Michele Bachmann: A Smart, Focused, More Dangerous Palin, Say Minnesota Democrats

Michele Bachmann

PLYMOUTH, Minn. -- Parker's Lake is a pleasant suburban spot near Minneapolis, a nice place to fish in summer and skate in winter. At the picnic pavilion, "brats" were on the grill as local Democrats gathered to raise money and their own spirits, listen to a speech by Sen. Al Franken -- who grew up nearby -- and talk about the 2012 presidential race.

The message from Parker's Lake: Take Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) very seriously.

"She's really smart," said Mike Quist, a retired avionics engineer who wore his red-white-and-blue suspenders to the picnic. "She's no Sarah Palin -- she's much more dangerous than Sarah Palin."

It's always useful to ask home-state voters -- especially those from the other party -- about a new presidential candidate, and especially when she is in the midst of an announcement tour elsewhere.

Democrats in this swing-suburb (the congressional district voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and elected a Republican to Congress in 2010) know Bachmann. Some of the local pols worked with her in the legislature; her district is next door.

Their basic view is this: Bachmann is as right-wing as they come -- a pure pro-life, anti-gay-marriage, vehemently anti-tax and anti-regulation true-believer (her family's farm subsidies and foster-care payments notwithstanding). But the locals also regarded her as focused, disciplined, shrewder and more knowledgeable than her often-squirrely cable TV hits make her seem.

"The thing is, she knows how to appeal to the Christian right social types and the Tea Party at the same time," said Patricia McGurk. "She can claim that 'tax expert' labels because of her law background. She's clever."

Professional practitioners at the picnic -- the state legislators and long-time organizers -- noted that she had hired some seasoned advisers, including Ed Rollins and Mike Huckabee's former campaign press secretary, Alice Stewart.

And they denounced -- but in a way admired -- her ability to package herself as her message.

"I think she is dangerous," said State Sen. Terri Bonoff, who represents the area. "She acts like she is selling a brand. Well, politics and government isn't about a slogans and brands, it's about having a real debate on the issues."

No one at the picnic seemed to regard the state's other GOP contender -- former Gov. Tim Pawlenty -- as a major political threat. It was duly noted that his campaign seemed to be going nowhere nationally.

For some reason, the mild, polite and studious people of Minnesota produce a disproportionate number of colorful national politicians: Gene McCarthy, Hubert Humphrey, Paul Wellstone, Jesse Ventura, Franken and Bachmann to name a few.

Boring Minnesota politicians tend not to do that well on the national stage. The earnest-but-dull Walter Mondale lost 49 states to incumbent Ronald Reagan in the 1984 presidential elections. And on the charisma front, Mondale was John F. Kennedy when compared with Pawlenty.

That makes Bachmann the Minnesota Viking to watch as she launches her campaign in Iowa running neck-and-neck there with frontrunner Mitt Romney.

There were those at the picnic who thought a contest between Bachmann and Romney in Iowa would be no contest at all.

"He has all the personality of mortician," said Juanita G. (she declined to give her last name). "All of that fake emotion is creepy. I can't stand Bachmann. I think she's crazy. But she's real."

A Sarah Palin who didn't quit and serves on real Congressional committees! She is formidable indeed, so long as she doesn't give interviews to real journalists. She's likely to take Sarah Palin's advise to Christine O'Donnell, to only speak to Fox News. The question is, how much money can she raise post-Citizens United? Enough to forgo the evening news, the papers and the news magazines, and just stick to ads to spin her position? Why won't commercials countering breaking news stories run during the breaks in news programs, for the lucky candidate with lots of CU funding? If it happens, it will be Bachmann...

Now I understand why she is still in office. Dems in her district are just a little too laid back.

All of you Bachmann detractors will end up eating your words. At a later date, when she brings to light her list of the foundling, yes, foundling fathers. These are the hitherto unknown young people, delivered as babes in the dead of night onto the doorsteps of the Washington, Jefferson & Adams Families by the ungodly, fornicating liberals of the day. These are the people who penned the great documents, wrote the speeches & prompted their adoptive fathers every step of the way.

And yes, one of these was John Quincy Adams, a no-name cast off at birth, yet the pre-adolescent genius, the voice behind the curtain, in our nation's formative years. Those who take no notice of history are damned to repeat it.

Gee Buck Carson, you're comment shows that you've bought into her Distorted reality.

Your writing is as if you copied her words directly. SHE is the One taking things away from the Middle Class as she represents the Koch Bros. and all of the upper 2 per cent who don't pay their taxes.

Like her and her husband, taking in over $250,000 dollars for their farm in subsidies.

"Debate"? Michelle the "Flake" was challenged to a Debate from a 13 year old Girl and her
Tea Bag Christo fascists, threatend her safety.

So, in that respect she is Dangerous.

When she gets into a Real debate, Outside of Iowa, she may find Reality a "Dose" of Casteroil.

How do they call themselves Christian, though, is such a mystery... but the crusades did go on for a while. It makes it ridiculous.

*Please note: the Christian reference is related to the parties threatening the 13 yr old Bachmann "opponent." And I do find it commendable that the Bachmann's have taken in 23 foster children and raised them as their own.

"She's really smart..." Really? She has a funny way of showing, what with incorrect facts and all.

The only difference between Bachmann and Palin is that Bachmann spews lies, disinformation, and Christianist religious dogma and intolerance in complete grammatical sentences. Turning around one of Andy Borowitz's jokes in his Report today: "Palin appeals to people who find Bachmann too cerebral."

Michele Bachmann and the conservatives believe in women and minorities. We demonstrate that daily.

This woman has my support. She is dangerous to all those that thrive off the sweat of the middle class. The people that are losing everything they've spent their lives building. The people that understand the efficiency and compassion that arises from a simpler government not fraught by the arrogance associated with the progressive fallacy:

"Only Government Knows Best For You and Me!"

Instead she deeply understands the conservative mantra:

"Question Authority" and "Trust people to make their own decisions"

That's what this is about. The sickness inherent in not trusting is so very obvious to us, I do feel sorry for you people that have built your lives on fallacious thinking.

It will be the hangover of all hangovers for you. Best to burst the bubble of rationalization that you call home asap.

But dangerous to all those that thrive off the sweat of the middle class?

She defends interests that are disinterestedly diminishing the middle class of America. That is her hangup to deal with.

Everyone should be free to make their own decisions, but one of the primary roles of government is to ensure that the right to making educated decisions is prioritized.

You are about to have your bubble burst - that's apparent. The idea of "ensure that the right to making educated decisions is prioritized" is simply fantastic let alone naive.

Don't kid yourself. You are a real amateur.

"Trust people to make their own decisions"

Except when it comes to a woman's right a choose.

"Michele Bachmann and the conservatives believe in women and minorities."

Unless you're gay. Also: see above.

Michelle Bachmann is a sociopath, she's smart ( well kinda), attractive to look at, has lots of outward redeaming qualities, inside she's a boiling qualdron of lunacy. I have to give her credit for one thing though, and that is that she's not Palin.
