Leeds Art Gallery Allows Paintings To Be Taken Home

'The Great Art Take Away': Museum Lets Patrons Rent Art

What does art in Leeds have in common with fast food? It can be taken home. The Leeds Art Gallery runs "The Great Art Take Away," a lending plan that was started in 1961 and features over 600 works from its the gallery's collection.

Like most museums, the gallery doesn't have enough space to show its entire collection at once, so the loan program places art back into the hands of the public. The gallery hosts selection days four times a year and puts the works available for choice on view. The pieces are on loan for a minimum of three months at £4 ($6.50) per month and a second work is just £2 ($3.25) per month.

The director of the gallery told the BBC, "The artworks in our care are acquired for the people of Leeds. It is our responsibility to make them accessible to all and to preserve them for future generations." All that's required to get a piece is a proper ID and a small fee.
