Herman Cain Says He's Not Offended By Jon Stewart, Except When He Is

Herman Cain

Herman Cain seems to be of several minds on the matter of Jon Stewart telling jokes about him on "The Daily Show," a show which habitually makes fun of people in politics and the media.

He tells Fox's Juan Williams, "I'm not playing the race card," for instance, but then he says, "Jon Stewart does not like me, in my opinion, because I am an American black conservative. Because I'm black and conservative, I think he probably has a bigger problem with that than he does the whole race thing." Hey, maybe! But I've been watching this Jon Stewart for a long while now, and have noted the fact that he directs comedy at many white conservatives, and also a certain prominent black liberal named Barack Obama.

But Cain can take a joke, he says, except for the ways in which he can't:

"First of all, Jon Stewart is a comedian, I understand that ... but when he mocked me in the dialog of the old Amos 'n Andy. ... I think that was a bit much but you know, he's a comedian. I'm running for office, I'm a problem solver."

I'm pretty sure that bringing up "Amos and Andy" wouldn't have occurred to Cain if Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace hadn't cited it in the first place. And also, have any of the people in this conversation even heard the "Amos and Andy" show? I'm guessing probably not.

WATCH:

Wondering why Cain is so semi-bent out of shape over an episode of "The Daily Show" that aired many weeks ago? Well, it's probably strategic. To really have authentic Tea Party-cred, it helps to have some sort of victim-story to tell about a grievance you have with some figure in the media. Most political reporters seem to be besotted with Cain and his meteoric rise -- it helps them with their overall "people don't like the established GOP candidates" narrative. Jon Stewart made sport of Cain, however, on the teevee, so that's what he's going with for the time being.

Let's recall, of course, that the reason Cain drew Stewart's attention was because he told people that as president, he'd only sign bills that were three pages or less. He's since walked that back -- after it was pointed out everywhere that he wouldn't be able to sign a single appropriations bill, let alone his beloved "Fair Tax" legislation -- and he's done so in a way that makes it sound like the media is stupid for believing him when he said he'd do the three-page thing in the first place, because he was obviously kidding.

Cain should, at some point, tell the audience attending his lecture at the Family Leader Presidential Lecture Series in Pella, Iowa, that they were wrong to conclude he was sincere when he said that. I'm sure he'll get to it! After all, a lawmaker not reading bills is sort of like the manager of a pizza delivery chain not delivering pizzas. (I bet Herman Cain would make fun of a pizza store manager like that!)

At any rate, Herman Cain is in no way offended by Jon Stewart, he just wants to make sure his supporters are offended on his behalf.

Being a black Republican is sort of like being a gay Republican or even a woman who is a Republican. One is identifying with the party that has historically tried to suppress them and still tries to suppress their vote.  For example, the conservative supreme court just ruled that women employees of WalMart could not sue them for pay discrimination for the flimsy reason that Walmart was too big.   Read More...

Herman Cain is doing some sort of routine. That is not how normal people speak. He has chosen his own cadence and pitch that is out of the ordinary, but might comically sound a little like Amos and Andy.

So anyone imitating Herman Cain is crossing some sort of line, because they sound like they are trying an Amos and Andy routine? Even though this is exactly what Herman Cain is choosing to sound like.

What is it about these extreme republican candidates with thin skin? They can dish it out but can't take it. SP has the same veneer as Cain. They can't accept criticism and view it as an attack instead. Somebody needs to grow up and get a pair.

Extra cheesy!

Almost everyone in Europe today had slave ancestors during the Roman empire and early medieval period. My ancestors most certainly number among the slaves of the empire, and you know what? I bet they never got enough bacon, probably died miserably and too young, had zero self-esteem and no doubt eeked out a fairly wretched existence. But I somehow got through all the travail, as did Cain.

So I don't give a rat's as - that's all over, and I could care less about thinking about it. Cain should learn to care less too, and stop dancing around his invisible carping pole. Enough, dude; we can all get Latte's now, so find another tangent to go off on...

There's endless discrimination against black people happening in this country every day. It has been happening for years and everyone who matters has been shrugging their shoulders and washing their hands.

But one republican has a hollow, non legitimate, petty grievance and he gets covered for days.

God, what a stupid country.

34 seconds into it. "You and I didn't have time to read it, we're too busy trying to LIVE."--Cain

Listen to the gravel-voiced Cain say "live" in that clip and tell me Stewart wasn't imitating Cain. That wasn't Amos n' Andy--that's a GOP smear campaign.

Cain is irrelevant, and he can't win, but the record needs to be set straight anyway.

Amos and Andy.  Freeman Gosden, Charles Correll.

Of course I've heard Amos and Andy.  I am not that old that radios were not invented yet.

This guy seems to be a fake - he's bringing up something that happened weeks ago. He's not getting enough attention - so he's taking a page from the Palin Book of "watch me - I"m not getting enough attention so I'll do something to call attention to me". He certainly is a whiner!!

Photographs of Hermain Cain wearing dark glasses reminds me of one thing: It makes him look like the sterotypical image of an African dictator.

Herman Cain touts himself as something other than a politician. Fine. So I guess we can't expect him to do or say things that are politically astute. Okay. So, imagine him negotiating complicated political disputes among nations and among competing constituencies in our own country. Go ahead. Think about it.
12:32 PM on 06/30/2011
What is or is not a "political dispute"? I guess a political dispute is something not based on facts but is more about opinion or desires, and facts just mukes up the arguments. Yes, Herman might just have a low tolerance for those "negotiations" because he is a "problem solver" and not a politician. He just might be too hard to handle by a government run by politicians instead of problem solvers, except for one major fact, the problems we have in this country were created by politicians who do not have the smarts to solve them.

Herman Cain calls Jon Stewart racist. This from a guy who used one of the more offensive Italian stereotypes to sell his pizza.

Beautifully said. As a first generation Italian American this guy offends the crap out of me.
Have a gwonderful holiday weekend.

"Godfather's Pizza--a pizza you can't refuse." "Shot through with mozzarella. Careful, its loaded." (Several pics of mobsters on the web page.)

Nothing racial in that imagery, right? ;)

"God awful pizza. A pizza you can't keep down." "Careful, I warned you."
