Bernie Sanders: Don't 'Yield' On Debt Deal (VIDEO)

Bernie Sanders

First Posted: 06/27/11 06:38 PM ET Updated: 08/27/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- It wasn't quite a "fili-Bernie," but Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in a 10,000-word speech on the Senate floor launched a campaign Monday to call for eliminating tax breaks for the wealthy and protecting working people in a deficit-reduction deal.

"Instead of yielding to the incessant, extreme Republican demands as the president, in many respects, did in last year's tax vote and this year's spending negotiations, the president has got to get out of the beltway ... and rally the overwhelming majority of people who believe that deficit reduction must be based on shared sacrifice," Sanders said.

Sanders took to the floor for an hour-and-a-half-long speech to call for people to contact the White House and demand corporations and the rich are hit as hard as social spending for the poor in a debt-reduction deal, which is being negotiated ahead of a vote to raise the debt ceiling.

"Tell the president not to yield one inch to Republican demands to destroy Medicare and end Medicaid while continuing tax breaks to the wealthy and the powerful," he said.

Congress must approve an increase in the debt limit, currently set at $14.29 trillion, before early August to prevent the government defaulting on its loans, according to estimates from the Treasury Department.

Republicans are calling for major spending cuts as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling, arguing that to increase the limit without preconditions would be irresponsible. But House and Senate Republicans have also said revenue-raising measures, such as ending tax breaks for the wealthy and some subsidies are off the table.

Democrats argue that certain subsidies, such as those to major oil and gas companies, and tax preferences for families that make more than $500,000 per year should be eliminated to allow for slimmer cuts to government programs and services.

In his speech, Sanders listed 13 measures that could reduce the deficit without cutting Social Security, Medicare or other programs. Along with ending tax breaks for oil and gas companies, Sanders said the government should eliminate offshore tax havens, bringing the deficit down by $40 billion over the next decade.

If Congress voted to repeal the Bush-era tax cuts for the top two percent of earners, the government could raise another $700 billion, Sanders said. Creating an estate tax on inherited wealth of more than $3.5 million would raise more than $70 billion over a decade, he added.

Sanders also called for cuts, including shrinking military spending by ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as soon as possible.

"We have got to reduce unnecessary and wasteful spending at the Pentagon, which now consumes over half of our discretionary budget," he said. "Much of the huge spending at the Pentagon is devoted to spending money on Cold War weapons programs to fight a Soviet Union that no longer exists. That has got to stop."

Is he the dog or the pony in this show? $40B is only 0.2%, not 2%, just point 2% of the current deficit. And that is only going to be reduced "over the next decade". The middle class is getting royally screwed within the next month regardless of which plan they use to screw us. The rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer, and the middle class will disappear before my 9 year son has lived his life.

President Obama will continue to move toward the right, so long as progressives allow it.

The Tea Party crazies are moving the GOP to the right fringe for 2012, so the President has gone from courting moderates and independents to courting "slightly conservative" voters. He's happy to take all the turf the Republicans are conceding.

If progressives don't like it, their only recourse is the threat of a primary challenge or a viable independent progressive candidate. That's the only thing the Administration is afraid of - going out on a right-wing limb, and having it sawed off behind them. They know that sitting Presidents lose elections when weakened by their party's own base - Ford (Reagan), Carter (Kennedy), and Bush 41 (Buchanan).

So if Senator Sanders wants to keep the President from blinking, he needs to privately tell him, "If you blink, I'm running against you."

Nonsense. the progressives need to change the discourse of the Democrats like the TP did to the GOP. Google Precinct Committeeman to see how they did it. Change starts at the bottom and goes up. What is happening in Libya is a good example. I starts with the citizenry.

Currently the Focus must Remain on the US Economy and not on either the Republicans or the Democrats.... Calculating 20% and 12 % --- on This and. That, are totally Irrelevant, as right now there are no Stable Stats that are Available neither are required . Efforts and Unity are required Not Choices and Speculations. of different Parties... This my (our) sweetie from NY. Don't dismiss watching this because she's a Democrat. LISTEN to what she says about our Congress, our government. Her feelings about how the nation is the yo-yo and the repleicans are the stringmasters. HEAR and HEED what she says about filibusters and bills and intransigence.

Thanks for the link, she wasn't on my radar. She is obviously a rising star, her youthfulness is refreshing. Sadly, for every one of her, there are too many dinosaurs. I hope that being a Democrat doesn't curb her enthusiasm. Perhaps, once she has become more established, she will become an independent, that would free her from the jellyfish surrounding her, and increase her individual political weight exponentially. The more independent politicians there are, the better this country will become.

When I called my two Democratic Senators offices today (Murray & Cantwell) to say that I support what Bernie said, the reaction I got was "what speech?" "it was about what?" Just great.

I like President Obama but he now needs to ask himself how he want to be seen in 50 years time. Hopefully he won't settle for being the president that gave up Medicare and SS because the Reps demanded it.
He tried bipartisanship for 2 years - and that ship has sailed. He needs to grow a pair and start doing what he was voted into office to do - which includes standing up for the average person, without whom he'd be nowhere.
01:25 AM on 06/29/2011
You're buying into his propaganda that "the Republicans made me do it". Obama's agenda is almost exactly identical to the Republicans, which is to transfer public monies to the corporations and the very rich on the backs of the average American, which in turn is funneled back to him in the form of campaign contributions and millions in "speaking fees", etc upon retirement (see Bill Clinton $30 million since leaving office).

He merely uses the Republicans as a cover to enact his corporatist agenda, cutting sleazy backroom deals behind closed doors and on the golf course that never fail to stick it to the little guy, while mouthing vague and completely phony platitudes to dupe the 'base' into thinking he's really on their side.

The sad thing is that that doesn't even sound like the crazy conspiracy theory it ought to be. I've been waiting for Obama to show some teeth and it just isn't happening and the scenario you outline is becoming more and more believable.

If it continues to insist on having a military budget that's as large as all other nations combined, then the answer is "no."

And the GOP's headline should read, make permanent the Bush-era tax cuts, continue the tax loopholes for millionaires and billionaires, cut all "entitlement programs" to balance the budget---let granny cough up more out of pocket to pay for her Medicare. Drill baby drill with no oversight aka regulations, shrink the size of Fed Gov. except the Military and promote State's Rights. The middle class and the poor?, "let 'em eat cake."

Exactly. But the government still saw fit to "borrow" from SS & Medicare.
