Casey Anthony's Father Admits Suicide Attempt, Denies Molestation

Casey Anthony Trial

First Posted: 06/29/11 01:44 PM ET Updated: 08/29/11 06:12 AM ET

Casey Anthony's first-degree murder trial descended into chaos on Wednesday morning when prosecutors entered a flurry of objections as the defense attempted to question the accused child killer's parents about sexual abuse they allege she suffered at the hands of family members.

"I would never do anything like that to my daughter," the defendant's father, George Anthony, said when asked if he had molested Casey.

Defense attorney Jose Baez then asked George Anthony if he would ever admit to abusing his daughter. "You would never admit to it, would you sir," Baez asked. Anthony again denied any wrong doing. "I would never do anything to harm my daughter in that way," he said.

The alleged abuses were brought up by the defense during opening arguments, after Baez claimed Caylee died on June 16, 2008, when she drowned in her family's swimming pool. He said Anthony did not contact the authorities because she was unable to tell the truth after years of sordid sexual abuse that she suffered at the hands of her father.

"It all began when Casey was eight years old and her father came into her room and began to touch her inappropriately and it escalated... She could be 14 years old, have [had] her father's penis in her mouth, and go to school and play with the other kids as if nothing [had] happened," Baez said.

Stonewalled with denials from George Anthony on the alleged molestation, Baez turned his line of questioning to a highly publicized suicide attempt that occurred on January 22, 2009. On that day, former Anthony family lawyer Brad Conway contacted law enforcement and reported George Anthony missing. In his 911 call, Conway said Anthony "has taken several bottles of medication from the house as well as some pictures."

The following day, police found a despondent Anthony, along with a five page suicide note, at a Daytona Beach, Fla., hotel. Anthony was taken into police custody and briefly held at a medical center for evaluation.

On the stand today, Anthony admitted attempting to take his own life and then broke down on the stand. Casey Anthony did not react as her father put his head in his hands and sobbed.

Earlier in the morning, George Anthony became agitated with Baez when he was again questioned about an odor he said he had smelled in the trunk of his daughter's Pontiac Sunfire when he went to retrieve it from Johnson's Wrecker on July 15, 2008. The vehicle had been impounded by the Orlando towing company on June 30, 2008, roughly two weeks after Caylee was last seen alive.

"You're trying to take this joy of my life away from me, sir, and you can't do it anymore," Anthony said. "I will answer this to you, sir - the decomposition that I smelled in the trunk of my daughters car on July 15, 2008 at Johnson's towing smelled like human decomposition."

During previous testimony Anthony, a former police detective, said he was initially afraid of what he might find in the trunk of the vehicle and thought, "Please God, don't let this be my Casey or my Caylee [in the trunk]," he testified.

Prior to calling George Anthony to the stand, the defense briefly questioned his wife, Cindy Anthony. The defense was again attempting to take aim at her son, Lee Anthony. During opening arguments, Baez alleged Casey Anthony's older brother had tried to "follow in his father's footsteps."

"On certain occasions when he was a teenager, [Lee] attempted to also touch his sister, although it didn't go as far," Baez said. He added, "These ugly secrets will come out at this trial. And you'll see what makes Casey Anthony act the way she does."

Baez asked Anthony today if she recalled "several years back when there was an incident involving your son Lee going into Casey's room at night?"

Prosecutors immediately objected, but Judge Belvin Perry overruled the objection and instructed Anthony to answer. She replied, "No."

Several other objections followed as Baez attempted to further his line of questioning about the alleged abuses. Each objection was sustained by Perry and Anthony was eventually allowed to step down following a brief sidebar between the judge and the attorneys.

Casey Anthony, 25, is accused of multiple charges, including capital murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child and misleading law enforcement in the death of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee. The prosecution is seeking the death penalty.

Amidst all of the hoopla surrounding the trial, some of Casey Anthony's personal photographs were released. Several of Anthony's photographs were used as evidence.

Prosecutors alleged that Casey Anthony killed her daughter, then misled authorities who were searching for the toddler. But her attorneys insisted that Caylee drowned in the family's swimming pool. The defendant's lawyers claimed that after years of abuse, Casey Anthony felt unable to reveal the truth.

Prosecutors attempted to cast Casey Anthony as a party girl -- revealing that she took part in a "Hot Body" contest just four days after she claimed her daughter drowned in her family's pool.

Lawyers showed jurors photos of Casey Anthony partying, like this image, which was posted on the defendant's Photobucket.com account.

Casey Anthony reportedly told investigators that her daughter had been kidnapped by a nanny, but during the trial her attorneys claimed the child drowned.

One question that remains unanswered is the identity of Caylee Anthony's father. Casey Anthony reportedly told friends that the child's father was a "one night thing."

But her lawyers have floated a theory involving incest. Casey Anthony's attorneys pressed an FBI witness to tell jurors that the agency conducted a paternity test on the defendant's brother, Lee Anthony. The test came back negative.

Investigators also conducted a paternity test on Casey Anthony's father, George Anthony, which also came back negative.

  • Casey Anthony Personal Photos

Tests also revealed that Jesse Grund, a man Casey Anthony once dated, was not Caylee Anthony's father.

  • Casey Anthony Personal Photos

Casey Anthony's family said they knew something was amiss when they detected a foul odor coming from the back of the defendant's car in July, 2008.

  • Casey Anthony Personal Photos

The trunk of the car actually contained a bag of trash, but prosecutors claimed that Caylee Anthony's body decomposed in the rear of the vehicle before it was moved to another location.

  • Casey Anthony Personal Photos

An insect expert for the defense stated that the body didn't decompose in the car because there wasn't any evidence of bugs that are often attracted to remains.

Caylee Anthony's remains were discovered near the family's home in December, 2008.

Prosecutors alleged that Casey Anthony killed her daughter by placing duct tape over her mouth. Duct tape was discovered wrapped around the todder's skull when the child's remains were recovered.

No matter what lies people will think of next to undo Justice, Casey is found Not Guilty so that is really all that matters. Threats to her and her family, to jurors and bloggers that don't want to think as they do, show she and others are in danger and those who threaten ought to be in jail themselves. The jury has spoken and there was no evidence to convict Casey. Live with it!

The important question is: is there a REMORSE? A mother who truly loved her child WOULD NOT care if she was getting a death sentence or not. IF there is a remorse, the VERDICT IS HER PUNISHMENT, if there isn't she should not live. ABUSED OR NOT this girl wanted to get rid of the obstacle that prevented her from being free. It would make much more sense if she had a bipolar disorder.

I feel like she was judged by a 'special needs jury.' I hope she has a miserable life.......In the Scott Peterson case the jurors didn't need to be told how his wife died BUT they knew HE did it.....

Casey is a load Cindy Anthony should have swallowed......

The same for every other case on any detective tv show you watch! This for some reason seems to be different and everyone wonders why people are mad. There comes a point when common sense causes you to see something that is wrong and stand up for what you believe is right. This injustice you see if seen by the people that are afraid to be righteous will be in disbelieve but there can only be one right. The one that is not afraid and righteous will see and do to protect everyone else. Whether right nor wrong it shall prove itself in the end to the one that matters. And She (Casey Anthony) is not only wrong but has caused needless ripples in the very fabric of time to make a hell unlike any other for her and her actions. It is written in time's fabric that Kacey Anthoney's life will not only be measured by the life she lead but by the people she has choosen to lead (her daughter) and this will be decided on by only one. His action is swift and denominates punishment. He acts but souly on justice and relies on truth. Her soul will be his. And she will be forever in his parole. Her deed can never be unwritten therefor she has commited the ultimate sin in killing her first born and will be senteced to an eternity in hell as her punishment unfolds. She does not know what awaits her...

Casey Anthony obviously comes from a very dysfunctional "home" and it is not difficult to believe her allegations both with regard to her father and her brother. What is hard for me to believe is the "mob justice" demanded by the public, hell-bent on revenge. Anthony had a fair trial. A sequestered (uninfluenced by the lamestream media) jury of her peers found her not guilty. But that doesn't matter to the mob. Anthony will be lucky if she is allowed to live by the public that is full of blood lust and without the slightest respect for the law and its process.

Wow.

I don't condone violence, but if someone took matters into their own hands let's just say I wouldn't feel the least bit sorry for her.

You're just as blind as the jury. Are you a "33 year old, college educated male" like Juror #6 was? Said juror is also trying to profit from the case as we speak. His asking price for an interview? $50k. I also wouldn't be surprised if he got off on the Prosecution's evidence (i.e., the "Hot Body Contest" photos of Casey taken during the month her child was allegedly missing) He's disgusting. Casey Anthony is a disgusting human being and in the words of Samuel L. Jackson "YES, THEY DESERVE TO DIE AND I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL."
01:48 PM on 07/09/2011
The incest story is completely believable, and explains Casey's "split" behavior. Incest is more common than people want to believe. I had a foster daughter who the judge sent back to a demanding biological father abuser, and later took his wife in murder-suicide. Childhood Sexual Abuse required Casey to lie to the world, and now with her 3 years in jail might be the first time she was ever able to speak the truth, and yes, the jury did not convict her. Something is really wrong with this picture, and Daddy George who bound the duct tape on that baby girl and wrapped her in a blanket just like he did all the family pets who died, is at the root of this mystery I think. We will all learn more over time. Most abusers deny their guilt in incest, that's very common. Let's put a focus on that issue, why can't Casey Anthony's example serve to make all kids report abuse in all families.
10:02 AM on 07/13/2011
thank you. this is my thoughts-i have yet to review all the happenings but when i heard about this-that was my first thought-as a victim of rape/molestation-I totally understand all that happened. we cant report it because where would we go to live? no one wants to go away to a new home when you are a kid and thats all you know. there has to be a way to get through to these kids to let them know they dont have to stay in the home where the molestor is pestering them...

Makes you wonder how defense lawyers sleep at night, but they are laughing all the way to the bank. think of the book deals and TV dramas this will promote. And we still have no idea what happened to this precious little angle. Mom will party and write a book. A movie will be made about her life with more lies that no one can believe. So sad.

I have to say ,.,...these blogs i thought a good purpose.. give people a chance to state there feelings.. and possibly heal in the idea of sharing ideas with each other.....YET...all these spaces do is give weak cowards the ability to act tough... and say outlandish things...attack others... and then sit back and laugh like cowards and laugh because they know they could never state their oppinions in public... these courage slots have become old and useless especially when you talk of religion or politics..I guess Americans truly have become pathetic

Poor George, sobbing like that. For who, himself? For not calling 911 as soon as he found caylee. Maybe George & casey didnt hear the little girl when she was out side because they were Busy!
Was Casey waiting for George to tell his wife what they were doing. Is that why casey lied so much to her mom?
I think Casey is still waiting for George to tell the truth.
