The 17 Most-Visited Sites Of 2011 Ranked By Google

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/24/11 02:22 PM ET   Updated: 08/24/11 06:12 AM ET

Google recently refreshed its list of the top 1,000 sites on the web.

The sites are ranked in terms of unique viewers, based on data gathered by DoubleClick Ad Planner. Google explains how this advertising service determines a website's weight: "DoubleClick Ad Planner combines information from a variety of sources including anonymized, aggregated Google Toolbar data from users who have opted in to enhanced features, publisher opt-in anonymous Google Analytics data, opt-in external consumer panel data, and other third-party market research."

The top 1,000 list is far from definitive, though. Google has left off specific kinds of websites, such as "adult sites, ad networks, domains that don't have publicly visible content or don't load properly, and certain Google sites." So if you're wondering why Google.com, for example, doesn't appear anywhere on the list, that's why.

Check out the slideshow (below) to see the top 17 most-visited sites, according to Google. Vote for the sites that most surprised you and share your thoughts about this list in the comments. You can also see the entire list (here). To see how this list compares to previous states, take a look at the top websites from 2010.

I'm stunned by dominance of Microsoft on this list.

Undoubtedly, Google is the most popular site on the web. It is so popular that Google had to exclude themselves from their very own list of popular sites to appear fair. Now that's what I call popular!

Really people! Are you the ones who never read the "instructions" before a test or putting
together a model? At he beginning of the article there was a paragraph stating that they
did NOT include Google, adult sites, oh, read it for yourself. Do you not feel stupid after
10 or 15 people point it out in the comments and you still don't get it? I like to read the
comments but it gets tiresome after 20 people ask the same question that is answered
at the very beginning of the article. Sorry to sound so uppity but GEEZ, use your brains!

I sorta knew that FB will be #1, a little surprised that Google isn't on the list though... its funny how 3 of the websites included in the list are Chinese

Google is the most popular of all. The list was made by Google and they decided to exclude themselves from the list to appear impartial. I thought that was a little stupid on their part though to do that. Facts are facts.

Bing? Surely you jest. The only people using Bing are Luddites that don't know how to change the search prefs.

Not much of a surprising list, really.

Of course, eliminating adult sites must have changed things up quite a bit.

Second paragraph

"Google has left off specific kinds of websites, such as "adult sites, ad networks, domains that don't have publicly visible content or don't load properly, and certain Google sites." So if you're wondering why Google.com, for example, doesn't appear anywhere on the list, that's why."

Amazing. From among these websites there are two, MAYBE three that I visit on a regular basis (which doesn't mean every day, or even every week) - and I can tell you nro. 1 isn't one of them. :)

Wikipedia and YouTube are the only two sites on this list that I go to regularly. Apparently, there are a lot of people in China now on the internets.

Why isn't google on this list?

Better question: why would you ask that question when you obviously didn't read the preamble to the slideshow?
