOOD IDEAS .RON PAUL WOULD NEVER BE ACCEPTABLE TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, HE SHOULD RUN AS AN INDEPENDENT? HE'S TO HONEST, DOSE NOT KNOW HOW TO LIE, RECEIVES HIS BACKING FROM THE WORKING PEOPLE, AND IS NOT A CURRUPTIBLE WAR MONGER CATERING TO THE INTERNATIONAL OIL RICH SUGAR DADDIES AND DOES NOT GO AROUND BREAKING EVERY LAW IN THE BOOKS-----

Ron Paul has a voice, which speaks for me. Granted not everyone who 'speaks for me' should be President, but their voice of reason is still appreciated.

Ron Paul has the platform to speak up LOUDLY, utilizing facts while leading the way to an end to the war. Maybe he will shame those who spin madness with facts.

I don't agree with Ron Paul on everything and in reality would not vote for him, over President Obama, but I do respect his courage to stand up and lead the discussion. Respect is earned and he is earning my respect now.

I would love to see President Obama step in and support the discussion. If he would support the discussion, he would show 'real' leadership. Ron Paul and Barney Frank are worth listening to.

Cannabis is one of the top cash crops in America. That doesn't happen by accident. Many Americans are forced into the closet, due to 'madness' associated with cannabis. A real discussion could 'end' the madness.

President Obama could help bring an end to the 'war on American soil'! The 40 year war has gone on long enough. Enough people have been put into prisons and our criminal justice system, just so 'greedy' politicians can spin madness for political gain. Their gain has been our loss. Their tough on drugs rhetoric, while avoiding the facts has hurt this country.

It's time to end the madness and move along to victory. President Obama could move us along to victory. Hemp would lead us to economic and environmental victory. It's time to talk about it!

End the war! End the madness! Lead this country in a new direction! A Democrat and a Republican have joined forces to end the war! That's a step in the right direction. President Obama could lead us to a new day. Letting ordinary adult Americans out of the closet!

Yes we cannabis!

That this issue should still be in question completely confounds me. Is our government completely out of its mind? Marihuana is one of the least toxic substances one can possibly indulge in. Far less dangerous than tobacco and virtually all of our prescribed pain-killers.

My doctor had no compunction about prescribing the most dangerously addictive Schedule 1 narcotisc for me when I was suffering from a kidney stone .... and likewise for a compressed vertebra. Had I taken either of these drugs, I would be totally dependent on them today,.

Instead I smoked marihuana .... and made my way through both terrible times. I had no nausea .... no side effects ... apart from the fear some dumb dumb would knock down my door and haul me off to jail. When the stone passed,I stopped. It's expensive. And haven't had any for four or five years And am not jonesing without it either.

But I am furious that the drug companies and the medical establishment are so keen on protecting their interests that they persist in spreading nonsense regarding the effects of this relatively safe substance.

Sheer nonsense.

How about we tackle drunk driving instead, Now THERE IS a problem. And I've never seen a pot smoker either throwing punches ... or throwing up .....

The other day myself and a few others called RP a hypocrite because of his stance on signing that BS abortion crap and Romney's refusal to sign. Lord were we criticized. But it's okay (which was my original point) to legalize a drug? Pot isn't the only thing he wants to legalize. Look at it this way. Legalizing for clinics to give clean needles to drug addicts to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS didn't work. Neither will this. Great. Would love an employee who is high and then claim for mecidinal purposes (which is legal.) But wouldn't pot heads love to just do it and then later protected by some employment law as an addendum. Your a bleep RP.

Yes, lets just keep locking people up until we turn the whole country into one giant prison.
01:41 PM on 06/24/2011
Don't do it and you won't go to jail. That easy.
02:03 AM on 06/26/2011
It already began in the 1930's when they passed the law allowing people to own their own prisons..And get PAID for locking people up. America has the most people in prison than Any other country in the world. I'm sure if we could somehow get the number of the amount of innocent people in jail now, it would make people sick.

Drugs and abortion are very different issues especially if you look at it from a Lockean position, which he is. Abortion, as Paul sees it, infringes on the life of a living person. Legalizing drugs allows individuals to choose for themselves if they are going to ruin their lives. No allowing abortion is the proper role of government in a Lockean form because it protects life (if like he does you consider life begins at conception), making drugs illegal is an infringement on liberty and therefore the government should not be involved in it. It is actually not contradictory or hypocritical.
01:40 PM on 06/24/2011
You are correct. If someone chooses to destroy there life with drugs that is there decision. Just like it is a woman's decision what to do with her body and no one should tell them what to do especially since they will NOT be supporting that child emotionally and financially, etc....

Marijuana is much more dangerous than most believe or know, it is also considered to be a “gateway drug”, meaning that the marijuana use might lead to another drug, one that is generally considered to be even more dangerous than marijuana. However, based on facts, the dangerousness of marijuana is the fact that marijuana causes apathy, destroys ambition, and life, while addicted to marijuana, revolves around using marijuana instead of working towards and achieving life goals.

well I suppose your last sentence could be said about any substance that is used to alter conscienceness.... but the rest of you ramble sounds like you are working for big pharma...too obvious to be an actual opinion since it makes no sense and there is no science behind your comments... gateway drug... nope.. causes apathy.. maybe while using it .., detroys ambition.. that is a foolish comment.. addicted to marijuana ? are you kidding ..it's hardly addicitve.. I used it in the 60's and early 70's .. like many of my friends did.. haven't used it since.. neither have my friends.. addictive ? proof that you have no idea

Marijuana Side Effects

Marijuana side effects come from smoking or consuming the drug and marijuana side effects influence the mind and body of the user. Marijuana side effects can be as seemingly innocent as an increased appetite to as life threatening as lung cancer. Increased likelihood for accidents is also one of the marijuana side effects. Studies show that 6 to 11 percent of fatal accidents are contributed to by marijuana side effects.
Marijuana side effects from an overdose include toxic psychosis including hallucinations, delusions and a loss of self-identification. Over 11 million people smoked marijuana last month. Many may not have severe marijuana side effects from taking the drug but many people will. Marijuana side effects include physical problems like breathing difficulties and deteriorating physical abilities. Despite a popular belief, marijuana side effects speed up the heart, blood and breathing rate. The body is taxed more and this speeds up the aging process just like methamphetamines do. The marijuana side effects from this extra exertion on the body include a higher risk for lung cancer, heart attacks and strokes.
Marijuana side effects also wreak havoc on the brain when the drug is used habitually. The natural chemical balance of the brain is disrupted affecting the pleasure centers and regulatory systems. The ability to learn, remember and adapt quickly to changes is impaired by marijuana use. Depression often occurs with marijuana usage, which feeds into the cycle of more drug use to treat the pain created by drug use.

What exactly is your goal? Spreading propaganda and lies on a public forum? How is that being productive?
06:02 AM on 06/24/2011
Scientists have identified more than 150 chemicals in marijuana smoke and tar. Marijuana smoke contains cancer-causing chemicals such as benzopyrene, which occurs 70 percent more in marijuana smoke than in tobacco smoke. Examinations of human lung tissue exposed to continuous marijuana smoke in laboratory testing show precancerous cellular change.Studies have shown that regular use of marijuana can cause addiction. Marijuana withdrawals include restlessness, anxiety, disorientation, irritability and cravings for more marijuana, in many cases worse than someone going through nicotine withdrawal. As marijuana has grown in potency in the last decades with advanced growing techniques, it does not take much marijuana to become addicted.

Now also you need to look at all of the components in Marijuana that are harmful. Did you know that if there are toxic metals or chemicals in the ground its grown in it will absorb them then you smoke them.
As for facts, alcohol has one component that affects the physical/mental aspects of humans. Weed has like 20 some harmful, toxic, mind altering chemicals in it AND the effects the mind for months and the residuals stay in the body for anywhere from weeks to months. Oh alcohol is metabolized , that means broke down, by the body and turned back into a component USED by the body sugar.
Weed chemicals inhibit and expel neuro-receptors in the brain causing short and long term neural effects many times worse than alcohol and ya know it seems that every proponent FOR weed seems to think its so much better than ethanol, yet ethanol is several times LESS TOXIC than weed, oh and does anyone know how its made? sugar compounds are ingested by yeast, making ethanol and carbon dioxide. Distill it down (remove the water) gives you a simple compound,,,ethanol.

If marijuana is so toxic, how come people aren't dying from it in the millions like they do from alcohol and tobacco?
01:53 PM on 06/24/2011
No evidence to back up your claims, how typical of the reefer madness crowd.
05:44 AM on 06/24/2011
See the biggest proponents of weed legalization are pot heads and the ones who think its ok cause its not lethal. Well I have been on this Earth over 40 years, and have seen many many old friends and a few family members who used it and so far out of probably 50 plus only two have used it and actually succeeded in any way. I watched a friend who just loves it, not a stupid guy, will work hard for his stash money but he has been in jail for it and carrying drugs for dealers, his life is over more or less.
Trust the facts, the majority cant control them selves, therefore there are laws to protect themselves.

And you're a big success aren't you? I'd say you're the one who can't control yourself, wasting your time spewing this drivel.
12:17 PM on 06/24/2011
I can't agree with your argument. Take your argument to its end. We have to protect people who can't control themselves. So does that mean we can decide how people spend their money because they can't control their spending habits and go into unsustainable debt? Money issues is the leading cause of divorce in this country and divorce has negative effects on society therefore the government should be able to mandate how people spend their money? Sorry I don't believe in that philosophy.

FACT:Effects On The Central Nervous System

Marijuana mainly affects the Central Nervous System. Effects can vary according to the mental state of the user, the social setting, and previous usage. Marijuana alters moods, coordination, memory, and self-perception. Marijuana users often claim heightened aware- ness of surroundings, a slowing of time, extreme hunger and a dry mouth. Increased usage of marijuana causes hallucinations, delusions, anxiety, and paranoia. The THC in marijuana alters several neurotransmitter systems in the brain. This explains marijuana’s somewhat unpredictable effects. THC alters the lipid membrane in all neurons and interferes with the normal functions of these brain cells.

You found a way to create your own delusions without the help of any drug. Why don't you apply for a government grant so you can show the rest of us how you did it?
