Anne Hathaway Talks Oscars, Catwoman In 'Dark Knight Rises' In Harper's Bazaar

Don't diss Anne Hathaway on national TV -- you might end up having your word choice corrected during a series of emails.

Yeah, she's just that nice.

The star actress, who hosted this year's Academy Awards to less than rave reviews, talks in the new cover story for Harper's Bazaar about how she responded to co-host James Franco's slight dig at her during an appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman."

"I love her, but Anne Hathaway is so energetic, I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway," Franco said back in March. And how did she fire back?

"I let James know that a whirling dervish is a more flattering comparison than a Tasmanian devil. I called him, and we e-mailed a bit," she reveals. Umm, ouch.

But perhaps she's not so angry because, beyond the fact that reviews for her performance were less critical than Franco's detached cool, she felt it was a positive experience just to be there.

"In the grand scheme of things, I got to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," she tells Harpers. "I met great people, wore beautiful clothes. And I got to put on a show. I don't see a downside. Anyone who disliked my personality probably disliked my personality before the Oscars."

Speaking of show, Hathaway is changing it up for her next role; she's playing Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's Batman finale, "The Dark Knight Rises," and she's finding the part to be a physical challenge.

"I've always thought that skinny was the goal, but with this job I also have to be strong," she said -- and it makes sense, considering she'll be taking on Christian Bale's considerable hero. Of course, she won't be as buff as Tom Hardy, who has packed on an insane amount of muscle for his role as giant villain Bane.

Hathaway has also spoken about working hard to live up to comparisons to actresses who played Catwoman in previous films (though she probably doesn't have to worry about that Halle Berry film, which was widely panned).

"It makes you work harder, I take a chance not that something may work. But there is a certain satisfaction in that, towards the end of the day did everything," she recently told a Swedish website (via Comicbookmovie.com).

Hathaway will next star in the summer romance, "One Day," alongside Jim Sturgess; the story of two college friends who never quite got their relationship right, it hits theaters in August. For that film, Hathaway dons an English accent.

I liked her....before the Oscars. She was annoying

Beautiful and nice. The kind of combination people will try to pick apart. At the end of the day she will still be beautiful and nice.

She was great at Alice in Wonderland.

I found all those woo-hoo's she kept screeching every time a winner was announced to be a lot more annoying and sophomoric than Franco's less than enthusiastic stage presence. Did she think she was at a pep rally?

Ummm, the Academy Awards are pretty much nothing BUT a prep rally for over-priveleged actors. I still watch every year and am entertained but really now. It's primarily a bunch of rich men applauding themselves in the national spotlight and nothing more. I do always pay special attention to the music, effects, screenplay and animation awards though. Those aren't millionaires but regular working folk who just happen to be awesome at entertaining us and I support them a lot more than an individual actor, actress, director, producer, etc...

I think she looks better when she doesn't smile. She has too much gum ! She may need to add some curves to make a catsuit look good.

Such a terrible choice for Catwoman. She's too adorable for the part. And she keeps getting into 'mishaps' on set. They hired a woman to be as agile as a cat, and she's continually ripping her costume, accidentally hurting stuntmen, etc.

I definitely share your concern over the casting but given Christopher Nolan's stellar track record thus far, I'm withholding judgement until it comes out. The man simply doesn't make many, if any mistakes.

I do agree with you on that point - Nolan is brilliant. I'm hoping I'm wrong with this one!

It is absolutely shocking that James Franco has the gumption to badmouth anyone connected to the Oscars. That Franco Jerk was a Zombie/Frankenstein throughout the whole Oscar broadcast, plus he was scared pussycat. This jerk deserves to have Anne Hathaway unleash the wrath of khan on his a**. I respect Anne even more for hosting the Oscars by herself, without the help of that lump of coal. James knows his actions at the Oscars will endure for eternity- that is only reason why he was hating on Anne .

So calling someone energetic is a "diss" now? Then I am sooooo adding that to my list of "burns'.

"You called me a mean b*t*h?? Well you're...ENERGETIC!!"

Ok, maybe NOT! *lmao*

JGarner is so jealous of her and says she is really mean. Oh well. Hollywood is very competitive. She did fine at the Oscars. But I don't get the comment that she thought skinny was the goal. She is as bony as anyone walking. I think being a gread actress is the goal, no?!

Jennifer Garner? Where is she mentioned in this article? I think you're confused. James Franco made the comment about Hathaway, not Jennifer Garner.

I think she's awesome. Franco in my opinion is the most overrated young male actor.

I agree on the Franco bit. I've never been impressed by any of his roles and have always seen him to be a fairly lame, one dimensional actor. He was pretty good in "Milk" but he was basically just playing "sensitive Franco" compared to "Angry Franco" in Spiderman 3, etc...

1) She is good looking.
2) Not even if there was a nuclear war and you were the last male standing.

I remember when they announced that Hathaway and Franco were hosting the Oscars, and I thought ????? These people arent comedians, as we've seen great comedians like Letterman falter as the Host of the Oscars. I'm suprised Hathaway/Franco's handlers let them take that gig, as I'm sure it was a great opportunity, but the downside was that they could look foolish up there. I felt bad for them that night because it was tough to watch, almost to the point where I couldn't look sometimes because it was so awkward. That was probably the worst Oscars they had in years....
