Green Airlines Ranked By Carbon Efficiency In Brighter Planet Report (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/28/11 11:01 AM ET   Updated: 08/28/11 06:12 AM ET

As eco-conscious travelers embrace energy-efficient cars and alternative forms of transportation, an often overlooked contributor to greenhouses gases is air travel.

The Associated Press reports that globally, the aviation industry accounts for a "rapidly rising" three percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Although some airlines are working to curtail their numbers, Reuters reports that the U.S. recently demanded that their airlines be exempt from greenhouse gas penalties per a European Union law extending carbon permits to aviation.

A new analysis by Brighter Planet rates the carbon efficiency of popular airlines, taking into consideration traditional "inaccuracies" in carbon accounting. In order to measure flight efficiency, Brighter Planet analyzed five variables: aircraft fuel economy, passenger load, seat density, freight share and flight distances.

According to the carbon-calculating company, they analyzed over nine billion passenger departures and more than 12 trillion passenger-miles flown over the course of 10 years. With an advanced energy and carbon model, they were able to rank the airlines.

Patti Prairie, CEO of Brighter Planet, says that there was a tenfold variation in energy efficiency per passenger miles across the industry. “The importance of our calculations is to show that businesses and individuals don’t necessarily have to cut out air travel or spend more time and money to be more environmentally sensitive, they just need better carbon intelligence.”

Brighter Planet provided the following example:

A passenger flying from New York to Los Angeles on Qantas could leave a carbon footprint almost three times greater than the carbon use of a passenger flying the same route on JetBlue. That is because the Qantas flight uses a much larger aircraft, which burns almost four times as much fuel. In addition, the flight is nearly half-empty, carrying only 44 more passengers than the JetBlue flight.

The slideshow below is based on Brighter Planet's list of the 20 largest airlines (by passenger volume) in the overall industry. According to their findings, the cleanest airline uses almost one-third the fuel to transport its average passenger one mile compared to the least efficient airline. The list is ranked from #1 (most efficient) to #20 (least efficient).

How could you call Ryanair carbon efficient when they fly to airports three hours outside town? Transport to the inner city would more than make up for whatever carbon emissions you would save by flying to a smaller airport further away from town.

Hey there

That's what is bad about going green... most people get confused about what to do. You're telling people that flying with Jetblue is better... and in the "Eco-friendly flying tips" you tell people that flying with a larger airplane is beter. Here's the deal: a fully booked A380 flight is much better than a medium-packed A319 flight, but a fully-booked A319 is better than a ghost 747! Thus it's not about generalizing, but about encouraging people to think about the impact their actions have.
Side note: some people just have to fly, so here are a few of my favorite flying tips:
1. Fly during the day (in order to give the contrails a chance to reflect heat, even try to fly during summer instead of winter - longer daytime hours)
2. Fly non-stop (because taking-off and landing require the most fuel)
3. Consider each business trip whether it is really necessary (or whether a telco will do). It'll save you time (most important), money and motivation
4. Buy your duty-free upon arrival (why increase the weight of the airplane and increase it's kerosene consumption)
5. Purchase electronic-tickets for airline travel whenever possible (no need to print out the ticket)
6. Go to the restroom before entering the airplane (well, the weight of yourself will be reduced...)

I hope this helps! All the best, Jürg Kronenberg

Nice tips. Thanks.

BTW, this article is all about making US Airlines look good.

I find it difficult to connect the words GREEN and Carbon Efficiency with Airplanes! hmm! Not convinced!

Then...

Call FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION 1-866-835-5322 (as suggested by EPA). Also CALL OTAQ 202-564-1682 and WHITE HOUSE Call 202-456-1111 and tell them you are AGAINST CHEMTRAILS and that YOU DO NOT CONSENT and no negotiations. Everyone do this!

It's kind of amazing that older, larger jets are still flying half full flights across the country. It's also sad that some of our mega corporations that reap these multi billion dollar profits, benefit by avoiding taxes and gain from outsourcing American industries, can't be made to help the airline industries modernize their fleets with some sort of stock option incentive. Actually, we should be stripping those mega corporations tax avoidance perks. If they do get a tax break, it should be with the stipulation that a portion of those profits should go to help modernize a vital industry crucial to the success of the United States, and there are many to choose from.

That way, crumbling infrastructure could be addressed, inefficient airlines could be modernized or streamlined to cut waste and costs, and on and on. It would be a win/win proposition. Right now, the mega corporations use their profits to aggrandize themselves by playing insider trading, stock buy back games and paying their CEO's outrageous bonuses.

I'm an airline pilot and hardly ever see half full flights anymore. Our airplanes are packed.

Interesting that the photo shows the chem trails. Of course they are not from commercial
airlines, which leave con trails. Where I live, I notice the chem trails criss - crossing the skies all the time spewing their poison into the atmosphere.

They're everywhere. PTB would love for us to believe this is a normal event caused by condensation. Huffpo must be part of the disinfo if they are using a picture of chemtrails and claiming it's from 'non-green' commercial airliners.

Chem-trails crossing the skies as if this is a normal phenomenon that has always been a part of our skies since World War 2. And so widely excepted too.

Just a sec. I am tuning my tinfoil hat.. yep. got it.
03:17 PM on 06/28/2011
I don't think you "got it". With 98% certainty, the exhaust (water vapor) from an airplane will never create a cloud. This is information from the "Appleman Chart" from the 1950's to study what atmospheric conditions create contrails. So, either our atmosphere has changed, the exhaust from the plane has changed, or both(?). Tinfoil hats are so silly but knowledge and believing your own eyes is a powerful tool.
