Mac Gains 50 Pounds For 'It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia': Rob McElhenney Gains Weight For Show (PHOTO)

First Posted: 06/24/11 05:21 PM ET   Updated: 08/24/11 06:12 AM ET

Rob McElhenney will do anything for a laugh.

The creator, executive producer and co-star of the FX hit comedy, "It's Always Sunny In Philadephia," McElhenney has broken every racist, homophobic, child abusing, misogynistic taboo possible in the show's six seasons. Now, for the show's seventh go-round, he's putting his body on the line -- just because he thought it'd be funny.

McElhenney gained 50 pounds for the coming season because he thought it would be funny to play his character, prideful and in shape Mac, as a fat guy.

“It’s been disgusting to watch him go through with this adventure,” co-star Charlie Day recently told Screen Junkies. “We were a little on the fence about it for his own personal health and safety, but it has definitely made Mac a lot funnier.”

Check out this photo of McElhenney in his new skin (and Hawaiian shirt!), and below that, a before and after slideshow, and see if you agree.

I have never watched this show but I think the extra weight makes him look okay! He is far from obese, if that was what he was looking for.....Add another 50lbs, then maybe!!!!

its was obvious he gained weight throughout his wife's pregnancy and after the birth of their son, as many men do. i think he just went with it and decided itd be a good way to work it into the show, as opposed to saying "oh, i simply just gained weight, whoops."

Men gain weight after their wives give birth? I didn't know that was a thing.
04:04 PM on 06/27/2011
yes, men frequently gain weight with their wives through pregnancy and even after birth. think about it, they give into cravings as well, are stressed about an upcoming child, then once the child is born, they sleep less, are stressed more, and end up eating poorly. research it, you will find it to be true.

The show was funny for a few years but last season was only so-so. Gaining weight for the show sounds like a convenient excuse to lay around eating all day without feelings of guilt.

There were some great episodes last season but overall it wasn't up to par with previous seasons. Hopefully, the weight gain angle will add something to the show.

I don't understand why HuffPo showed three pictures of him on that slide show posing next to a giant bird. Weird.

What's equally as strange is that the giant bird was flightless at one point.

"gains huge weight for show..."

AS opposed to those of us who know how use English in a grammatically correct way, such as:

"gained a huge AMOUNT of weight for show......"

or

"gained weight for the show.....

You're assuming he's not going to gain any more weight. While making a grammar mistake yourself.

who know how use English in a grammatically

Instead of, who know how TO use English in a grammatically.

The Grammar Nazi got Grammered.

"who know how use English in a grammatically"

I have a team of experts trying to figure out that this abomination means. :D :D

"Instead of, who know how TO use English in a grammatically. "

1. Look up the difference between a 'typo' and a misuse of grammar.

2. As with the example above, the team of experts is also trying to noodle out what this non-sentence means - At last count, we spotted 5 grammatical mistakes in an 11-word non-sentence. Kinda amazing when you think about it.
