None of you can say anything that this servant of God has not heard before. Christ told us to expect it and it doesn't bother us. It just means that you are here because you are searching.....and hearing the voice of God calling to you and you are running as fast as you can. However, you cannot outrun God. You will make a decision at sometime in this short life to accept Him or reject Him. He waits, because His love is greater than you can imagine.

You don't have to believe in god or jesus to help your fellow man.
11:28 PM on 06/29/2011
No, you don't, but there's nothing wrong with finding inspiration to do from such a belief.
11:41 PM on 06/29/2011
Ahem...Let's try this again.

No, you don't, but there's nothing wrong with finding inspiration to do SO from such a belief.

The difference is that when one truly follows Christ helping your fellow man and service is the point of life.

The wisdom is about the Christian value of sharing and caring. Unlikely to be perceived by a greedy person.

LOL. The Christian goes straight for the 'ad hominem'. Not enough Matthew or Luke methinks.

When you decide to open your heart and see other beings as your equals, rather than getting a "better than everyone" attitude and thinking you have it all figured out. No one does.

Shane's beliefs are acted out in his community. Simple Way doesn't tell people who they should live. They work to help take care of people's needs. That is their calling card. In my experience that has more of an impact on society than the Fundie McScream A Lots that way too many people encounter.

is a Bible verse † † †
11:50 PM on 06/28/2011
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Until a person humbles their heart and becomes born again in Christ they cannot have the "Spirit of truth" ( Holy Spirit) because it is only through the Spirit that we can have understanding and a relationship with Jesus Christ. Any assumptions about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit outside those bounds is guesswork. Christians like Shane, myself and others can only tell you from a perspective that you can't see or know which is why Jesus said to His disciples; And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (man, woman, and child) Mark 16:15, because gospel of Christ "is the power of God unto salvation".

Once again there was no wisdom in a "Two Minutes of Wisdom" clip. In this case it was some guy carrying on about how his entire life is dedicated to the myths and superstitions of a bunch of Bronze Age goat herders.

That's foolishness, not wisdom.

Bourgeois atheism is just as bad as religious fanaticism and holders of this view can't work with others for a common good because their contempt of the latter.

Did you have a comment that coincides with reality, or are you just here to spout religious propaganda?
11:34 PM on 06/29/2011
You must have suspected that whatever you found in the clip was not going to satisfy you. So as a card-carrying "member of the reality-based community," why are you searching so hard for wisdom in places you are sure it's not to be found?

It would seem that the realistic approach would mandate leaving such "myths and superstitions" to the idiots who believe in them, right?

Unless...you're not so sure after all, which is why you came to the HP Religion section--against your better judgment--and deliberately clicked on a video featuring a Christian activist.
12:12 AM on 07/18/2011
Exactly. I know a man who sends me a satire of religion almost
every week. Why is he so interested? Maybe he would like to
find Jesus in a way which can accept, or perhaps has already
accepted without knowing it.

Shane, ever tried to find real evidence into something you obviously put a lot of time into understanding? If I was going down the road you took, I would start with the validity of that person before investing my time into such a venture.

Now if you just like the stories without challenging the reality of jesus, that's fair enough but in my opinion that's on the same level as investing my time in The Lone Ranger. I like what he stands for but I know he is just a mythical character in Cowboy folklore.
07:40 PM on 06/28/2011
Why do you assume he hasn't looked into what he believes? I mean you have no idea what he has or hasn't considered. Do you realize how presumptuous and condescending you are being?

Imagine you were expressing your views and I said: "ExiledMan, ever tried looking into the things you talk about? If I were going to mock God I would start by making sure He isn't actually real. Now if you just don't want there to be a God because that lets you live however you like that's fair enough, but in my opinion that makes as much sense as jumping off a building and telling yourself there is no gravity."

Do you see how presumptuous that is? How it just assumes you haven't actually thought about things? How it just assumes I understand you? Do you see how condescending it is? How it gives you no credit at all?

Well that is what you sound like, and instead of making Shane look dump it makes you look insecure and like you have no clue what you are talking about.

I just asked the question, why is he investing so much time into a mythical character? And like The Lone Ranger, if he's happy with that, go for it.

The burden of proof is on the person assuming that there is a god, so far, no-one has done that.
Now if I was to say that there really is a tooth fairy, I would assume you would want logical proof rather than just me saying something crass like..."It just is"

So my point was, if you are going to invest your time to that degree, wouldn't you start at the beginning and see if there is any validity in this entity that you are devoting your life?

All we have is four anonymous gospels and even they don't concur on his history.

I really don't care if he follows Mickey Mouse, his prerogative, just seems a waste of time and energy in accepting something as true without looking deeper into it than just accepting hearsay.

Beyond my previous comment, I merely ask when Two Minutes of Wisdom is going to greatly up the quality with Two Minutes of Wisdom with Richard Dawkins. Or some other atheist, maybe Sam Harris.

those darn selfish genes are not interested in wisdom but in making sure those like it multiply.

religion and materialism not exactly the highlight of wisdom.

the christian preachers are way smarter than the materialists in promoting their religion. the preacher only has to say believe that god came down in the flesh died and for your sins because your perfect creator demanded an atonement to get your free pass to heaven; now go home and let god decide how much you should give in the collection plate each week. $$$$$$$$$$$

the materialist can only say you are nothing and will return to nothing and you have no meaning and purpose to your lives and your children are nothing and the only reason they exist is due to your selfish gene that started with a grand accident.

not exactly endures one to put money in a collection plate to go around promoting their religion to the world.

Well, I'll say something other than bashing Shane Claiborne.

This is an improvement for me in this Two Minutes of Wisdom series. The last two people were wide-eyed religious, speaking with such blind devotion that they creeped me out. For all the effort HP put into finding religious moderates, they found these wide-eyed religious fanatics. At least Shane isn't wide-eyed or creepy and at least he talks like a normal human being.

Shane honestly sounds like a lot of Christians. He talks about Jesus's love and community. For many Christian liberals, that's what Christianity is. Community on Sunday, doing charity for others, not doctrine about what is or isn't sin. The supernatural is almost a metaphor for human decency. The concerns about suffering that Shane expressed are very much in line with what many nonbelievers are concerned about. I could criticize Shane easily, but some of that is missing the point. The fact of the matter is this is a decent guy who thinks nothing any differently from my Christian family and friends.

My response to this approach is simply to point out that community and concern for the less fortunate is not exclusive to religion and is just as valued by many nonbelievers. I and many others are good without god and without religion. I don't think you need what Daniel Dennett calls "faith in faith", you don't need Jesus and a church to be a good person.

Two Minutes Of Wisdom With Shane Claiborne...........

Why do all these so called fake mystic types always seem to want to do strange things with their hair and body..... is that suppose to make them look more exotic and believable???

They're vain and very attached to their personal appearance. I'd imagine Shane's look takes a fair amount of maintenance. This is why Buddhist monks and nuns shave their heads.

No, it is because we're too cheap to buy shampoo....I mean we are not ATTACHED to the buying of shampoo. :D

I'm a lay-person and do it. Helps to keep the ego in check just a little bit. I get waaaaay to caught up in "form" and appearance, worrying about how I look to others, whether or not I'm attractive. That's not something that I want to focus on, so no hair, no make-up. It's not mystical or exotic or done to make me look "more Buddhist" and believable, it's because I want to focus on other things.

*blinks*

That has to be the longest two minutes of inane claptrap I have heard in a long time. I'm sure Mr. Clairborne is a kind, decent human being, but this is not "wisdom" in any sense of the word. I have met many eloquent theologians in my time who were able to detail their positions clearly, but sadly Mr. Clairborne's position really escapes me.

That having been said, as long as Clairborne doesn't go around with the desire to oppress others for their having different beliefs, deprive women and homosexuals of their rights, and spread the teachings of pseudoscience in schools, he is A-OK with me.
