LOS ANGELES — Amid awards for the top artists, actors and athletes, Steve Harvey was recognized for his humanitarian work at the BET Awards.

BET Chairman and Chief Executive Debra Lee called the 54-year-old entertainer "a true gentleman who acts like a comedian but thinks like a citizen of the world" as she presented him with the Humanitarian Award.

Harvey thanked God and his fellow philanthropists as he accepted the honor.

Patti LaBelle also accepted a special honor at Sunday's ceremony; Gladys Knight presented her with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

"I plan to hold myself up higher because I've gotten this wonderful award," the 67-year-old singer said, and then she grabbed a microphone and sang a pair of hits, including the breakthrough hit "Lady Marmalade."

Harvey and LaBelle were among dozens of artists recognized at the BET Awards, which were presented at the Shrine Auditorium.

The night's leading nominee, Chris Brown, collected four awards in all. The 21-year-old singer won a pair of prizes early in the show and two fan-voted awards at the end of the ceremony.

Brown was named best male R&B artist and won best collaboration for his song "Look At Me Now" with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes.

Brown accepted the collaboration award after performing a medley that including the winning track.

"Public-speaking is not my strong suit," he said, thanking BET and his fans before passing the microphone to Wayne, who expressed gratitude to Brown for including him on the track. Busta Rhymes rapped his acceptance.

Earlier in the ceremony, Brown also thanked his fans and the network: "I appreciate all the support. I know it's been a long road, so I appreciate every blessing in front of me."

Lil Wayne also came on stage when Nicki Minaj accepted her award for best female hip-hop artist.

"I can't believe for the first time I get to share a moment like this with the person who saw me rapping on a staircase," she said of the rapper and producer, who was incarcerated when she won the same prize last year. "Lil Wayne, I love you."

Minaj was joined by Justin Bieber to present the male hip-hop artist award later in the show. Kanye West won but wasn't on hand to accept the trophy.

Instead of traditional awards-show winners' envelopes, winners were revealed on a tablet device provided by Sprint. But the tablet proved tricky when it was time to announce the winner of the Viewers' Choice award.

A fan was brought on stage to announce the winner, and she initially said Brown won. Then she corrected herself to say Rihanna won, and Drake came on stage to claim the trophy. After a commercial break, host Kevin Hart clarified that "there was a mistake," and Brown had indeed been the viewers' choice.

Other winners included Diddy Dirty Money, named best group, and Jaden Smith and Willow Smith, who tied as winners of the Young Stars award.

But the show was really about the performances, which were plentiful. Mary J. Blige opened the ceremony, performing her hits "All Night Long" and "Real Love" before being joined by Anita Baker. The divas performed a duet of "Caught Up in the Rapture."

Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled and Ace Hood shared the stage for "Hustle Hard." Alicia Keys unveiled a new song, before lapsing into "A Woman's Worth," for which she was joined by Bruno Mars, and her hit, "Fallin'."

Jill Scott sang in a speakeasy setting. Trey Songz took off his shirt during his performance, even after host Kevin Hart said the young singer looks "like a beige greyhound" shirtless.

Donnie McClurkin kicked off a gospel celebration, with Mary Mary and Deitrick Haddon joining in to sing "Thank You."

Beyonce performed from across the pond: Her headlining set at the Glastonbury Music Festival was beamed into the Shrine from England.

Some of the comments here with underlying racial overtones are completely unnecessary. I mean if you don't like music by black artists like hip hop then why comment on this page talking about the BET Awards or call those who won D-Listers....i bet they're making more money in a day than you make in a year!!!

Personally Chris Brown is not my cup of tea though his music sounds good. As for the rest congrats on the win and may the BET awards keep getting better with time.

There was once a point in time when we African Americans made and supported our own stars and if the white media (who didn't want to include us in the media empire they created which is why BET was created in the first place!) liked them then so be it and if they didn't then who cares.

I miss them days and love that BET is bringing them back!

some people just hate to see black people come together to accomplish something good
12:35 AM on 06/28/2011
and some people like to overlook major character flaws just because they are both same race or color or nationality. If I remember correctly, most black people supported OJ at the time. Your sort of thinking holds people back. Bad is bad no matter the color. Too bad you can't see that. Funny that your moniker is knowledgeseeker. Should be knowledgeavoider.
10:38 AM on 06/28/2011
Actually no most black people did not suppport OJ...I never understand the reason OJ is used as the litmus test example when talking about black people...

"most blacks supported OJ." really? So you "knew" he was guilty before he went to trial? I hate statements like this. OJ is a piece of trash, but we are ALL innocent in this country until proven guilty.

some white people forgot that at one point black performers were excluded from other media outlets... BET is just a response to the continues lack of diversity on the other networks, what else were we suppose to do.. keep begging for inclusion on TV.

Fanned! I could not have said it any better!

apples and oranges. BET should not promote people who are horrible role models. THere are plenty of talented performers who do not beat up women. If Brown was white, would you have a problem that he beat his girlfriend?

so basically BET cheapened their awards by giving them to a bunch of D-listers.

Just because you don't know who the performers are, and how popular they are you shouldn't say anything.
05:03 PM on 06/27/2011
So these awards support beating women.
06:09 PM on 06/27/2011
If that's your best argument you failed...if you believe that I guess that would be the basis of all awards shows that give awards to people like Josh Brolin, Charlie Sheen or Jack Nicholson...

I agree with Cambel, he could have killed someone. I also find Josh Brolin, Charlie Sheen and Jack Nicholson just as undeserving and creepy.

I can't support or cheer anyone who damaged a woman so badly and seemed sorrier for himself than the woman he beat.

Watching the pre-award show my head started to spin. Not sure why BET has to make things SO flashy and "blingged out". I DVR'd the rest of the award show and I'm looking forward to catching that. Admittedly, I can only listen to a little at a time.. it's all just too much - like Liberace.

Brown is a woman abuser and a coward...he should not be celebrated.
03:52 PM on 06/27/2011
Why? His music is great... this is about the music not the incident that happpened almost 3 years ago when he was 19...you know people can change right?
People celebrate Charlie all the time and he hasn't changed not one bit...and he's a veteran woman beater and coward...but he's just so funny on 2 1/2 men(sarcasm)

Charlie Sheen is a di** also he should not be celebrated, Sheen I mean.
05:05 PM on 06/27/2011
So if somebody who was a member of the KKK made great music, then would you tell BET that they should give the guy an award because "Gee, his music is great"

Also, if Charlie Sheen is the best comparison you have then you've already lost.
